A couple of additional notes: this footage consists of outtakes, so it's possible that Rodgers was given more attention in the released newsreel, but I wouldn't know how to go about locating a copy, if one exists at all. And to all those commenting that it's Will Rogers and not Jimmie Rodgers; yes, Will Rogers is indeed the main subject of the film, however the character identified as Jimmie can be seen behind him in the background, and is specifically highlighted in the video at 00:49, 03:37, and 04:27, and with a close-up still at 03:44.
This crap they play on the radio now, country?what a joke.i hardly accept geo.strait, much less some cityboy using all kinds of voice gizmos, and they still sound horrible.
Also of note: The airplane is a Ford Tri-Motor, manufactured by the companies of Henry Ford. Fewer than 200 of these tri-motors were manufactured by Ford.
I read somewhere where Jimmie toured with Will Rodgers . They did benefits for people who were affected by the Dust Bowl. I don’t doubt for one minute that was Jimmie. It’s a wonder Will didn’t have him come up and talk to him also.
Will Rogers was known by all segments of society. I wonder if Jimmie Rodgers was known by the majority of Americans. I doubt if any of my relatives in Pennsylvania ever heard of him. But this was Texas so you might expect him to be interviewed. Of course, there are no recorded interviews of Jimmie, as far as I know. This is exciting film to me.
Yes, that is the figure presumed to be Rodgers. This footage was shot in San Antonio, Texas, no more than a day or two before they were photographed together at Blue Yodeler's Paradise in Kerrville.
@@Wendeajo This footage is actually from an outtakes reel, so it's possible that he was at least acknowledged in the released newsreel, but I wouldn't know where to find a copy of that, or if one even exists.
It certainly looks very much like Jimmie. Given his enormous popularity by 1931, though, I find it very surprising that he was neither mentioned by Will Rogers nor given any media attention at this event. If I had to bet, I'd bet it's Jimmie, but the lack of attention is curious.
I believe this footage is actually outtakes from the released newsreel, so it's possible that he was acknowledged in that, but I wouldn't know how to go about tracking down a copy.
Notions of celebrity and propriety were probably different then, even with crowds. You'd have to wait for Sinatra and his bobby soxer fans, or the Beatles for more contemporary reactions. Remember also, Will Rogers was a HUGE celebrity then. I learned of him before I discovered Jimmy.
I love country music and I discovered that Jimmie Rodgers can be considered the "father" of this genre. I looked for the lyrics of his songs and...a lot of Johnny Cash is Jimmie! That doesn't make me love less Johnny, on the contrary!
It's Will Rogers being interviewed, Jimmie Rodgers is thought to be in the background wearing a big white cowboy hat. The hat is very similar to the one he wore several days after this event when he and Will were photographed together at Blue Yodelers Paradise, Jimmie's home in Kerrville.
It can’t be Jimmy Rodgers. If it was people would’ve paid attention to him. He was the biggest country star in the world. In that video he’s completely ignored.
Will Rogers is the focus of the newsreel, but the character tentatively identified as Jimmie Rodgers is seen standing in the background, and is highlighted in the video at 00:49, 03:37, and 04:27, and examined close-up at 03:44.
Will Rogers is, as stated in the video description, the main subject of the footage. The figure identified as Jimmie Rodgers can be seen standing behind Rogers, and is circled at three different points during the video-and zoomed in on once-to aid in identification.

Jimmie wore the same hat as in the film (or an identical one) when he was photographed with Will Rogers at Blue Yodeler's Paradise the day after this footage was shot, as well as in many other candid photos. If you follow the link to the blog post in this video's description, you can see two different photos of Jimmie, taken days apart, wearing that same hat.

I can't believe none of the reporters interviewed him.
I read somewhere where Jimmie toured with Will Rodgers . They did benefits for people who were affected by the Dust Bowl. I don’t doubt for one minute that was Jimmie. It’s a wonder Will didn’t have him come up and talk to him also.

Yes, that is the figure presumed to be Rodgers. This footage was shot in San Antonio, Texas, no more than a day or two before they were photographed together at Blue Yodeler's Paradise in Kerrville.

That was 7 days after my Mom's 1st birthday.
Jimmie Rodgers used to come to see my grandfather and sit on the front steps and play and sing. Both died of TB. Hmmm...
I love country music and I discovered that Jimmie Rodgers can be considered the "father" of this genre. I looked for the lyrics of his songs and...a lot of Johnny Cash is Jimmie! That doesn't make me love less Johnny, on the contrary!
He’s busy talking to a little boy, his own? He was a good man.
That is WILL RODGERS not JIMMIE......

I don't understand why Jimmie was totally ignored! Was he not that popular then until after his death or something?
Does he say Rodgers at 1:55 ?
I think he says, "If the rain don't turn out to be any good, why, it's a Democratic rain."
Maybe.why didn't will introduce him?nice catch.maybe.
