    What I love about this scene is how hue talks to his son. He’s not trying to berate or be mean to him, he genuinely cares for his safety. You can hear the shakiness in his voice when he tells his son to stay quiet.

    If there's any good to be said about Fitzgerald is that he was simply trying to survive. Life and death are literally tied to those pelts. He has nothing else. If he didn't sell them, that would have been it for him. Thus, he's forced to become desperate and self-serving. There are a lot of Fitzgerald mentalities out in the world today but I would consider them far worse than Fitzgerald himself because they are not motivated by survival..they are motivated by greed.

      A lot of people underestimate his understanding of how the natives work too. At the beginning of the movie he was the only one suspicious about “Calder” and where he was. He was also upset by Glass shooting and killing the Elk. “Whatever it is they’re hunting out there, I hope it don’t need another shot.” A few minutes later, Calder turns up naked and castrated and the camp is devastated.

    • @GamePlayer775
      @GamePlayer775 6 років тому +25

      Interesting enough, he was one of those villians that has the inner madness of humanity woven into him, and if you look closely you can see the reasoning behind some of his actions.
      For example, at the begininng of the movie he states he wouldve had the whole group moving on and leaving by that time to avoid them all being killed by the indians. It is Hugh Glass who draws the attack in the first place, by firing the shot. Fitzgerald also immediately asks members of the group where (forgive my spelling) Caulder is, who is the man first shot and killed crying "help" at the initiation of the fight. Sure, during the fight, Ftizgerald asks men to grab the furs instead of just "getting to the boat", As Glass does, but once again, if you look at it closely, Hugh Glass wouldve been choked to death in this scene were it not for another member of the group saving him, by killing an Indian. In comparison Fitzgerald saves Bridger's life by killing an Indian! The scene depicted here shows Fitzgerald being loud and obnoxious, but he has a point. Theyve all been working theyre asses off for "six months" and for what? Just for Glass to draw Indians in and cause the fight? Not to mention theyre leaving the furs, which was the purpose of going on this expedition in the first place. Im sure many of us would feel the same! But everyone around him remains calm, and afterwards once again, Hugh Glass goes off alone only to get mauled by the bear, firing another shot, which could draw in more Indians, and get more people killed, but no one in the group seems to care!
      Now, Fitzgerald killing Hawk is emotional, but what about all the other dead men Hugh Glass essentially single handedly got killed? What about theur families? Fitzgerald even stays behind but at this point I could see where he would be frustrated (In addition to Glass not having a son in the first place irl). He lies to Bridger, yes, and his manipulation is for the most part cruel, but if i were in his place i would be frustrated too! Hes probably frustrated with all the unnecessary dying and doesnt want to participate? He probablh has PTSD from the indians pretty much scalping him as he explains later to Bridger, by the fire, but if we look back on the beginning fight, he was just interested in getting the furs and saving "his own", rather than retaliating.
      Theres much more you could draw onto as well but in conclusion, Fitzgerald deserves a second look by critics. Tom Hardy's portrayal of him makes him very easy to hate, I agree, but he was not always wrong.

Its just an unfortunate situation for all of them honestly. Hell living in such a savage and ruthless era. Nothing seems fair at all. The pay for the hard work in those 6 months. They barely broke even. Bridger and hawk being exposed to so much brutality at a young age. Hugh getting mauled by the grizzly. The cold. The Indians just trying to protect their land and wildlife. Tom Hardy is on point but Leo must have been like oh shit he's so good at his role... I better not screw up the take. Leo may not have much to say here but the way he acts in the background letting tom hardy shine, digesting the words and then finding a moment in the scene and nailing his part is phenomenal because everything was one take leading up to the moment when Glass speaks. And if you don't deliver that moment, the whole scene would have collapsed. Everything that happened beforehand, the guys carrying pelts up the hill, the camera following different characters, tom hardy's brilliant performance... then imagine the camera finally arriving at you, the whole weight of the scene landing on your shoulders. The whole atmosphere and tone of the film. There is so much pressure not to screw it up. And the way Leo delivers the line is honestly goddamn beautiful. In my opinion leo steals the scene. And the moment he teaches his son about life reminds me of many times when my father lecture me. It is a very raw performance, there are few lines he has, very simple lines yet he gives a lot of truth to them. You would have to fully create a whole back story in your mind in order to deliver lines like Leo does. Because you feel his pain. His past.

    Acting in this film was incredible. I really felt Hawks pain, having to put up with the constant put downs from Fitzgerald. Leo’s character tries to keep him alive but in turn talks down to him as well. Setting up his final scene where his father is not there to restrain his young and naive anger towards Fitzgerald for the constant oppression. I knew once Leo was incapacitated that his son would no survive for long without him

    Tom Hardy is so good in this movie. Without him...there may not be a film worth watching. I suspect it would still be good, but I BELIEVE that man to be a trapper....I BELIEVE he was scalped....I BELIEVE his soul was as hard as the flint in is pouch. Maybe he gets all the great lines....I believe he made the lines he got GREAT. One of my favorite performances ever that I can cite in a film. Nurse Ratchet....Scarlett O'Hara, Sgt Hartman, Henry Chinaski, William Muny....Tuco....many others, but Tom Hardy in this film is one of the best ever.
