WoW.......even nearly 100 years later, who doesn't absolutely love the guitar picking talents of Maybelle Carter & Jimmie Rodgers! No question two of the most influential guitarists in the history of recorded music.
It’s amazing that they did this. They were basically the only country stars of their time, and the fact that they met and recorded together is incredible.
Love this. Ok it's rehearsed but of course Jimmie and the Carters really did meet at the Bristol Sessions so there is also charm and spontaneity in these wonderful recordings. Sounding very much of the time and better because of it.
Both the “meeting the Carters” and “meeting Jimmie in Texas” pieces have all the little candid moments that make you chuckle-like you said rehearsed, but small bits that give you a window back in time. Some corny, some good chuckles
I agree....Jimmie Rogers's talking voice sounds almost identical to what he sings like...which isn't always the case with musicians...:-) I think he said " Hey, Hey" about a million times! lol
I never knew they actually met, this is great...their music styles were so different, but so important in the evolution of Country Music...this is so cool...I would have loved to hear the Carter's harmonizing on T for Texas...lol...GREAT UPLOAD MY FRIEND!!!
"Son, go get the old boy a little squirt, will ya?" I actually laughed out loud when Jimmy said that. I thought I had heard every Carter Family & Jimmy Rogers recording, and was thrilled to come across this one. Thank you for sharing it!
I went to visit Doc Watson and his family as we are distant cousins, back in the 1990'sand he took me to his studio in his basement and played me this tape of Jimmy Rogers meeting the Carter Family. We just stood there and listened to all of it and he had a big grin on his face the whole time. He was like a kid over music. He loved it especially the old songs by Jimmy Rogers. Doc was very heavily influenced by Jimmy and developed that little tag lick that Jimmy invented in a lot of his songs.
Thanx Great stuff. I've got a couple of double LP's of Jimmie Rodgers. And an LP by the Carter Familly of the 50's recordings with Jimmie Rodgers wife in the studio.
yes to me he was the godfarther of country music people will still be listerning to his music in a hundred years from now he was that good thanks for your comment nick cox
Ralph Peer at Victor Records teamed his biggest country stars and issued "Jimmie Rodgers Visits the Carter Family" (supposedly in Virginia) and "The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers in Texas." Both records were actually recorded in Louisville, Kentucky. The dialogue is corny....and Jimmie, A.P., Maybelle, and Sarah are certainly no actors. But it's great fun to hear these great recording artists in spoken conversation.
nickladey, I watched you video several times...and even commented before. But I wanted to thank you for the picture of a postcard you have at 1:33 ...I hadn't noticed it prior to now...but there is a square and compass on it, representing that he was a Freemason. I read more and confirmed it! I am also a freemason...jimmie rogers was a hero to me becuase of his music, how great it is to know he was a brother! Thank you again...It may seem insignifigant to most, but it is dear to me. -laslos
Cool video...love Jimmy Rodgers and the Carter family...Actually my great grandfather Charlie Bowman knew the Carter Family pretty well. Dont know if he ever ecorded with them. He was a fiddler made his 1st commersial recording in 1926.
yes you are right alot of artists sing difrent to there talking voce where as jimmies sounded the same he was one of the all time grates thanks for posting nick cox hull england
I think Sarah was saying "revenue officers", better known back then in Texas as the Feds or the LCBs, who were trying to catch people running stills or bootlegging (or both). I had several uncles who did both, and they taked about the "Revenuers". All dead now. RIP
I'm pretty sure I have every one of Jimmy's recordings. I'll check and see if I can get it on youtube for you. I'm traveling at this time, but as soon I possible I'll post it.
as historical doctumentation the joke about "2possums up one tree" was a "ive got good news and bad news" joke it was the depths of the depression and so Carter was saying 2 possums up one tree which they lived off of them--however it was a black gum tree--the highest tree in the forest and broad leaf. Once a possum goes up it you cannot see them let alone shoot them down. to make triply clear "2 possums up one tree" thats good times--- not a black gum tree--thus the joke about the depression
KeyWestBluesX I have hear it before out of old men before (kentucky) and they for sure meant black/purple gum as a colored mans gums and eating possum Idk if your from the South or not but a it's been a long running joke about blacks eating possum...
thanks for yer comment there is another one the carter family meet jimmie rodgers its good i have the mp3 of it plus double cd of jimmie fantastic music love it thanks nick

