The bass is harmonizing with the high vocal harmony climb down (which Paul is actually singing too). It's one of the simplest parts of this whole bass line but yeah, it gives me shivers. It's funny, I used to worship this song for the harmony leads - and I still do - but nowadays I focus on the bass. It's virtuosic, and a sort-of Beatlefied James Jamerson part.
Thanks! There’s one time he doesn’t go up to the high E and the end of the phrase and I did. Nowadays I transcribe every bassline as you prevent those kinds of simple mistakes from occurring
@@neilcandeloramusic ya but i meant like the main part of the bassline if yk what i mean? Im not really a bass player so sorry if i get things wrong. P.S. what song are you guys planning to do next?
Paul is/ was one of the most amazing, song oriented bass players ever. He gets just a little overlooked, because the songs alone are so great; the vocals. And there are plenty Alembic flashy virtuosos out there. But he is pretty much un paralleled. No one plays like he did. edit - I see Sting's name over there on the right. He may come close because he also had that rubbery sound, and wrote great pop songs. But Sting, I think stayed more in patterns and riffs.
Another thing with Paul’s bass playing is that almost no verse has the same bass line in a song, he’ll change the way he plays every verse in a song, sometimes he adds a passing note or sometimes he changes up the line, it’s so creative and that’s why is kinda difficult to perfectly play Paul’s bass lines because it changes throughout the song.
This is also one of his more conventionally organized lines. This still has plenty of variety, but he keeps it tight. On a lot of them, he's almost ridiculously loose, not in terms of rhythm, but in terms of playing a bunch of oddball stuff that seems to come into his head w/ oddball slides, octaves, chromatic lines, etc.
Great job! One of my favourites off of Revolver. Our Beatle bass player has a hard time getting use to the pickup cover and playing with a pick after playing with his fingers and a Jazz for so long.

I notice you got the exact 4/001 bass a Paul used, I love seeing the attetion to detail, I notice Ardy uses a similar 400/1 bass but with the trapazoid fretboard
Running the bass through a big amp helps a lot. Two microphones on the bass, one is a kick drum mic and it only captures the low end woof-y sounds while the other is more standard. There's a video on this channel where you can see our miking setup.
Ive changed strings as we progressed through doing videos. In this specific video I was using labellas, but now I’ve landed on thomastik strings, heard about them being everyone’s favorite for years and now they are my favorite too.
Great stuff . .I am curious what kind of pick you are using . . rubber? felt? plain 'ol. guitar pick? I just got a Ric 4003 and love it. Thanks for the inspiration.
Great tone! Gotta ask. Did you use the bridge or neck-pickup? And how much did you roll back the tone-control? Wanna try your settings on my old Rickenbacker 4001.
Neck pickup - tone all the way off. I feel like tone control is either off or on with most guitars. I and continued rolling treble off with every stage of this- the amp had all treble off and I think I ended up cutting everything above 1k in logic too.
Very nice playing man well done, how do you get an isolated bass track I’d love to get an isolated piano track for Let It Be and The Long And Winding Road.
Thanks for the compliments! There is hardly any treble on Pauls bass on the record - we try to accurately mimic the sounds as much as we possibly can and don't try to "improve" on them in any way. A lot of Pauls incredible bass playing is very difficult to pick out pre 66 because of how little treble are on almost any of these tracks.
You're welcome. That's correct in that Paul's tone is, let's say, NOT on the "bright" side on the recordings then. Well, I'll have to wait until you cover John Entwistle to hear some "Roto Sound" bright bass tones. Again, great playing!
@@dlgeiling he always used the mutes he very rarely turned them down - its just the mix hides the bass well in the master version, the anthology version sounds less stereo imo

Great as always, Ably House! Two minor notes: if you check Paul’s bass line at ua-cam.com/video/vITfimCXcV8/v-deo.html, you’ll see that: A) there are no C#s in the first measures of the verse - those are actually Ds; and B) always after hitting that high E, there’s a G right before that G#-A-A#-B sequence (maybe it’s the open G string). Keep up the great work!! Regards from Brazil.
Oh yeah this is a major want to redo for me. I transcribe all the basslines now and have better isolated tracks now (for example the link you posted is far clearer that what i was listening to). Back then I was playing from memory every take, I admittedly hit one hi E i shouldn't have hit, but it was the closest take I got from memory so I kept it. I also wasn't really getting the staccato or legato notes, and what was a slide and what isn't etc. This take is FINE - its close but now I put far more painstaking efforts into the bassline recreation, and I've learned far more about the musicality of his basslines.
i guess it's alright to obsess over the smallest detail, but I'm certain that Paul didn't. He let go and had fun with the groove, each take unique from the others
