- Honda CB750 Side Cover Repair and painting! Pati takes a HUGE leap forward and now looks very complete as I work to repair and paint side covers to mount on the bike. This video is not intended to be a how to but rather just me thinking through the task at hand and coming up with solutions that best fit this project. There will of course be a lot of different ways to tackle this job so here is simply how I did it.
To repair the covers I first sanded them down and ended with a 120g finish near the repair area. I then cleaned everything before using tape to hold everything in the correct position. From there I used superglue to get the pieces set up. On the backside I used fiberglass that I already had to repair the cracks. I used at least 5 different small pieces for cover and feel it is a strong repair. Once set up I painted them with SEM primer, a custom mixed paint, and Spray max 2k clear before doing a polish for final finish.
With the covers repaired I finished the job with some early badges I also sourced used to fit the look I'm after. The early badges look better to me so it was a fun detail to go after. Once mounted the bike looks so much more complete than it did before and I am super happy with the results! Stay tuned for lots more CB750 content as I continually work to improve this bike.

Been watching since the beginning of this project and continue to be impressed with your abilities. You don't ever have to apologize for your talent, sorry that some of your so-called fans are making you feel it's needed. I am lucky enough to be the present custodial of a 76 CB750 all original including the 4-piece exhaust. I feel your love for these bikes.
Well thank you! It just gets frustrating that everyone seems to know better and must let me know how poorly I am doing when they have the power of hindsight and apparently limitless budget, tools, time, ect.

Those covers came out pretty dam good for rattle can paint. I have an old helmet I’d like to try using that type of paint. Not sure if I ever heard of a paint store that will color match rattle can paint. I’ll have to look into it. Keep up the good work on that 750.

Agreed! I ride this daily now and love the feeling knowing that it was left for dead in a barn not long ago
for the second cover, generally you will want to drill a hole at the end of the crack. That will relive the pressure on the crack and not make it want to spider out any more. Sometimes you can get away without having to do it but as a general rule of thumb its something that you will want to do most of the time.
Good to know and I should have thought of that! I use the same approach on aluminum so that makes total sense
@@BrickHouseBuilds If I remember correctly, Honda tended to paint directly onto the plastic or fibreglass, so the base will generally be light. If you use black or dark grey primer, you will knock the top coat down several shades, meaning it’s not possible to get a match.
So, if you’re using primer, maybe a white or light grey would be better. And as always, the underside of the tank is the best place to find paint in original condition for a colour reference.
Finally, if you put some petroleum gel on the side panel rubber mounting bungs, it will take less effort to pull them off, and put less strain on the thing going forward.

You have inspired me to leave some imperfections on my projects. My bike is a 42 year old bike.....leave some patina. Let her look her age a bit...with a tasteful haircut and makeup. 😉
I think its WAY more cost effective to make them look cleaned up and loved than perfect and new....

Good to know these side covers are fixable. Paint looks great. I think Honda did a silver base coat then covered it with the blue...that's what gave it the metallic look.
I bet thats 100% accurate. The black primer definitely gave a darker shade as well but I claim to be no expert when it comes to paint. I'm happy with my results though.

@@rolfbley1373 Thank you. I had actually forgotten how Honda did it. Indeed I’ve only just commented that maybe they painted bare plastic. But you reminded me of what I learned in maybe 1976? And it makes perfect sense, both from an economic and an aesthetic point of view. It was novel back then. But ‘old school’ now!!

You probably already know this but if you want super glue to dry instantly you apply it and then dump on some baking soda. It will dry instantly to the touch within like one second and it's a really hard secure connection. I've used it on my saddlebags for my 1982 Honda Goldwing and it works perfect. Then you don't even have to mix any fiberglass resin and fiberglass sheet. You probably already knew that already anyway. Like your videos keep it up

Hello BJ, I know you said you weren’t experienced at the painting side of things, however I think you achieved a pretty good job there. And like anything else you will learn as you go which is the best way. The panels looked great.
Honda used a candy style paint a lot back then so I guess looking at it the silver base coat, then candy blue lastly the lacquer coat. You can usually tell when flatting the old paint the top coat appears white when the lacquer is rubbed down. ( l still have a rusty tin of Regal blue candy from the seventies in my shed!) painted my 250 K4 in around 1978.
Matching candy can actually be easier in some respects as the colour coat can be thinned and built slowly to gain the desired depth of colour. You can even rub a little away here and there to give an aged appearance. Well I think I’ve rattled on a bit!

