  • Spending the birthday (September 20th) at the right place, at the right time, on BNSF's Marceline Subdivision. The proud territory of the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe is still being used to it's maximum, by the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, hauling the hottest cargo in the country, east and west, along the rolling hills and prairies of cornfield Missouri. Work has been going on at La Plata Amtrak Station, for major renovation, as the entire platform is undergoing refurbishing. The inside of the station also still has a ways to go with major work, and areas around the foundation of the building. But, even with maintenance work going on around the La Plata area, we were lucky for the guys to be on duty off the tracks, which kept traffic flowing the way we wanted, very consistent and at maximum speeds.
Locations visited include Gibbs, La Plata, Bucklin, Marceline, Mendon, Norborne & Hardin on the Marceline Sub, and Brunswick, Mettler & Dewitt on NS's Kansas City District. We end the tour with Kansas City locations including Lenexa, Argentine Yard and the famous "Santa Fe Junction."
This is every train I captured from the moment we: Me, Eric Sturniolo (EMS318) and Jariel Ealey, encountered, from the moment we arrived in La Plata, just before midnight on the 19th, and from the moment we left Kansas City, on the 22nd. All of this footage has been collaged into a feature length 3 and a half hour presentation.
The best highlights include Santa Fe Warbonnets and Yellowbonnets, The ATSF Searchlight signals still standing in Bucklin & Marceline, Ferromex, Norfolk Southerns on and off the joint trackage between WB & CA Junctions, CSX, H1s, BNSF H2 9-44CW 5456 with a very rare Leslie RS3K horn, a Santa Fe Yellowbonnet GP39-2 and a very rare KCS Grey SD70ACe 4024 (1 of 4 left in Grey) both online, in the same consist of an 11 engine H-GALKCK, a KCS Grey De Mexico AC4400CW, CEFX AC4400CW 1056 on an Intermodal, a BN Cascade Green painted GP30 and various engines at Argentine Yard, a new Amtrak SC-44 Charger, the Southwest Chief running 90MPH with a rare 8-32BWH in the consist, BNSF Warbonnet 9-44CW 4712 leading a Vehicle Train, the converted tubegon grain trains, the LORAM rail grinder in a rolling meet with a hot 70mph Z train, rolling meets standing in between two passing trains at Norborne and that beautiful, wide open, prairie sunset.
This is absolutely one of the best documentations you'll see for the Marceline Sub, with the Fort Scott Sub in Kansas as a bonus, and will be one to be remembered for many to see, both young and old, and in the future. Sit back, relax and enjoy over 3 and a half hours of what was once the mighty Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe. To complete the journey, we made a special stop at the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, MO.
