I've never been one to care about matching, I've been with my wife for 20+ years, I've always been a jeans and t-shirt guy, prefer work or hiking boots,my paddle is ok,($25 extremez 2 from academy) moves me around,I'm on disability so kayak isn't that great either (lifetime tamarack 120) but it works so far, your videos are great and informative, keep it up,I'm new to kayak fishing so the advice is welcomed!
Your videos are so informative. I just bought my first fishing kayak (Bonafide RS117) and have watched so many of your videos. Once all the ice is gone in Northern Illinois I am hitting the water with your knowledge in my head.
Hey Chad, first time commenting. Just wanted to thank you for all the videos you have made. This one in particular was extremely helpful for a new yaker. I started with an aluminum paddle the yak manufacturer merchandise it as specifically for the model yak I got. This video guided me to now run a Bending Branches Angler Pro. The difference is night and day. It’s a totally different experience on the water.
Thanks Chad. Well said. I always explain to people the bottom hand is more for guiding and blade placement of the paddle. The upper hand is for the power. It should be doing a cross body jab. I love my greenland paddle more than a traditional
Chad you look great and it makes Kristie happy . I started kayak fishing two years ago after seeing your videos and I followed the advice you gave about buying the best paddle that I could afford and I have not looked back. Best advice I have gotten since I started, keep up the good work. All the best to you and your family.
I'm a t shirt and shorts guy, the other day i wore a long sleeved shirt with blue jeans and someone commented that i didn't have the button holes lined up....... back to T shirts for me. I love the presentation that is packed with good info, i agree with the saying " buy the best you can afford, you won't be sorry"! btw... pinochle is a fun game.
Chad, thank you for your insight and sharing. I ended biting the bullet and bought the best paddle I could afford. My family and I are just getting into kayaking and kayak fishing. I bought the Bending Branches Carbon Plus. The kids will continue the free paddles that came with the vibe kayaks. I liked your description of how much a $400.00 paddle can cost $1000.00. I cannot tell you how many times that has happened to me in my life. I went through that with canoes and paddles for the canoes
LOL @ 7:50 you went into a slight "Wo-Man" moment there I caught that! Now onto asking...ummm I didn't buy an adjustable paddle...I bought my first 80 dollar Pelican which I think I'm happy with that has a glue hand indent that auto adjusts to knuckle...Now that you mentioned length adjustment I'm ...well...bummed! I'd have liked some extra length as I've touched on the need already and this is my first spin on a yak! LOL at 16:02 and ya know...image often improves drastically in all fields so you've nailed the presentation obviously! You come off as "braw", magnetic with that little edge of hmmm, I must know how he can do that (present in them threads) and you only add to the character cause I see at times a slightly rowdy little bugger I hung with growing up so with that said you then should be able to nail anything as you fit well with anything!
Thanks for the great tips Chad, appreciate the practical deviation from the "high-end" paddling instruction for us anglers. And there's nothing wrong with a little color coordination, besides, you know what they say, "happy wife-happy life".
I just really enjoy your videos Chad, all of them! 👍😀 The only thing I might say is, “Please remember us little folks who are struggling to make ends meet. You might want to keep in mind that you’re asking some of us to spend more on a paddle, than we did on our kayaks. Thousands and thousands of us, own Tamaracks etc. Don’t get me wrong, I’m saving up for a Old Town 106 powered by Minn Kota. 👍😎🎣💦🌈
I do Claudia, but I also don’t want people to spend and waste money on the things that will literally last forever if you buy quality. I’m working a a series if Buyers Guide videos this year to address products at different price points
You made a comment about "what kind of man Doesn't own a grinder? Shoes matching your shirt???? Only IF your purse and accessories match? What kind of "man" matches his shoes to his shirt? "Wo" man. Another Awesome video.
I always learn some thing from you, I'm a new kayaker in fact because of covid 19 I've not had my new Old Town top water 106 in the water yet, also I don't want to go by myself for the first time. My friend whose been a kayaker for a long time guided me to the Carlisle magic angler paddle, and he will be going with me for the first time, I'm not a young guy at 77 but I gave up Motorcycling for the kayak, good choice I think. I love watching your channel thanks for what you do teaching us the ropes.👍😷
