  • We have been looking for a fun plane on a budget. The Citabria seemed to fit the bill, so we started looking. We found one that looked good on paper, check out the video to see how it turned out (and maybe learn something about the process).

    Good to see you back on/in the air. I have been absent from watching U-Tube since I went back to work, but I retired again a couple of weeks ago. I know nothing about the paint issues, so no help for you here. I'd like to see some aerobatics if you get a plane that will do that. I've only been upside down a couple of times, on purpose, because back when I was flying, my instructor was a Jug pilot in WWII. He was bats&$@t crazy. At least I thought so, being new to flying. It was a blast though. I'd also like to see some hunting. I'm going on 11/05 and the season starts on the 7th. It's going to get down to 2 degrees tonight and I don't even live in the mountains. Gonna be a cold one this year going with the late season. Take care, Jim

    When I was 15 years old my dad and I had a 1965 Citabria. It had been landed long on skis and went into trees. Dad ran out of money when all the airframe repairs had been done. The left wing was bent up pretty bad outboard of the strut attach points, and the gear had been folded up into the fuse. I had been working on a farm 16 to 18 hrs a day 7 days a week. My dad had found a low time engine from another Citabria that had been in a hanger fire. With all that hard earned money I had in the bank I said let's go get that engine. I soloed that plane about 6 months later at 16 years old. I am now 60 years old......my dad passed in 2016. Those memories made in that plane are of the fondest of my entire life.

      Work is slow. Air traffic is slowly recovering, but it's going to take a LONG time to get back to 2019 levels. I think there is a lot of pent up travel demand, but cities (and countries) are going to have to start opening up before we see any real improvement.

    Great content and camera work. With the paint issue, $17.5k looks about right to me. I just don’t see $35k walking in the door. It would have been fun watching your son transition to a taildragger. It’s always fun to watch someone get out of a tricycle and step in to a taildragger, no matter who it is. I wish I had film of my first J3 takeoff in 1974. I can still hear the right side tire screeching as the instructor had his foot on the heel brake trying to keep us on the runway. He told me what to expect and I was still headed for the grass. He was laughing the whole time,. I was 19 and had just got my PPL. J3’s rented for $8 hr. at W96 back then. I’d pay to have film of my first takeoff. Thanks Jim.

    • @quinnjim
      @quinnjim  3 роки тому

      I had a J3 last year. You can see Quinn and Maddie fly it on my channel. The cool thing about the Citabria was that it had the metal wing conversion. I think it's pretty expensive to have that done. The interior was nice too. The engine was overhauled in the 1980's and had been through a lot. Prop strike, top overhaul, recent cylinder issues...It was just easier to pass and look for a better example. Thanks for stopping by and dropping a comment!

    Enjoying your videos. I'm looking for an airplane to buy, and it has been frustrating to travel across the country and pay for hotel rooms and rental cars only to find out the airplane wasn't as advertised. I might be interested in your 150.

    • @quinnjim
      @quinnjim  3 роки тому

      Buying and selling airplanes is always really frustrating. My old Cherokee was "sold" four times. Guys swore they were coming with a check, so I'd mark it as sold. Then they'd flake out. I went to Florida to buy an Archer that was supposed to be perfect. When I traveled down there, it looked like he painted the plane with a brush and nothing worked right. This is a solid little plane. Not cosmetically perfect, but great for economical flight.

    I’m quite certain that’s the airplane I was seriously inquiring about. I had a check in hand ready to go but since I needed to book an airline flight out there I asked several times for closeup pictures of the fabric before investing the time and money. All I got was a song and dance from the seller so I walked. Looks like someone bought it though.

    Hi Jim, truly enjoy your videos as well as the family stories. I am a student pilot almost at the opposite age end of Quinn's but excited to finally be doing this :). I have a quick question about the Stratux ADS-B you mentioned in the video. I was about to invest in a Sentry but this Stratux is $249 and appears to do just the same with great reviews. It does not have the CO monitor so how do you feel about that? I will hopefully need aviation insurance some day I will need to find Maddie to help with that! Thanks!

