ATL: Air France 681 - Engine Failure & Emergency Landing
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 чер 2019
- Sunday, June 23rd 2019:
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is serviced by 2 daily Air France flights - AF682/681, a 777-300. AF688/689, an A380. Air France 681 took off around 5:45pm & shortly thereafter declared an emergency due to an engine failure. A flameout during the takeoff phase is known to be a can of worms, but le professionnalisme de l'équipage de conduit & professionalism of the tower controller made it look like a walk in the park. Kudos to all involved in bringing this to a happy ending & condolences to those with ruined travel plans
My pal from the liberal media - Thom Patterson - wrote an excellent blog post on this event. It is accessible via the link below:

Matt- I was aboard this plane. Thank you for this video. I have been able to share it with my family. Scary moment but glad we are all alive today 🙏🏼
What did captain say?
Would love to hear more of your story if you would be willing to share. Thank goodness you were all safe!
listerreg at first when it happened she just said “as you can tell we had an incident, we will be doing a 180 turn and will let you know more when we figure out what happened” then the flight attendants told us more details about the left engine exploded
@@jasminecarmen24 What did he mean "as you can tell"???
Hey! This is Rachael Bailey, Nigel's wife. He told me all about this last night! I am so glad y'all are okay!!! Everything for a reason right! Have fun on your honeymoon!
Bro the pilots sounded more chill than the atc
Shuhao Lu - that’s an understatement!
Because Boeing was about to take another hit.
It's kind of the pilot mindset. In 1982 a British Airways plane flew into the ash cloud of an erupting volcano and lost power to its engines. The pilots' announcement: "Good evening ladies and gentlemen. This is your Captain speaking. We have a small problem. All four engines have stopped. We are all doing our damnedest to get them going again. I trust you are not in too much distress." code7700.com/accident_british_airways_9.htm
They managed to get the plane down safely.
Shuhao Lu pilots are train for anything
@@harrisn3693 - Boeing didn't build the engine, moron.
The ATC controller sounds more stressed than the pilot!
Probably his first emergency on the job
I know air traffic controllers need to stay calm in all situations, but you can't help having a human side. He was genuinely worried. I mean, imagine having the feeling that there could be a chance that you could be speaking to the pilot one last time following if a disaster had happened.
Kudos to the pilot. Also for anyone who is scared of flying, I got by that fear by accepting that if it happens. It happens. And use this ideology with everything, including when you are driving, or even walking. You just don't know if it would be your last.
Im a pilot. At busy airports ATC also have lot of emergency procedures which in an investigation scenario they will be held accountable for. If there are lapses. Plus he has to divert the other flock of 60 aircrafts in his airspace.
@@zaildarbains not entirely, approach will be directing traffic away, not the tower. Plus it's highly unlikely anyone would divert due to this event, plus it is crew choice where to divert if any did, not ATC. The above comment has it right, we all have a human side and the adrenaline would have kicked in.
As for the AF crew, the 777 is reasonably straightforward to fly single engine if TAC (thrust asymmetry compensation) works, plus the electronic checklists are very useful in reducing workload. Single engine work is so well practiced you tend to go into automatic mode when it happen, or so I would imagine as I haven't experienced one, nor do I hope to, in real life.
Being an ATC is extremely stressful. Especially at Hartsfield-jackson international airport.
I am a little bit late, but I was on that plane! I actually had no idea what was going on, I didn’t see anything that happened. All I knew was suddenly we weren’t gaining altitude, we were going in circles, and the cabin was getting uncontrollably stuffy and hot. But after I saw the video of the actual engine going out and the flames sparking out the engine, couldn’t have asked for the situation to be handled any better. There was no panic on my side of the plane, the crew members kept calm and controlled the entire time (which eased my nerves tons, I thought something small happened, not a whole engine failure ahaha). And of course the pilots were amazing as well! They did great in getting us down safe and sound, I have nothing but gratitude to the pilots and crew members!
Engine feeds cabin air... Must be the reason why.
I don’t believe you
@@nodical802 Well, we don't believe YOU, troglodyte.
I was inside the airplane. There a loud boom sound along a flash of light. Then the plane started to shake. Luckily nothing happened and we landed safely. My appreciations to the crew and the pilot.
Cosmos oh wow! How terrifying!!! Thank God you are all safe!!!💕
Did you fly again on that same plane? Or were you book on another airline
@@drewjamila3868 Well one delta person said that there would be another plane the next day at the same time with the same destination, but no one else said that. So me and my family changed our flight from ATL-JFK-Charles DeGaulle.
@@arnavtripathi1596 What airline did you fly on your new route?