enjoyed the paddling lesson. Who knew there was that much to it, no wonder the fish are gone after I get to my spot. LOL I'm 64 and have never considered matching my shoes to my shirt. And I have worked in corporate America all my adult life. Maybe in sports that makes since; Carolina blue cleats with Carolina blue jersey. Be safe...
Ok now what? I did exactly like you said lined my knuckles up glued my right hand to paddle left hand as the usual grease hand etc. Now I'm paddling smoothly so can you do a video on how to fish with paddle glued to my hand ?
Maybe sounds silly, but I love the paddles that have feet and inches marked on them. Also really like the paddles that have a little nick in the blade to help unsnap lures from objects underwater. I got a Bending Branches Angler Scout in Sage Green with an Aluminum Shaft and love it when I need it from my pedal drive kayak that ran me about a $100.
See that's why I only have my work boots. that way i can't match my shirt and shoes. Loving the videos too, I'm looking into getting a kayak in the next few weeks once all this ice melts and your videos are super helpful
Great instructions Chad! Very well explained and I think I get the concept. I'm buying my first kayak and want to learn the proper way from the get-go and you've just helped me out a bunch! Good advice on the paddles too. Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge :))
Hey Chad it's OK to have a coordinated wardrobe ... and if it take Kristi to do it for you so long as it is still something you would wear any way just maybe not in that combination let her do it. She wants to help! If it starts to approach Fu-Fu then put your foot down by all means! LOL! Seriously you are still wearing fishing garb from what I can see ... go with the flow! I wear jeans and a cotton camo shirt most of the time because I live alone and well I don't have a 'she' looking out for my best interest and wanting me to look my best. And I'm not in the public view all the time! BTW ... We differ slightly in our paddle technique ... I don't use a solid glue hand ... mine is right hand control but because of my wrist action I have to loosen a bit when the 'glue' in your stroke is looked down. Other than that your demo was spot on.
Thanks, Chad. I am looking forward to that video where you talk about pedaling. I'm feeling the pressure to put the pedal drive on my Flint. I think I'm just fine with a paddle, though.
Great info! I will definitely be implementing the paddle rudder technique. As for your question about attire, I think if Christy is picking the outfit, you're probably good to go. Lol
Hi Chad...Great video is very informative. I have a question: My kayak is 36" wide and I'm 5'6" ...how long should my paddle be? I have a 94.5 inch paddle and it feels short to me..
At that width and your height I would opt for a 250-260 CM paddle. I’m not a huge fan of long paddles like that but if your boat is over 34” and you are under 6’ it’s pretty much a necessity. So, by comparison that’s about 98 to 102 inches.
Hey Chad where are you located I am in New York myself in the Bronx area but I do kayaking in The lakes love the sport used to do it when I was younger a lot but always rent the kayak and the paddles now I just got myself a kayak in a cheap paddle would like to get in contact with you someday thank you
Great info for us rookies , just getting into kayak fishing . Matching ensemble [ my big word of the day ] will put you on man card probation ? My wife is just proud if my shirt doesn’t have holes or stains .....set the hook brother...
The answer is no!!!! nice video thanks. I'm choosing a double bladed paddle for my canoe and I love bending branches. Just a tip maybe if you put the specs for the bending branches (weight in particular and materials) in your product description and include the review in your title ( eg. w/ Bending Branches paddle break down) this video could blow up
Hey Chad , I bought a bending branches angler carbon pro 140 to 155cm , I went by their length chart for paddles . I'm 5' 7" my kayak is a pursuit width is 35 '. According to them that's correct . But watching some of your videos now I'm questioning myself . Should I return for a smaller one ?? Should be arriving this week ..Thank you!! Semper Fi !!
I see your paddle offset in your videos. Wondered the correct position. Hight of person? width of kayak? Wind? What would be start to extreme position. Great video.
Thank you so very much for all your advice sn sharing of knowledge! I will be getting my first kayak soon and cant wait to put this info to use!!! Keep up the good work! PS. If it makes the wife happy that your shirt and shoes match then no other opinion should count. Lol at least that is what my wife would say!!!