    • @quinnjim
      @quinnjim  3 роки тому

      I like the Stratux. It's a good idea to monitor CO due to the way we heat the cockpits of these planes though. You can always get the Stratux and then get the pads they sell that change color if they sense Carbon monoxide. My Stratux was giving me a "shadow" of my own plane initially. I had to go in to the settings to tell it which airplane was me and it fixed it. Let me know if you have that problem and I can tell you how to fix it!

    • @flyvxy
      @flyvxy 3 роки тому

      @@quinnjim Thanks Jim! I have the Statux now and tested it at home this weekend. No flying in Florida due to storm Eta until later in the week. On another note I wanted ask you about your 150. I've had this dream of getting my own AC and thought I could manage a Piper 180 or the like but it is increasingly looking like that's not going to happen so I have gone back to look at 150's. I've seen a few of your videos of course and you seem to have fun with it and while not a XC plane, you can get great training and seemingly go get less that $100 burgers in that economical machine. Wonder if you have any thought you can share and what to look for in a good 150. Thanks again! Vic

    • @quinnjim
      @quinnjim  3 роки тому

      @@flyvxy Hey Vic, You can pick up a cheap 150 from the 1960's, but I think it's worthwhile to spend a little more and get one from the 1970's. Some of the older ones have non-standard instrument panels and they are a little smaller. You probably want to avoid one that spent 30 years as a trainer. Those get pretty beat up. Make sure the engine is good. It would be great to find one with less than 1,000 hours on the engine that has been overhauled in the last 15-20 years (or less). If you are going to fly in airspace that requires ADSB, the plane will need to be equipped properly. It will cost you $2,000 to add the ADSB if the plane doesn't have it. Make sure the radios and transponder work. Those can get expensive. I've flown my 150 for about a year and have only done oil changes and a carb heat cable. There isn't much to break on them, so they are a great way to get in to aviation. That being said...if you buy one and then have to overhaul the engine...you just doubled your investment.

    • @quinnjim
      @quinnjim  3 роки тому

      Thanks! There are some modern ultralights that have gotten my attention. I like the metal ones that look like a narrow Cessna. The biggest downfall is that they only have one seat. That would get old pretty quick. I enjoy flying to share the experience with other people. I think an ultralight would be like a guy with a couple kids buying a 2 seat sports car. It's fun, but eventually it gets sold because you just don't have much use for it. If it gets you in to aviation, it would be a great way to start.

    • @quinnjim
      @quinnjim  3 роки тому +1

      It totally depends on the plane and the seller. I usually get good deals in the late fall/early winter. Good planes right now only last a few days. What's left is planes with questionable engines or histories. I think there's a "bubble" right now in small airplane prices. It will correct itself eventually. I negotiated a great deal on our Cirrus due to some abnormalities in the early logbook entries. I actually got the seller to come down $20K in price.

    That ceiling heater in the hangar - is that gas fired? I ask because out here there's also #2 oil-fired, too. Either is pricey out here. Sounds like you guys get alot cheaper fuel than we do.
    Sounds like aircraft engines are taking the same path as automotive engines these days. That's a little frightening. Quality is nosediving in the mechanical world. Has been for a couple decades, but in the last several years it has dive-bombed ... just like that seagull! Smart bird, lol.
    CONGRATULATIONS, Maddie!! That's great! I say, show it, John! The heck with the crybabies - they seem to be coming out of the woodwork EVERYWHERE these days ...
    Sucks about the paint on that one. I'm the same way regarding cars. Bad paint, I walk. For me as a mechanic, it's MUCH cheaper to throw an engine in than pay for body work and a paint job. If I ever get my pilot's license, I would have to get an A&P as well. It would pain me to have to pay someone to do engine work. With the way it sounds like the engines are going, that's going to be a must!

