  • Redditor grw110 sent me an amazing collection of masks to test. This video features 4 really promising ones from Korea, Taiwan, Germany/USA and Canada. And one of them I really liked - it’s too small for me, but it’s a really neat mask. Big thanks to grw110 for the masks.
Fit is very individual. I have a medium sized face and a high nose bridge. You may get a very different fit than I do, which is why I'd really like to see more people have access to mask fit testing so they can find the masks that fit and filter for them really well.
There are two basic kinds of fit testing used for N95s and other filtering facepiece respirators:
The kind I do with a particle counter mask fit testing machine ("quantitative"), and there is the kind where a flavored aerosol is used, that you can taste if the aerosol gets through your mask ("qualitative").
I'm doing a very abbreviated version of mask fit testing with just a static 60 second test, but I'm using the same type of particle count test used on N100 masks, so some of the fit test scores may be lower than if I used the less demanding N95 mask fit test. Testing for workplace use involves moving your head and body to make sure the mask works even when you aren't sitting still.

In the video I'm using a PortaCount mask fit testing machine that gives scores in "Fit Factor".
Fit factor is the the concentration of ambient particles outside the mask divided by the concentration inside the mask. So if there were 1000 particles outside and 10 inside, 1000 divided by 10 is 100, so the air inside the mask is 100 times cleaner and the fit factor is 100.
The Portacount counts particles from .02 to 1 micron in size.

Normal people won't pull out an anvil to straighten out the wire? Of course not! An anvil seems like the wrong tool for that. I'd probably start with my eyeglass frame adjustment pliers. Flat on one side, small radius on the other. I suppose that those aren't a common tool, though.
I knew that the Aura was considered very good in terms of fitting lots of people, but I didn't realize how much better it was. Not sure I'm going to bother looking for alternatives.

Great video Gerard, how can I send you some masks to test?

Hi, what do you have in mind?
I enjoy getting a chance to test masks I've not tried before, but I always try to give the caveat that my tests primarily show how they fit me, though the testing can give some general insight in to the qualities and performance of individual makes and models of mask.

Thanks for the video, where did you order that Portacount fit testing machine from?

The PortaCount is a surplus unit from eBay. They are a bit of a crap shoot because the old models haven't been made in years and are no longer repaired or calibrated by the company that made them, TSI.
They have a laser diode that dies eventually. But the machine will still look like it's working. So if you do buy one off of eBay be aware that even a unit that claims to have been tested and working, may have a defective laser diode that may not be able to count particles or run fit tests accurately.
You can download the manuals and read up on how the machines work, and on what accessories they need to come with for you to be able to use them. Some of the listings do not come with all of the parts necessary to use the machine, and some of the parts are not ever sold on eBay separately. So you need to get a unit that has a certain critical components in order to get the unit to function.

Do you think the can99e could’ve had an acceptable fit if you had added earloop adjusters?

On someone else, maybe? On me the nose wire just was not really very good.
