Aaron Pryor vs Alexis Arguello I (Highlights)

  • Pryor had signed to face Sugar Ray Leonard in the fall of 1982 for the Undisputed World Welterweight Championship, but Leonard suffered a detached retina and retired, paving the way for Pryor vs. Arguello.
Arguello was attempting become the first boxer to win world titles in four weight divisions.
    Arguello was a 12-5 favorite.
Pryor's purse was $1.6 million, while Arguello's was $1.5 million.
Arguello suffered a cut over his left eye in round six.
After the fight, there was controversy over a water bottle used by Pryor's trainer, Panama Lewis, between rounds 13 and 14. Microphones caught Lewis telling cutman Artie Curley, "Give me the other bottle, the one I mixed." It seemed to revive Pryor. Coming out quickly for the 14th round, Pryor landed a barrage of unanswered blows before the referee stopped the fight. Many speculated that there was something illegal in the bottle, but nobody checked the contents and the Miami Boxing Commission failed to administer post-fight urine tests to the boxers. Lewis and Pryor steadfastly denied that there was anything illegal in the bottle. Curley said the bottle contained peppermint schnapps to settle Pryor's upset stomach. In the 2008 documentary Assault in the Ring, former Lewis-trained boxer Luis Resto revealed that Lewis would break apart antihistamine pills and pour the medicine into his water, giving him greater lung capacity in the later rounds of a fight.
Named "Fight of the Decade" by The Ring in 1990.
Named the 8th greatest title fight of all-time by The Ring in 1996.

Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use
    Fair use
Additionally, the fair use defense to copyright infringement was codified for the first time in section 107 of the 1976 Act. Fair use was not a novel proposition in 1976, however, as federal courts had been using a common law form of the doctrine since the 1840s (an English version of fair use appeared much earlier). The Act codified this common law doctrine with little modification. Under section 107, the fair use of a copyrighted work is not copyright infringement, even if such use technically violates section 106. While fair use explicitly applies to use of copyrighted work for criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, or research purposes, the defense is not limited to these areas. The Act gives four factors to be considered to determine whether a particular use is a fair use: the purpose and character of the use (commercial or educational, transformative or reproductive); the nature of the copyrighted work (fictional or factual, the degree of creativity); the amount and substantiality of the portion of the original work used; and the effect of the use upon the market (or potential market) for the original work.

God the talent pool was deep in boxing in those days. I used to loved to watch Arguello. He was such a mechanic... which is not to say he was mechanical. He was just such a clinical fighter. If one ever wants to learn how to deliver a right-hand.... study him.

My older brother squared off against Mike Tyson when they were both locked up in Plainfield. Some guards were paid off I guess so nobody would interrupt the prisonyard bout. My brother was 20 lbs lighter than 27-year-old Mike Tyson; but he's 6'3", almost 6'4" and had a considerable reach advantage, which he used on me growing up, keeping me an armslength away, his left palm on my forehead, his right hand scoring shots while I did nothing more than generate a strong breeze with my two arms making like windmills in pursuit of that asshole. Anyway, I suspect he did the same to Tyson, because Tyson refused to talk about the fight or all the money fellow prisoners lost betting on the former champ. My brother, who claims the beef originated when my brother accused Tyson of stealing his collection of Bernstein Bears books, always dismissed the fight as a mundane task unworthy of recounting, let alone praise and glory. "Buster Douglas showed the world how easy it is to beat that dude; he deserves credit for whooping Mike's ass; I just followed his blueprint and got my shit back," he says.
"Those are good books, the Bernstein Bears. "
      Small world, I guess.

It's a shame that Pryor cheated...we'll never know who would have won. Ranks up there with Holmes-Norton, Ali Frazier I and III in great fights of that time. One thing I never noticed till watching now, nobody talks about Pryor's defensive skills. In the middle of all his punch-throwing, he was ducking Arguello's punches really well. Never saw Arguello miss that many punches. Two great, great fighters. I think in the end, it was Arguello moving up so many weight classes that beating a fighter of Pryor's caliber was just impossible.

  • @dalemilnes1554
    @dalemilnes1554 7 місяців тому

I watched this live on tv. Pryor was coked up. And the guy in Pryor's corner, Panama Lewis, was reviving him with some from a little brown bottle between rounds. Lewis was later banned from boxing for removing padding from his fighters gloves. The other guy suffered permanent damage and couldn't fight anymore. In the above fight Arquello hit him walking into a punch that would hurt a light heavyweight and Pryor walked through it. That was drugs. Then the ref let Pryor wail on Arguello after he was defenseless from punches and Pryor almost killed Arquello. Arquello was never the same.

Jorge, my friend, Sanchez was killed before the match between him and Arguello could be made - Alexis ducked nobody. And according to Rubin Castillo, who fought both Sanchez and Arguello, Arguello hit 5x harder than Sanchez and if you need a better idea of who would have won between Sanchez and Arguello just look at Sanchez vs Patrick Ford. Ford, who was built like Arguello, but not as good, went life and death with Sanchez. As for Sugar Ray Leonard and Pryor, people like you keep saying Leonard ducked Pryor - it's not true! There was no opportunity for the fight to happen! November 1979 Leonard wins title from Benetiz, June of 1980,Leonard fights Duran for $10 million, November of 1980 rematch vs Duran, by this point Pryor isn't a household name and Sugar Ray is preping for $10 million against Hearns in September of 1981.After that he had a mandatory defense of his title, then discovered his torn retina.

On that night, Pryor was the only man alive that could beat Alexis in their weight class. For Aaron to survive that right hand cross in the 14th round was and still is the most amazing thing I have witnessed in all my years of watching championship boxing.
That was a text book right cross, right on the button snapping Aaron's head back violently. In theory that head snap would knock out or at least knocked down 99.9 percent of the population.
Still watching it decades later after watching it live still had me gasp out loud in Pryor's resilience to not even being staggered....that alone would have taken any remaining will Alexis still had in him to win...

Possibly the best fight of the eighties, shame about the bottle though.

Two of the greatest fights ever! Both boxers were legends especially the classy Alexis Arguello.

Mixed bottle or not, Alexis Arguello was NOT gonna win this fight. He hit Pryor with everything he had before the "bottle" and still couldn't get him out of there. The "bottle" was unfortunate because Pryor didn't need it.

Trainer asks for the bottle he mixed, Pryor takes a big drink and comes out like a madman, that stinks of performance enhancing drugs, the world hates a cheat.
