Just like Linus said, it makes a huge difference if you want the most smoothest movement and precision on your mouse.

I used my g502 without a mousepad for about a year but the table started to gloss over where my mouse was and the movements became a tiny bit less responsive. Have a full desk mousepad now and it looks better and feels a lot more comfortable.
i've been at friends places, where they didn't use a mousepad, and you could really see it over long periods of time on their desk. Just like people using office chairs on wooden floorboards, and not having a mat under it. There comes this circle tearing from the small movements
The only reason I have a mousepad is to protect the feet of my expensive mouse with too many buttons

The Fellowes mouse pads with Gel wrist rests (the rectangular ones, not the weird bulbous ones) used to be the best, they were so soft and comfortable, but then they switched manufacturing from the US to China and they turned stiff and cheap. I wish they would make the old style again they were so good.
Corsair style extra large(under keyboard) mousepad has been great. Been using it for years now without any fraying, and being large enough to go under the keyboard as well means it doesn't move.
Tip:when u hear Linis saying "speaking of (something)" close the video asap
Yes
You don't really need one but I wore a rough spot in my desk from not using one. So now I ALWAYS use one.
definitely that's weird if you don't have a sponsor.... TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU! 👍👐
the only reason to buy a mouse pad: it protects your table everytime you do the thing where you slam down your mouse onto the table
I broke a scroll wheel doing that
Never slam a controller onto a desk. That's what you do with an expensive wireless Bluetooth controller, not a cheap office mouse.
Sometimes with a modern mouse is that the light can damage some surfaces such as veneered woods. A thing I've noticed is that veneered woods have small bumps if using a mouse on it without a mouse pad
I use my mousepad because literally all of the mice i use (optical or laser, cheap or expensive) don't seem to work AT ALL on any surface but a mousepad. Without the mousepad, the cursor just jumps around on the screen or gets stuck as if I were using a ball mouse. So, yes, I still need a mousepad.
That makes zero sense. Not working _optimally_ is much different than "not work AT ALL." I've never come across a optical/laser mouse that didn't work on pretty much every surface. From my bed sheets, to the top of my jeans, to the center console in my truck. They always work quite well. Not optional, but quite well.
Andrew Delashaw except glass tho

@@dargs3993 ?
@@TheRealBleach No?
I don't really recall that about the ballmice no.. however the first gen optical mice on the other hand... was quite a wild ride without a mousepad.
Sun workstations at university needed metal mousepads with grid printed on them. They would not track if the pad was not in the right orientation. SGI workstations had almost identical but incompatible pads, that would make you thin the mouse was broken if interchanged. Hilarity ensued when this was figured out and pads randomly exchanged. Pretty soon all mousepads were marked on the backside.

My Razer Naga actually runs worse on cloth mouse pads. Apparently it has something to do with the lazer tracking. It is frustrating though when my only mouse pad is a cloth one.

Meanwhile i'm here with a trackball resting it on my knee because i don't even have to move my hand at all
meanwhile I'm thinking about a mousepad because I just finished this nice computer desk build and my mouse always seems to leave some residue on whatever surface it's used on, and I don't feel like having that on my nice newly made desk

Yes. My mouse feet got ruined when it wasn't on a mousepad. The regular wooden surface I had at the time scraped it up and flattened the rubber grip on the mouse(G502) and it is in a bad state. Then I got a mousepad and been fine ever since.

The last time i used a mousepad was back in 2006 so no, you are not alone lel.
you are not and also 2 years of low dpi (mouse all over the place) and my desk isnt scratched at all
You don’t “need” a mouse pad for optical/laser mice, however, they are still necessary to keep the furniture from getting worn down and they provide a consistent surface for movement.
The thing is, I don't have 20 bucks paying around to buy a mouse. I got a g300s that when moving fast on my desk, it glitches out. But when moving on paper, it is perfect. Thus thing is, my build is 1300 dollars (with 144hz monitors that are about $300)
Answer to title: depends on the surface you mouse on, bye.
I prefer one but I live without it anyway.
i have a 10$ mouse and i havent use a mouse pad since 2013, even tho the flat part of the desk i use as mouse pad is looking someone tried to dig trough it
I use a big black glass where I put both my keyboard and mouse. The mouse slips better on the glass, and it's easy to clean.

Can you make more interesting and important Tech Quickies.. like stuff people actually care about and could learn something new from.. like before.. this is becoming straight up stupid now..
for example a subject that isn't very clear to me is CPU instructions & CPU instruction sets.. what are they? what are the most popular ones? what do they do?
This is a nice vid
Good example, why not answer those sort of quickies. In answer to your question though, a CPU Instruction is what it says, it is an instruction that is given to a Central Processor Unit, to perform an action. There are lots of many different instructions, but am example of a well used one would be mov a,b, which would tell the processor to move the contents of the b register into the a register. Hope this helps. 🙄
The video might not be bad.. I mean Linus rarely makes bad videos.. but do you really wake up in the morning and ask yourself "Do I still need to use a mousepad?"
Did you ever ask yourself that? Even if you did, how important is it to know.. and how hard is it to answer that question yourself without watching a TechQuickie about it..
@Peter You see that seems really interesting.. I'm sure that would a fun video to watch.. Also a subject I'm even more interested in is Instruction Sets (those with the weird names) Linus did use to make those kind of videos back in the day... but now the videos are less related to the technology and computers.. I mean just look at the last few videos...
"Why Do UA-cam Channels Die?"
"iOS 12 Explained"
And although there were a few interesting videos that weren't related to technology at all, I would still appreciate the old TechQuickie type of videos like:
M.2 As fast as possible
Core i3, i5, i7 Explained
32 bit vs 64 bit
What is Anti Aliasing (really educational video)
What is HyperThreading
VGA DP HDMI DVI differences...
Be aware these are the most popular videos on the channel and are the ones people like the most.. I guess it just requires more work and research and that why they've stopped making those..
"Whats the most popular CPU Instruction"
ummm i dont think they work like that..
That why I always carry an A4 paper sheet with me (?)
You are the best Linus ,you have to love your personality if nothing else.