Chad, I've got a follow up question. Could you explain how to choose the best length of paddle? I want to buy a new "forever" paddle, but I'm concerned about getting the correct length. I have a Jackson Big Rig and a Nucanoe F12. Both are very wide kayaks.
Please, be sure to buy the best performing paddle you can afford from the start. I purchased a Werner paddle and was absolutely shocked at the $400 dollar price tag. However, when I tested other, heavier paddles made of weaker material and then tested my Werner, the benefits were over the top noticeable. I now have two years and nearly 500 miles of kayaking on this paddle and it's been an absolute TOOL, for my YAK passion! Your paddle will become a TOOL, to get you where you want to go and get you out of trouble, many many times over and durability and performance will matter 100% of the time. P.S. Chad, excellent job my friend and keep up the good work!
I've been married for 17 years and I always wear what I want to wear. Anyways as far as the paddle goes I agree I've got one right now that I paid somewhere around $100 for. It was all I could afford at the time. But I'll hopefully be upgrading to a good paddle for this fishing season.
Good video. I feel wise because after buying an inexpensive used paddle to start with, I thought “a paddle is my motor, I want a good damn motor and bought a BB Angler Pro.” I’m “thrifty” but have zero regrets. I think it’s kind of odd for a man to own enough shoes to color coordinate with their clothes. I’ve owned like 2 pairs of shoes that weren’t work boots, hunting boots, or flip flops, in the past 10 years. If they match my other clothes it’s purely coincidence.
You like myself are fortunate to have the love of a good woman. All us neanderthals need women like Kristie in our lives. Keep up the good work Kristie.
High angle or low angle? Why can’t I get a straight answer? Before I can pick my paddle I have to start by choosing one or the other. I’m totally confused.
For a performance kayak that is narrower and facilitates it I would go with a high angle. If you plan to paddle a wider kayak then a longer, low angler paddle would be better. Hope that helps
I love your videos, keep it up! This is probably not the venue for making a request, but here goes. Could you do a purchasing kayak video on inflatable fishing kayaks for those of us who do not have any storage space large enough for a regular one? Thank you!!
I'm still struggling with the Belt and shoes matching. Hard to make Tennis shoes match a belt. For shoes, I generally wear the same pair of shoes until they die. Then replace them, Only changing in the winter or summer (IE: waterproof for snow and sandals in the summer for confort)
Chad, I'm 66 yrs old, married 38.5 yrs, and I wear jeans, black T-shirts and walmart tennies or sandals. Wear what makes you comfortable. 'nuff said. New to kayaking, thanks for paddle info... 😎👍
Thanks for putting these videos together. Hoping to get into a kayak in the next year or so. But to answer your question. My wife and I have been together for 18 years she gave up dressing me 16byears ago. I think it's a phase all wives go through. I call it Ken doll syndrome.
Chad, Great content the spoon/cereal analogy is a great one. If anyone is planning on paddling a kayak for the rest of their life invest in a great paddle as your first one it definitely will save your body and your pocket in the long run. Learning proper techniques early in anyone's kayak experiences will keep you paddling for the long term. Chad it has nothing to do with #MetroSexual #RealMenRealStyle we always have to look good at everything we do #KayakFishing as well.
OH MY GOD! When you said "if your not smart enough to understand this" i just about pissed myself! I love it. Tell it how it is brother.
I just “Keep it Reel!” Thanks
I've never been one to care about matching, I've been with my wife for 20+ years, I've always been a jeans and t-shirt guy, prefer work or hiking boots,my paddle is ok,($25 extremez 2 from academy) moves me around,I'm on disability so kayak isn't that great either (lifetime tamarack 120) but it works so far, your videos are great and informative, keep it up,I'm new to kayak fishing so the advice is welcomed!
Thank you sir!!
The natural humor in your teaching is what makes your videos interesting. Yet there is still very valuable information.
This video deserves more views for the comedy and the info lol
Thanks Heath! 🙏
Great tips on how to paddle.
Thank you, glad you liked it
YES spend money on the paddle! More important for kayak fishing than a $300 rod reel combo any day.
So true ...
Thanks Headwaters. 👊🏻

