They were brought there, and sold into perpetual servitude to replace the diminishing Taino population on the island. After the Spanish monarchy had authorised the exportation of Africans to their colony named Hispaniola, based on several papal bulls from the Holy Empire, the very first voyage of the slave trade left from the west coast of Africa to Hispaniola mostly transporting people from tribes in Congo, Dahomey, and Guinea. Still today, the expressions," Sé nèg Guinin nou yé. Sé nèg Kongo nou yé. It was the land where the slaves revolted against their owners, conducted a 12-year rebellion there, defeated the french army at the battle of Vertieres on November 18, 1803, forcibly took possession of the land of the french colony from France by expelling the french General Rochambeau, and his soldiers from the land, and sent a message to the french leaders in France that," the indigenous army has taken possession of your colony, and by no means, will we relinquish it." On January 1, 1804, the revolutionary leader, General Jean Jacques Dessalines proclaimed the birth of a new nation on the land of the former french colony. To aggravate the situation, and infuriating the french Emperor "Napoleon Bonaparte," General Dessalines reverted to name the land by its former Taino given name, "Ayiti," not known as "Haiti.
