i laughed so hard at the star wars thing. you're such a cool guy. also i really love these videos considering im studying to be an english teacher in korea
Loved watching this. At first, I thought that a 40 minute video would drag on forever, but the game was fun and before I knew it, the video was done. I am sure that the kids enjoyed it too. Great Bunch of kids! Thanks for Sharing.
1:26 Teacher: "You guys wanna watch a movie?" Students: "Yes!" Red Shirt Student: "Yeah, Telephone!" Kid behind: "Stop, no no, it's not one of those..."
I literally just did this class today! The same exact section but a different game using the cards from the back of the book. Nice to see some parallels in teaching!
Good job ... thanks for sharing. I'm impressed that the student follow the conversation so well and largely seem to be pretty consistent with each other.
+Glenn Laycock I tend to use similar phrases and instructions each class so they are used to it now. They can follow. Also, instructions on coming to order are all learned behaviors after working with them for a couple years now.
First off,let me say no one else that does teaching abroad, shows the actual classroom, that is awesome! It looks pretty cool, but I can imagine how it would make for a very long day!! Well done sir!
Thank you for sharing this video. As a mom & grandma who homeschools, I love to see how children learn. I bet the kids like having you as their teacher.
Great class Tom, thanks for showing the lesson. The girl on the right hand side with the green coat was so into that game, even just from her you can tell they really enjoy your teaching
Awww those kids are cute!! I was offered to work as an English tutor to Korean kids in Seoul. I somehow regret that I didn't take the opportunity bec. I couldn't leave my full-time job at that time. Thanks for sharing this vid.
Always good to see how other teachers run their classes. Thanks Tom 😀 Me and my students just started their summer break here in Australia! Back to school at the end of January!!!
Your class flows very much like my classes. Same material too. I really found it funny how you called the "song" session, norebang haha. I'll have to use that one. Thanks for posting this!
+Edward Kwak I think this was the lesson throughout many schools in Korea. I try to keep it lively and interesting as much as possible. More effort, but worth it overall.
it was cool to watch you in actual class interaction. I was so inspired. I'm looking forward to coming to Korea this year. I hope to be selected. This gives me inspiration. You do a fabulous job on your videos that I've seen thusly.
Really enjoyed seeing the class and the techniques you use. So interesting. I've used a similar game to teach Bible facts in a vacation bible school setting. Lots of fun (6th graders). Talk about energy! Wow.
Heading to Daegu in the Spring with EPIK. It'll be my first ESL experience, so it's really cool to see what an actual lesson might look like! Thanks for sharing!!! Does the dress code vary from school to school? I had in mind it was a trousers and collared shirt kind of position, but I'm guessing jeans and a hoodie are ok (at least in some schools)...
+Mike Kearns it depends I guess. Just dress as everyone else does. In public schools it's a bit casual, but just see how they dress when you get there.
Wow thank you for uploading this! Very interesting. I am a college student and am have been considering teaching english in Korea. I am nervous of going somewhere that I do not know anyone though....
bryn eigl from what I read before, no they don't speak Korean at all. They only speak English to get them used to English and comfortable speaking it. I seen a lot of teachers who don't even know Korean.
even if he did, the best way to learn english is constantly listening to it. Make sense that he wont speak a word in korean so they can get more comfortable with the language.
My understanding is it literally depends on his visa. E2 holders are not allowed to speak any Korean while teaching. They can only teach in English. I might be mistaken, but that was the information my recruiter gave me. EPIK and hagwon teachers almost always have an E2 visa.
Red dragon diaries: Okay that makes sense, if i hadn't stopped it should of taken me about 4 years in total to get to the black belt level when considering the time it took me to get to the green belt. I'm relieved in a way because i don't feel like the few levels i have were simply given to me simply because i was older. I remember working awfully hard to get even to green. I appreciate your input once more red dragon diaries. Merry christmas and happy new year! Ian
+mike lrourkes Every club will run differently, but the accepted international guidelines put time in grade somewhere around 3-4 years for adult shodan. I think it's unfair for someone who is a green belt having to play someone who has been a green belt for 4 years. Unfortunately it's not your fault and you should probably be a different rank. For those that do it purposely, it's called sandbagging and that's why judo has a curriculum in place. I hope you keep training though. So for example, if you walk into a tourny and beat 4 or 5 black belts, you'll be promoted to black belt on the spot. It's not so much a compliment as much as it is a mechanism to keep things fair. Merry Christmas to you too!
Red dragon diaries: The club i trained at is run by the highest ranking sensei in canada, sensei nakamura. That's why i value his teachings so much which is why i asked you about all this, especially you getting your black belt in korea. Thanks again red dragon diaries.
He is quiet amazing, that's also why i wanna go back to continue learning judo, hopefully from him. His not as present as he used to be and for the last couples of year Nicolas gill whom he coached for his whole carreer has been involved full time.