There’s more turbulence with this guys camera then there is on that plane .
😂😂😂
That's what he should call his channel.Turbulent Matt
the excitement of it
Eye..wonder if he'd be so cocky and 'witty' if he was on the plane.......
He nonchalantly says I think it's only an engine....................love to record his tone of voice and how he keeps his composure on a distressed flight.
I would have NO loss of dignity of a night in Atlanta at all. KUDOS to the flight crew for a great landing. And to YOU guys for capturing it!!!!!
I remember tracking the flight with my virtual airline... very scary situation and so thankful to see everyone make it out ok. Well done ATC, the pilots, passengers and crew.
Don't you have nothing else to do instead of tracking a flight? What a poor life...
@@CK7985 Are you stupid? There are a number of reasons a.person would track a flight.
@@CK7985 dont you have anything better to do than be a bitch??
What a catch! Some days you go spotting and you just never know what you’ll catch on film! Excellent coverage of this event Matt!
Can only imagine how much clapping there was inside that big boy after landing lol
connor wilkerson right!? I’m so happy everything turned out well!
This is the only instance where clapping on a plane is acceptable
there was none i was right above the engine i have a video
I wish I had a buddy as passionate with airplanes as you. Thanks for the video, man. And I'm glad they landed safely.
This is worth a sub.😉👍🏻
Super lucky that you were out to catch this unfolding!! Awesome video. Le professionalisme était fantastique :)
these things happen .The pilots are higly trained to face every kind of incident,They did their job perfectly. It was cool that you were there to film this Matt.Cheers
Always love the videos matt! I always like seeing if you put a new one up
I was in the cell phone lot when all of this went down. I'm pretty sure I heard the engine pop and when I looked in that direction it was obvious the plane was not gaining a lot of altitude, then the next thing I know the fire equipment is rolling by and stops next to the plane after it stopped right behind me. Thanks for posting this!
Wow! So glad you were able to catch that one to share with us. Thanks
Right on the center line with #1Engine out. What professionalism pilots!!
If someone could be sent to jail for the way they said France you would get life.
Ehh Frunnz
Mad Trucker How do you think the french say France?

