𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁: The Heller Approach is a one of a kind Non-Method acting technique suitable for all levels, from the beginner looking for an effective approach to start an acting career to the seasoned professional actor who finds acting no longer enjoyable, complex, mentally draining, and confusing. The Heller Approach Acting Studio, located in Hollywood, CA, founded by an actor, director, and acting teacher, Brad Heller, is currently rated as one of the top acting schools in Los Angeles. We teach students at our theater in Hollywood and also on Zoom to students all over the globe. The Heller Approach provides you a simple structure and a fun way to learn acting, completely effective, without needing to indulge in “The Method” type personal experiences that can be extremely exhausting and traumatic. Furthermore, this acting technique will help you learn how to analyze a scene and create the most believable, entertaining characters in a way that is conducive to the fast-paced entertainment industry.
The Heller Approach is an acting technique taught exclusively by Brad Heller, who coached actors for 5 years at UCLA before opening his own studio in 1995. Heller's teachings are based on the works of his former teacher and mentor, Don Richardson, an original member of the legendary Group Theatre, which was the nucleus of acting in the United States. Richardson’s fellow students were Sanford Meisner, Stella Adler, Lee Strasberg, and Uta Hagen. Don was one of the students from the Group Theatre who said, "The Method is NOT what acting is about.” Don's acting technique became a rescue for Brad Heller because despite having a degree in theater from one of the world’s finest theater programs, Boston University School of Theater Arts, and trying multiple acting techniques, Brad could not enjoy the process of acting. Combining Don Richardson’s acting technique with the knowledge of anxiety from Dr. Eda Gorbis, as well lessons from his mentor Academy Award winner Seth Winston, and more, the Heller Approach has become trusted by thousands of students globally.

...having an understanding of how emotions and thoughts impact people...has in my personal experience helped me tremendously..it has actually made it very clear to me why and how positive thinking can actually make a situation worst...example...If I have to tell myself to be nice...you can bet my emotion is far far away from anything nice...otherwise, why would I or anyone have to tell themselves that?...Amazing combinations of emotion and objectives...create human behavior...

Great question....I feel I could answer this better in a video lesson rather than a lengthy post. Stay tuned and we will cover that soon! Thanks for posting Lea and thanks for the excellent lesson idea. All the best to you!

So helpful! It definitely is much easier once you create the emotion and objective for your character, the natural behaviour of the character sometimes just starts to shine through, thank you!

I made them laugh at the interviews and at the audition, not intentionally but just by my personality at interview, and letting fly at audition. It was exactly what they were looking for apparently, and they both told me straight away that I had the part, they were more excited than I was. It looked like they had finally found what they were looking for.Much of what is coming is based on my character, and I have never done TV before so everything is amazing to me right now. My agent asked what hell I did to land this, and I just told her, it was the right place at the right time. Try for as many auditions as you can and show up happy and get into the character they want. It's totally crazy that a guy who's only ever been on stage, is now working a main role in a science fiction TV series. Life is very strange.

Thank you so much, Heller! I'm a writer professionally but have aims of directing and have been trying to learn how to relate to actors so that they can fully realize their performance and characters. Your videos have taught me so much in so little time! Thank you again.

I dream one day of becoming an actor. I love the prospect of entertaining people and even more so making them laugh. I haven't had any lessons in my entire life so your videos are a great start! I'm lucky to have not been taught "The Method" beforehand, for now I can enjoy acting the fullest! Thank you for your help!

How do you decide on the emotion to feel and use as part of the breathing exercise? How do you choose when the scene includes various emotions that change throughout?
I love your videos, btw! They’ve been incredibly helpful for me. I also love watching you direct/coach your students. It’s nice seeing all your theories put to action and applied to scene work.

One of the most dificult things, for me, to do is to build a character. How do you start building a character?

I definitely do not want to revisit my traumas every time I want to play a negative emotion. I can't do that, but that idea gives me a serious "ewww" moment thinking about Monroe and Ledger. I do NOT wanna do method acting. Thanks for being here on YT, you might have saved my life. LOL

I love all of your videos! i wanna ask one quick question though.
when i tell people that i want to be an actress, they in return tell me that i couldn't because acting is such a tough business and that i'll never get anywhere, that i should think of becoming something more reliable that earns lots of money
what do you say to those people?
because since i'm still quite young whenever i say well i want to become an actress because i love it and i wanna get better at it they never take me seriously!