Great technique Thomas. Your students show a lot of respect and also enjoy themselves. Having taught English in Japan for about 5 yrs, I know how challenging it can be. How many classes do you teach a day ?
I see why you set the camera on that side. Those six are your problem area. Though I think I know why. Would I be right in my assumption that they are your strongest English speakers as well? They think or they might actually know more than what they are being taught. This leads to them acting bored or out. However, the class seems to be tamed overall. Jeopardy or Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with a twist would be nice additions to that curriculum. These games make children think and understand what they are actually saying by being able to relate it back to a known source.
+tame112blood you're spot on with the one right in front of the camera. He's very strong with English, so he can be a renegade sometimes. That's not why I put the camera there, but it did help! Yes, those are great activities too. I agree, any game where they need to think and speak are probably best
I always yell EVERYONE! in korean and lean against the board or table, and they respond naturally NEEEH! it works much better than good morning. and then they get going. my classroom is three times as big as yours and I have middle school students. Imagine me yelling across the room lol. I got a mic a month into teaching and it saved my ass
+MusingsofaJay♡ middle school is definitely tougher I think. My first school was middle school girls and the classes were larger as was the room. I think my life would be easier now if I went back - knowing what I know now
MissEvaSimone wow thanks my friend wants to go and I was trying so hard to find somewhere that takes you without a degree she has completed two years of her degrees tho so it's better than nothing right ! What's the difference between epik and talk tho is it the same company ?
Hi, this is years late but could you please answer I'd love you for it! Is it possible to make a career out of teaching english in korea with a regular bachelors and not a masters of english or something. And can you stay longer than 1 year, can you extend the contract or actually make it more of a career? Does it become easier to come back once you've done it once? Is this good long term, I am 27 would this be a good career path into your mid to late 30s? I currently work as a customer service rep at sunlife in canada and I only make around 38,000. The cost of living in Canada is quite high which is worth noting. I've heard Korea has made cuts to funding english teachers and its not as good as it once was, is this true? Thank you!
Thank you very much for this.. I subscribed. I also want to teach to travel around Asia starting with Korea. I understand most likely I will be covered, but what of my wife and son ? Can my family come and does them being with me effect my pay or anything ? Btw, is my ticket to Korea possibly payed for ? If so, what about my family ?
It looks about like more than half a century ago when I was in grade school: how the kids behave when a substitute (or other non-regular) teacher is in charge.

If you say no you don't want to watch a movie then you clean. None of those kids want to clean lol. These kids get to learn English while they are still in school and here in America we don't get to learn spanish or Korean or any other language until high school when we have to learn spanish.
If he teaches in a public school then it's probably their homeroom teacher. Foreign English teachers are considered "guest" teachers. I couldn't handle someone else in my classroom all the time. At least not someone who was considered to have more authority than me.
red dragon diaries: I need to ask you a question about the traditional judo ranking system. I began judo in my twenties and some guy told me that, when you begin judo later in life you are ranked with only solid color such the usual white, yellow, orange ect... He goes on to say that when beginning judo as a child, you are given a different ranking system. Which that you begin with white to move onto half white and a half yellow belt, yellow, half yellow half orange and so on...... I've never seen it nor heard about this ranking system. +mike lrourkes There are junior rankings available as well. Up to junior black. Remember that in judo, a black belt signifies that you've met the requirements of the curriculum which includes knowledge of the the terminology, ability to demonstrate them, kata, and a certain degree of time in grade. Not all black belts are of the same ability, but it signifies the individual met the requirements.

Red Dragon Diaries do you need to be fluent in Korean to be an ESL teacher in Korea? (or Japan etc...)
I wish I had a teacher as handsome and knowledgeable as you are when I was young.
I will be doing this myself one day, and it's great to see your style and techniques. Thanks for the vid

Thank you for this, really interesting and fun to watch!
Do you also teach higher graders(?)/ older kids? I'd like to see the difference.
+KamiJuno I teach 3-6. I may try to film those at some point too
does he not speak korean to them at all? They're all so good!
Fintan Rawsthorne this is what I'm also wondering... does the ESL teacher even need Korean skills to be a "guest" teacher?