Helluva catch, Matt. Never good when they have to appear, but I love seeing the ATL Fire engines.
I too was watching this flight on FR24 and wondered whether Matt would be there to record the drama; and he WAS! Good work Matt!
great commentary and footage as always Matt... thanks
Kudos to the amazing pilots on Air France.
Fantastic video guys! Incredible that you got this.
Thank God for Ben. He made everything better.
Thank God, everybody made it back down safely! Great video mat!
I love how you guys get excited about this stuff. I especially love your nerdy comedic spin 😂😂👍. I share your excitement. I ❤️ commercial aviation.
What great action well done Matt you filmed it beautify and commentary and arc was great.
Crazy! I was listening to ATC live after Flightradar24 alerted me. Thank God for skilled pilots and everyone was safe
How do you set it up for such alerts? Is it something you get when you pay for the app?
Cal I did purchase the “gold” version which offers the feature. It’s only several bucks a month which I think it’s worth it. 😀😀😀😀
Christie OQuin True, but the pilots regularly train incidents exactly like this in the Simulator, they should be perfectly prepared for anything like this. Anyways we should still be grateful that everyone is safe
Planes can fly on one engine and pilots train for this constantly. It's not that bad lol
I have the gold version as well. how u could listen to ATC buddy?
Great video Matt you always give us good info. Something always going on at ATL. I wish Dulles was that exciting we have lots of different aircraft land there just not much traffic for top 10 largest airport in the world.
No one:
Camera man: AIR FRAUNNCE
You are more cultured if you say "Air Fraunnnnnn-ce"....just like you say, "Moscoh" not "Moscowwww"
Broccoli_32 it’s cute!😹. He’s actually saying it the right way. Which I’m sure you already know!💕
Glad to see people siding with the cameraman. It's part of respecting their language if you say it how they say it.
You must be new to Matt Cochran.
It’s pronounced like that in French
I’m impressed and happy to know that we can still make it With one engine to an emergency landing at least 🙏🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Darn! Never clicked so fast! Glad they landed safely and everyone is ok. Awesome video as always Matt! Also this is 21xd09 under a new name, I rebranded my channel a month ago.
Woww... They went full reverse on the other engine right down..you could see the condensation in the inlet. Glad they got back down safely. Nice work again Matt. Thanks for sharing.
Lots of fuel, heavy load. There was another video where in a similar situation, the pilot decided not to use the thrust reverser on the working engine and the brakes caught fire. 750 degree Celsius. The question is how come in some situation, they decide to dump fuel while others they decide to land?
@@2be1withU Not all aircraft are equipped with fuel dump options.
Just stopping by to click the like button and to thank you for being so selfless and generous in providing your amazing content to @VASAviation. Made sure to watch the video all the way through on your channel so you can be the most benefit.
Me too.
Awesome commentary!! Thanks for sharing!! 👍
Matty Cochran with another great upload. Surprised they didn't have to dump fuel, was probably below the MLW. Congrats on the 150K views, hopefully it boosts your other content too.
Overall, the GE 90 engines are very reliable, but hey, shit happens. Great video! 👍🏻
Great video again Matt
Great catch! Amazing!
Here's a little hint about which engine, even though 681 did report it with their souls and fuel. Immediately after the mayday 681 requested left turns, which would indicate that the left engine is out. With non-symmetrical thrust the more powerful engine, in this case the right engine, will create a yaw moment, in this case to the left. The rudder will be over far right to compensate making right turns difficult.
If by that you mean rudder trim, it is manual on 777. Also autopilot does not have rudder authority at any time on any Boeing aircraft.
I'm most familiar with the 737, so that's a new one on me. However it is still going to be easier to turn in the direction of the failed engine.
It works exactly opposite: you never turn into a dead engine in order to avoid a stall of the unpowered wing.
@@ECFVZ yes, that was also my understanding.
In a single engine situation with marginal thrust or airspeed, you turn into the good engine. Turning into the dead engine dramatically increases the risk of a VMC rollover and resultant crash.
With an aircraft of this type, there usually is plenty of thrust and airspeed to maintain speed well above VMC so turning either way is OK.
Oh wow i tracked this exact emergency on FlightRadar and Flight Aware
MottChott me too!
Lol same I did it on fight radar 24

MottChott same!!

Thanks for this video I was aboard this flight. Loud bang out of engine about ~1000 feet. Great captain, thankful to her you could head the calmness in her voice. After that loud bang nose immediately down and level. While time I was thinking about how this plane would stop with so much fuel on board...
Did they dump fuel?
Great video, flight crew and air traffic controllers!!
Don't forget the cabin crew ! They need to make preperations as well and remain calm !
Poor ATC was more excited than the Frog! Good catch.
We have more people in this comment section saying that was in that flight than what the aircraft can carry. This is magician.
awesome catch mate
Mistake from tower who said 62 thousand pounds of fuel but it was 62 tons.....so 124,000 lbs
François Lataste ghgggg
Awesome video Matt. I was just below you in the cell lot. At the end as he passes the ARRFFs you can see my car. That was crazy
You are the best planespotter anywhere!!
Matt- Great video.well done. respect brother.
That is a nice video Matt Cochran . I like the way you describe what is happening in real time . Greetings from France !
A quick look at the heavy rudder deflection would also provide a tell.
Last year I had the opportunity to intern at The Atlanta Tower for a month. It was an awesome experience watching so much weather, emergency’s and traffic go into and out of that airport. Saw a compressor stall on takeoff, cancer patients, a power line helicopter, and tons of other weird stuff!
Why was it so awesome to see cancer patients? That's not something to be super excited about, or to include in the "awesome things" you saw. What made it so exciting?
I said it was an awesome experience. Every other day there was a cancer patient or someone having having a heart attack on a commercial flight and to see how the controllers handled it was amazing and professional. I didn’t intend to say that seeing that was awesome, but seeing how the controllers handled the situation was awesome.
@@familiarfilms6692 cool, yeah sorry. Maybe they were transferring between hospitals and things like that.
Hey matt it’s Derek.. I was there with you today when that happened w my son.. good to meet you man.. we definitely got to get together again sometime