Great job, BJ! You have knocked the ball right out of the park with those two side covers. Yes, they are not perfect, but they would look odd if they were, unless you were to fully strip the bike down and restore it, which would take away its survivor status. Keep up the good work! 👏👏👏

I think the covers look great. Nice job. I glued the emblem and jewel on my K6 covers (large form emblem) with hot glue and it has worked out great.

Dude, those both look great. It's a pleasure to learn along with you on the multiple aspects of these machines. I did a facelift of an '83 KZ Ltd in the late 2000s. The thing had been laid down and rear ended, but ran like a sewing machine. I gave it a few ebay parts, paint, pipes, drag bars and cafe fairing and rode it like I stole it! There's just no match for that sense of accomplishment I felt with every twist of the throttle. I wanna restore a '79 KZ1000 next, and every one of these vids just feeds that fire! Knees to the breeze, brother!

Great Repair Work. I am painting my secondary Tank for the XL250. Electrolysis, Sandblasted, 2 part Primer. Fiber glass filler on small dents, Another coat of primer and Base Coat Deep Purple Metallic. Not done yet.
I love watchin. Whish I could find a bike like the 750 honda. I had one new in 77. I road it to work every day . I loved it.
Such great bikes, been riding this one daily!
Personally, I love the relaxed nature of this build, there will be times and places for more in depth builds all too soon, enjoy this one.

To avoid the line from where the crack was using red lead filler followed by primer would have totally covered it. You did a great job and the final result was amazing.
A fitting result based on the age and condition of the bike in my opinion - great job my friend!

You did fine in repairing those side covers I need one have it the fastners are missing can't find new ones would not buy them anyway.

Agreed. Most of my projects are striving for perfection and its stressful. This entire bike is the antithesis of that and so fun
I'm loving the repair not replace ethos. Also, just respecting the age. It's refreshing. I know there are people now who think patina is a kind of paint. Sigh. Age is just what it is. And in any case it is not actually decay or - groan - rust. There's another word for that. It's called neglect.
There's another comment on looking under the tank for the closest to factory colour. But that's missing the point of working with the colour the time has created: sun, rain and other elements.
If echo the thoughts about defaulting to a grey primer though, using a match the way you did to blend with your real paint. Black means darker, white means lighter, at least without lathering on a ton of top coat.
Oh and kudos for doing what you want with your bike. That's just great too.
Thank you and very much agreed. There is patina which shows character/stories/history and then there is neglect which is not what I'm after. Using black primer was actually kind of a dumb move on my part and it didn't cross my mind until I put color on it. There are bigger things in my life to worry about currently and I'm keeping this one fun.

My biggest enjoyment of your project is that I learned something about applying fiberglass. One of the body panels on my BMW has a slight crack in the paint. Project for this summer will be to lay some fiberglass on the back side to stiffen it up.

That is a very sweet rear rack. I like the bike. Sounds nice, probably pretty pleasant to cruise around on, good stuff.
Its the best! The rack is a total must have and the bike is very fun daily
@@BrickHouseBuilds Yeah, I need to look into that, backpacks work, but I get sick of wearing one. I'll have to poke about, get a rack and maybe a top box.
Biggest recommendation I could offer is don't add too many layers of glass at 1 time.
1st remove damaged or delaminated material.
Then try adding about 2 layers at a time and allow 24 hours to setup before sanding.
After initial layers on the back, grinding the crack out and filling in with a mix of resin and chopped glass, then add mat over the top of the fill, and roll it down to remove air bubbles.
This should give a very solid long-lasting repair.
You put a lot of time on those covers. Nice job. Nice bike.

I detail bikes get scratchs out with a Rotary machine polisher..
You can use Whiteshark fk1000p wax on the rims as well it is a wax sealant, will last over winter.
Great job. I have found that ABS cement, the black stuff for black sewer pipes, make a great resin for this type of repair. It sticks to the plastic better than epoxy. I used to fix the old Vetter fairings and epoxy would stress break away from the plastic at the edge of the repair but ABS cement stayed put seemingly forever.
May have to look into that for the next similar repair.

You can make the cement yourself with some acetone and ABS-plastic, LEGO type of plastic i excellent.. Cut the plastic in small pieces and put them in a jar and pour a bit of acetone in the jar. Not a lot, only just enough to make a paste to smear over the cracks. It’s important to chamfer the grooves in the cover the way you did, so the homemade glue can get a groove to stick to.

Gotta get yourself an inexpensive rig for welding plastics! It's stupid easy to do. Reasonably simple to do well with a bit of practice. They work great. Much like tig welding.
