    THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU . . . this is a FANTASTIC quick tip. It is so easy to add too much oil to stiff paint, you are the only artist who has ever recommended using 'single drops' from the palette knife! Also, I have looked at so many 'how-to' tips and read books/article trying to find straight forward step(s) for re-working old (dried) paintings. YOU MADE IT SO SIMPLE!!!! Dianne, you are THE BEST EVER! Each of your tips/lessons is so explicit and easy to follow!! Take care in Georgia.

    Thank you very much Dianne you are a wonderful inspiration ... I have struggled with this since I began oil painting and thought you just dipped the brush in the solvent and wax resin as you painted. The paint dragged on my canvas and I couldn't control any detail, never flowed as a creamy texture because I hadn't mixed it in properly ... plus the fumes even with low odour were strong ... your tips are so clear and easy to follow ... now painting will be as you say enjoyable and fun ... what would we do without you xxx

    I inherited many tubes of paint that have the caps dried on the tube and very difficult to remove. I've tried scraping off as much as I can with a knife and also applying paint thinner to the area around the threads of the cap and it works sometimes. I've tried soaking the top of the tube in paint thinner for weeks and running it under hot water with no success. Do you have any other suggestions? Also if the tube develops a tear and the paint starts to come out of the hole, what is the best way to save the paint? Thank you for the excellent videos.

    Just curious. Do you gesso your canvas before you begin a painting? And does a gessoed surface help to make the paint flow better?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  4 роки тому

      Linda, when I purchase acrylic gessoed canvases, I always give it an extra coat of acrylic gesso. This helps seal the fibers of the canvas, preventing less oil from the paint to sink into those fibers. Canvases that are oil primed most often don't need an extra coat.

    In order to make the paint flow and dry faster, I am using WN Liquin Original. Should I spray the canvas with the 50/50 mixture of linseed oil and Gamsol, and continue to use the Liquin as usual? Does the lightly applied 50/50 spray mix on the surface affect how the Liquin works? Thank you for the tip!

  • @carmenf.desousa-aritst3044
    @carmenf.desousa-aritst3044 5 років тому +1

    Thx so much so this means I can also use a 50/50 of galkid and gamsol ?? Right ??

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  5 років тому +2

      Not for the purpose of initially dampening the canvas, Carmen. Galkyd is a rapid drying medium and will eventually clog the spraying mechanism. Also, being fast drying, it won't stay damp on the canvas long enough to serve this particular purpose. It's best in this case to use a slow drying oil rather than a fast drying medium.

  • @kunalkulkarni542
    @kunalkulkarni542 4 роки тому

    Hi Dianne ! Thank you for your wonderful informative videos. I am a fresher to oil painting. And since the lockdown I have nothing to do but paint.
    What I need to ask is after we prime a fresh canvas with Gesso does it need to be wet with this mixture so it gets oil friendly ? Also can we mix linseed oil with distilled turpentine ? Gamsol is very costly in my country. Can you please reply ?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  4 роки тому

      A dry primed canvas surface resists wet paint, so we need to very slightly dampen it to condition the surface to receive the paint easily, but we'd best be careful not to get it so wet that the paint slides around. A 50/50 mixture of a refined solvent--mineral spirits or turpentine--and an artist grade oil--linseed, poppy, or walnut--lightly applied to the surface, then wiped down until it is only slightly damp, will work.

    Hi Dianne, Thankyou for all your absolutely wonderful lessons, they have helped me develop a better understandingof oil painting.
    I have just watched a tutorial where you mentioned the fat over lean principal, but I am now a bit confused after watching this one where you mention touching over an old painting using a mixture of 50 50 gamsol and linseed. Would that affect the fat over lean principal or is it okay to do as the painting has completely dried? Can you please clear this up for me?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  Рік тому

      Franciska, the fat of lean principle addresses the degree of drying of the paint layers. If a top layer dries before one underneath it, there is a risk of the paint cracking. This method of touching up an old painting adds a wet layer on top of those already dry.

    I love your tips Diane. I bought 500ml of Archival Odourless Lean Medium, poured a little into a very small jar to use & kept screwing the lid back on, but within a couple of days what remained had all thickened. I have poured the remainder of the 500ml into smaller jars with no space at the top, but I am concerned that as I continue to use it I may lose it because of thickening. Does this happen to Linseed Oil as well? I am 84 years old, Diane, & just want to enjoy my days painting. Thank you for your tips. I'm very grateful.

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  5 років тому +4

      Beryl, linseed oil does not behave like this. Neither does any stable painting medium that is not intended to speed up drying. Frankly, if you like your paint a bit thinner than it's consistency straight out of the tube, I'd stick to just refined linseed oil. For speeding up drying, I recommend a bit of Liquin.

    • @dagoelius
      @dagoelius 5 років тому

      Hi Beryl, I've used the the Archival Oils Lean medium for some time (excellent medium- creates lovely, durable finish when dry).
      This medium is Alkyd (resin) based to allow for faster drying times when working with your oils. Even though the label suggested storing them in smaller jars with no air gap, the nature of the medium will make it thicken after roughly 1 day, (unlike non alkyd based mediums like the refined linseed as Diane suggested).
      If you like the fast drying aspect of this brand of medium, then I would suggest only pouring from the main bottle, what you will need for each particular painting session that your working at the canvas.

    Hi Diane. Of all the UA-cam channels offering art advice, yours are the best. I wonder if you could talk a bit about the different surfaces and their qualities. How does linen compare to canvas or raw canvas vs pre-finished, canvas board, canvas paper. There’s so much out there it gets difficult to know what each is best for what your need may be.

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  5 років тому +1

      I have put your suggestion on our schedule. One thing I might advise here is to avoid using oil paint directly on raw canvas of cotton or linen because the linseed oil will cause the fibers to rot. One more thing, when in doubt about materials suggested on UA-cam or other places, go to the conservation experts to get the scoop. A lot of people are giving half-cocked advise.

  • @MimiStudio22

    This was most helpful. I have two fairly new tubes of oil paint that exude the oil whenever I remove the cap resulting in paint that is too runny. I thought this might be temporary and would cease once I had used them awhile. (They are both Gamblin tubes so I was surprised) . What can I do to remedy the problem?

    • @IntheStudioArtInstruction
      @IntheStudioArtInstruction  5 років тому +1

      Mimi, the only remedy is to squirt the paint out on paper towel, allow the excess oil to absorb, then transfer the paint to your palette. These were probably old tubes that have been sitting idle for some time since they were made. That does happen, but when you buy a tube of paint, there's no way of know how fresh it is until you open it.

    Very helpful, but I do have one question. After you add some linseed oil to the stiff oil paint, is that now considered a "fatter" oil paint than a tube oil paint that was soft enough out of the tube and did not have extra linseed oil added. Or are they considered to be the same "fatness" since they are the same consistency. LOL, I am just starting oil painting, so I am very paranoid about the fat over lean idea. Thank you so much for your wonderful videos.

      The stiffness in paint most likely is caused by the oil seeping away from the pigment, so adding back just enough oil to get it to the same consistency as fresh paint coming out of the tube will likely be about the same fatness. It gets fatter as more oil beyond that is added.