Nice video. It's interesting to see what the fire trucks do in these situations. It's got to be pretty scary for the passengers.
HI MATT, i come to Atlanta every year, couple years ago i sent you a commentary on one of your videos, i told you that i never been at atlanta airport and i would like to go , you told me that the next time that iam here let you know so you can take me

What an amazing Engine the GE90 is. 330 Passengers/Full of Fuel and only needed one Engine to fly one of the biggest planes!!
The ATC sounds stressed... and the pilot communicating is very calm and he's the one making all the difference.
Great video with tower/pilot exchange.
The pilot is calm and professional under intense pressure
I was on this plane! I was the person right on top of the engine that failed!
Tell us what they said? What was the approach of the staff?
Did you guys know an engine went out?
How was it inside?
@@hectormorales2063 serious??
That may be true however the most dangerous part of a flight is between take off and landing, low altitude and low air speed. So losing an engine facing any of these variables is tricky for any pilot in command.
Great footage
I'm an admin of a facebook page called 7700 aircraft emergency alerts and i tracked this as it was happening. Giving live updates. This video is great
Dang... This must have happened right after I left work and those thunderstorms too..glad everybody is alright.
The number of people who don't get any of the fucking humour as well as the time and effort that Matt puts into his various pages is way to damn high.
Happy that it landed safe. They had the reverse thrust on for so long...
It makes me feel better how smooth that went.
The indignity of another night in Atlanta. I’m dead
Well done to the captain for this save emergency landing! Everything was OK. 🙂
You mean pilots, right? There are two.
Ben's wearing an Old Peachtree Road Race Shirt. That race is such a fun race.
Pilot is calm like no problemo...
Doubt a pilot would be anything other than calm.
Woah, glad everything went well

Thank God, Ben brought food! Made me stop into Publix, cause I'm hungry, now.
1 of the powerful engine ever built for passenger plane.
And like everything American, after an initial lease term is junk.
@@harrisn3693 Ah I see you prefer the Rolls Royce engines 😁
VIsiting from VASAviation. Great vid!
Great narration too!
Glad everyone’s safe at least!
Assuming with the pax load and fuel, they’d be landing at 280-290t, max landing weight on the 300ER is 251290 kg, so not massively overweight, and it looks like they used flap 30 or 25...so they weren’t landing climb limited.
Nice job...and the brakes probably didn’t get above 4.0 units :-)
Giving that rudder trim a good workout
Wow, every once in a while it strikes me just how huge some of these planes are. Look at the shot at 4:37 where the plane passes by the fire trucks. The plane's engine is as big as the truck!
Fun fact, a 737s fuselage is the same circumference as a single 777 engine.
Thanks Matt nice catch :)
This is a perfect job 👏🏻 don’t be scary all pilots in the world put security above everything.

Fantastic...Great..
"Food - This is the best!!!" 😀
As some others have commented. This isn't as big of a deal as some may think. Engine failure at takeoff is pilot training 101. Aircraft are designed and heavily flight tested for it. Engines thrust rating are designed for engine out at takeoff. Of all the failure scenarios, engine failure at takeoff is one of the most routine procedures. Unless there was more serious engine failures causing fire or visible damage, the landing should be just that routine landing. Emergency crews are mostly there as precaution to get eyes on failed engine to assure it is safe to have the aircraft back at the gate.
Andre T as well as too make sure the brakes will not initiate a fire, remember this plane was fully loaded for a transatlantic flight therefore very heavy to stop upon landing and only one T/R to slow it down and above the wheels with the very hot brakes there is the fuel in the wings for a big part of it !
Although tested during certification you are never too cautious...
Nice work
Crazy how big these engines are. That firetruck would almost fit in there....
777 Thrust from one Engine is more than most other planes. Yes the engine failed but there wasn't really any danger unless the other engine went out. Glad they landed safely
As per certification it still amazes me that it can take off on one engine!