    I just opened a Google account for the first time so I could write a comment to you. Guessing that your budget is about $200K limits the Aircraft choices! I would go with the Cessna 206 because it is a good family airplane and because it is used in mission work around the world. The Quest Kodiac is out of your price range.. I would keep the "Blue Bunny" 152 as it seems to work for your family. (I do not fit in the plane) My idea here is to build time in the 152 and have lots of experience in the 206 so that your children can be mission pilots if they so choose. I would take all the pilots in the family and rent an aerobatic airplane: all pilots, in my opinion should understand flying upside down! Mission pilots should be vary good mechanics, no one is coming in a timely way to fix your airplane one hundred miles into the jungle, for one thing you might have the only airplane in a thousand miles! (I know of a Mission pilot/A&P that went out to rescue a 185 by cutting a foot or so off the end of one wing so it could fly out to be properly repaired. Landing was a bit tricky but he did it with no additional damage to the plane.) Maddie was talking about building an airplane, However you might start out a little less ambitiously and maybe fix up a 152 under the guidance of a A&P. This way one will not have an unfinished kit sitting around if the creative mechanical talent is not there. The 152 would also be worth more when done and if all goes well one can pick out the aircraft kit one wants to do. My comments come as a person interested in aviation but did not and do not have the money to fly. I did however have enough flying lessons 40 years ago to be confident of landing an airplane without killing anyone, but not so sure of keeping the airplane in one piece after all these years!

      You could. My buddy got in to a paint issue on fabric and it ended up costing $8,000. I’m not willing to take on that kind of risk.

    8,000 -$12,000 and paint is in the cost of materials at $3,000 to $4000 dollars ' . Depending on the model and if the wing spars are wood you may want to change over to metal spars . And was that a 7GCAA O-200 lycoming engine Aircraft

      It had the metal spar conversion..That's one of the reasons we liked it so much.

    Shame about the white paint, but you're lucky in the US to have such a large plane market, so lots of options out there. I've got a couple of nice venison steaks in my freezer to cook up! :) I've missed seeing Maddie's gorgeous face around recently. I guess she might be saving up for wedding related things as well as finishing off her degree. Cheers from venison country, New Zealand (where Kiwis pioneered mountain area helicopter shooting from the '50s with Bell 47s to Hughes 500s, etc, and from the 80s, helicopter live deer capture with shotgun propelled netting!) ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=live+deer+recovery+new+zealand, David

      The paint was a bummer. I thought we'd be buying it.

  • @JonathanCullifer

    I'm not an expert at fabric repair, but It looks like someone resprayed the white and used the wrong paint? What I do know is that you can't practically strip urethane paint from fabric, so repainting adds weight to the airplane. Usually the underlying fabric is fine. Let us know how this one turns out!

    • @quinnjim

      We are going to pass on this one. Too bad since it had some nice mods on the main gear suspension and the tailwheel was aftermarket too. The interior has really held up well since they redid it in 1995 too. If the white paint hadn't failed, I would have written him a check.

      @@quinnjim - One thing my buddy who does automotive bodywork and restorations told me is with paint, the base is EVERYTHING. What you start with is going to show through anything you put over it. Prep is key. Looks like some corners were cut during the last refinishing. Lots of reasons for paint lifting like that, but, I think you made the wise choice, John.

    Nothing wrong with posting a hunting video of your daughter taking a nice buck. Trigger alert your viewers. Those that want to, can. Those that are offended will still watch just so they can say they are offended. I'm part of the 9.53K subscribers. Not gonna lose me by any means. Not sure about the fabric/paint. I'm sure you will check it out thoroughly. Enjoy the vids immensely.

      What if you didn't have to see the shot? Probably still a "no go" for a lot of people. I understand when people are vegetarians and don't care to see where meat comes from. I was thinking folks just wouldn't click on a video that they didn't care to see. Hard call. We're leaning towards not posting it.

      Jim,
      I have seen your range clips and enjoyed them. Being fairly local even asked where it was at. 100% pro 2 A! You make a very good point concerning choice to watch! That being said if you wish to post you should do so. You have put your daughter on a bit of a pedestal in her aviation career. What she does outside of the plane with her Dad is her business. I would in all honesty not watch. Hope this helps.