Chad Hoover is comedy gold. He’s got you laughing while teaching you.
That's partly due to his prior Navy career. Navy sailors need that to learn crap. The best instructors develop that humor.
I am almost in tears watching this. Should be a fishing comedian haha
The Best kayak fishing engineer
Thanks
Chad you look great and it makes Kristie happy . I started kayak fishing two years ago after seeing your videos and I followed the advice you gave about buying the best paddle that I could afford and I have not looked back. Best advice I have gotten since I started, keep up the good work. All the best to you and your family.
Just got into Kayaking awesome info Chad and you are a funny guy.
Thank you Lycan247
Thanks for the information, I’m just getting started so I appreciate it. The shirt and shoes matching are good but definitely not a must.

Chad that! Was friggin funny... lol. I am beginning to like your humor.... And thank you for the VLOG paddling very good stuff...
Appreciate the honesty! 'If you can't get line your knuckles with the blade" comment had me on the floor! Honesty establishes trust!
Chad, great video. I always like the humor. As far as clothes, just say thank you to the nice lady.

Great video! This answered all my questions about what to look for in a paddle and why the more expensive ones are worth the money.
Christie is doing a great job keep it up.

Awesome video! The pescador 100 looks like the setup i need. Ill be getting one for sure.
This video has convinced me that I need a pedal kayak. =)
So, I’ve glued my paddle to my hand. I’m paddling great, but now I’m having trouble fishing with the paddle stuck to me. 🤔🤔🤔
Thanks, Chad. I am looking forward to that video where you talk about pedaling. I'm feeling the pressure to put the pedal drive on my Flint. I think I'm just fine with a paddle, though.
Good info. The old adage of standing one up and getting your fi gertips over the top edge of the paddle is obsolete?
I like to match colors on most things. It looks good.
One of your best videos thank you
Hey Chad, what kind of kayaks are in the background?
I subscribed because of the cereal eating demonstration. Lol
Great info! I will definitely be implementing the paddle rudder technique.
As for your question about attire, I think if Christy is picking the outfit, you're probably good to go. Lol

I just bought the BB carbon fiber with the wood , paid 350. My wife says it changed her entire day on water. Looks like I better grab one myself

Thanks brother! 👊🏻
I see your paddle offset in your videos. Wondered the correct position. Hight of person? width of kayak? Wind? What would be start to extreme position. Great video.
Great info chad. That yeti behind you looks kinda like a water heater tank lol
Yes Chad, Kristie is right.....you are not wrong for matching at all!!!!!
Great video!! What do you do if you buy too long of a paddle?
Great info as usual. It depends on the shirt would you wear salmon colored shoes with a salmon colored shirt?
Chad, I've got a follow up question. Could you explain how to choose the best length of paddle? I want to buy a new "forever" paddle, but I'm concerned about getting the correct length. I have a Jackson Big Rig and a Nucanoe F12. Both are very wide kayaks.
Tell me more about this pinochle?
This video is gold!!!
Please, be sure to buy the best performing paddle you can afford from the start. I purchased a Werner paddle and was absolutely shocked at the $400 dollar price tag. However, when I tested other, heavier paddles made of weaker material and then tested my Werner, the benefits were over the top noticeable. Yes it is ok to match your shoes to your shirt
(My girlfriend and my mom and my grandma from both sides of my family each have a gun to my head)
I just can't stop staring at those awesome bonafide kayaks in the background. Wish I could afford one of those.
Tuscanygp I’ve been Saving for a year now to buy one, got to make it a goal if you really want it.

Phil Tarbox the Angler Ace Plus

Great video as always thanks for the great information
Good vid. Funny. Hey, your hat matches your pants as well. Good stuff.
Killer info!! And not sure if it's acceptable but it happened to me as well?😊
If they match my other clothes it’s purely coincidence.
paddle is your prop, you are the motor. mismatch your body strength to your paddle and you will have the same result.

Learning proper techniques early in anyone's kayak experiences will keep you paddling for the long term. Chad it has nothing to do with #MetroSexual #RealMenRealStyle we always have to look good at everything we do #KayakFishing as well.
If the shoes and shirt match by accident all good but if it's deliberate you could have an issue...lol...great vid. Love the sarcasm.
I use “Grip and slip” but love glue and grease...better visual. I teach CPR....Catch, Pull, Release for the stroke.
