    I love it.
    Sometimes it is necessary to keep such instruments alive for the sake of historical importance, and the fact that it plays nicely is a cherry on the top

    Martin Guitar Company began in 1833. That's a remarkable guitar to exist for 160 years or so.
    A very fine and respectful repair job. Thank you for sharing with us. You are a true craftsman.

    Nice job Robbie. I did a restoration on one that was almost just like it. We think it's an 1860. It had the same fan brace pattern with the one cross tone bar however it does NOT have the finger braces. Also the one I restored has the Ice cream cone heel. I think they were experimenting a lot back then. I put Saverez nylon strings on it and it absolutely sounds great. Those are the original Jerome tuners and they are definitely Ivory knobs.
    BTW nice playing too!

    The use of a Tailpiece allowed these Guitars to be converted to Steel strings as it relieves alot of tension.

    2:59 These old 1860 Martin Acoustic Guitars were designed for Gut Strings (nowadays Nylon) cause they were very lightly built.

    • @ollimoore
      @ollimoore Рік тому +1

      Every Martin was Gut strung in 1860, regardless of bracing pattern. The unsuitability of this guitar for steel strings has little to do with the positions of the braces and a whole lot to do with their dimensions, as well as the soundboard thickness. X bracing was initially developed for gut strings, and those guitars shouldn’t be fitted with steel strings either.

    • @RockStarOscarStern634
      @RockStarOscarStern634 Рік тому +1

      @@ollimoore Some X Braced Guitars were strong enough that they could be easily converted to Steel strings w/ Silk & Steel strings. Thomastik makes Special Steel strings w/ the same tension as Gut (or Nylon Strings), their Rope Core Classic S Series.

    • @RockStarOscarStern634
      @RockStarOscarStern634 Рік тому +1

      @@ollimoore That tells me that these were very lightly built. However some people converted them for Steel strings by adding a tailpiece.