The group photos of random people don't really add to the video. And the photos of the Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle group are from much later than the time period of the recording.
@aphrabenn yes they were good together in fact very good but for the time and the recording of Jimmy Rodgers and equipment used its good. thanks for the comment nick cox hull
BACK IN THE EARLY 1900s EVERYBODY, EVERYWHERE, ALL THE TIME, STAYED DRUNK AS HELL - THE PROOF IS HERE! LMAO! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS VIDEO, IT WAS GREAT!
TO "RASH IS KING IN MY DIAPERS", ARE YOU ACTUALLY STUPID ENOUGH TO BELIEVE THAT PROHIBITION STOPPED ALL SALE OF ALCOHOL IN THE USA, GROW UP AND READ SOME HISTORY! ALSO "RASH" STFU, AND ASK SANTA FOR A SENSE OF HUMOR, EITHER WAY, STFU, THANK YOU KIDDIE!
WHY OF COURSE THEY WERE DRUNKS, JUST LIKE YOURS - I REMEMBER THE TOWN DRUNK WELL, HIS NAME WAS BUTTLER, BUT WE CALLED HIM "BAD BOTTLE BUTTLER". LMAO! :^)

@edisonphonographfan thanks for the comment i prasume its about the to possums up the gum tree you are refering to any way glad you liked it nick cox hull england
AT 1-55 any opinions that the picture shows that Rodgers was quite likely a mixed race black man? there was alot of people in the woodpile in the rural areas and Rodgers parents and birth--cannot really be documented. Factor in that his singing and mannerisms and relaxed nature or quite simply that of a black man. This is a historical question and im not trying to be torn apart.
Jeff C that and if ya didnt catch the cheeky racist joke about the two possums in a black gum tree and Jimmy goes "uhh ooooo" and laughs and says dog gone . think his mannerisms and accent is just typical of the deep South vs AP and his Applachian accent.
@pds3939 Well, Rodgers and the Carters were working from a script. Yes, the material is corny, and none of the participants would ever have won an acting prize. But compared with Maybelle and Sara, I thought that AP Carter and Rodgers were not bad at delivering their lines for the recording. If Rodgers sounded odd with his yodel while speaking, for example, it's just because the yodel was his trademark, and he was doing what the script for the record called for.

Its cool to hear Jimmie"s Mississippi accent. I love pre WW2 country and blues. Thanks for posting this moment in time.
These recordings are amazing, the very beginning of folk and country music preserved for many generations to come. Excellent stuff!!
you are right thanks for the comment
This one is a gem. Getting to hear everyone’s “talking” voices.

Funny how this comment stuck with me all these years later. I swear I’d there ever was a catchphrase, this is it.
Those Carter ladies were all songbirds. Beautiful voices each and every one
And Helen was the best
Immer wieder schön anzuhören...
I never knew they actually met, this is great...their music styles were so different, but so important in the evolution of Country Music...this is so cool...I would have loved to hear the Carter's harmonizing on T for Texas...lol...GREAT UPLOAD MY FRIEND!!!
Excellent! What a great, intimate, look into Jimmie and the Carter family.
"Son, go get the old boy a little squirt, will ya?" I actually laughed out loud when Jimmy said that. I thought I had heard every Carter Family & Jimmy Rogers recording, and was thrilled to come across this one. Thank you for sharing it!

The "Singing Brakeman" Jimmie Rodgers. He and the Carter Family were the beginning of Country Music.
Ralph Peer at Victor Records teamed his biggest country stars and issued "Jimmie Rodgers Visits the Carter Family" (supposedly in Virginia) and "The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers in Texas." If you have "mother queen of my heart" it would be awesome. I have not been able to find jimmy doing that one, just a bunch of covers.
Elvis meets The Beatles of early country music.

Two possums up one tree. Jimmy couldn't handle that one.
as historical doctumentation the joke about "2possums up one tree" was a "ive got good news and bad news" joke it was the depths of the depression and so Carter was saying 2 possums up one tree which they lived off of them--however it was a black gum tree--the highest tree in the forest and broad leaf. Well he was instrumental in showing the whites how great black music was, kind of like an early Elvis.
Lol wut
funn stuff. That sounds like a heathy place to be living.
I love the music, but that's some bad acting, lol!
Did Woody Guthrie ever meet A.P Carter?
sorry i dont know but some one on here might know
No, they never met.
They clearly were not great actors. Seems awkward and corny.
This is great. You’re just a crackhead.
