Stumbled across your vid as my lifelong interest in aviation was recently reignited. I was happily surprised when you mentioned Yeager. I live on the west side just beneath the approach to runway 5. So in conclusion it's about 25,000- 30,000 a year for you to own the Cessna when you include the hangar, subscriptions, insurance, and annual.
One certainly needs to be rich (at least upper middle class) to comfortably own this.

And this is on a 60+ year old airplane. BTW - I don't see a lot of folks putting 100 hours / year on their birds in my neck of the woods . That is close to 10 hours a month, presuming you are in a weather locale that allows a lot of flying

The cheapest way is to build an experimental aircraft and you can use auto conversion engine and be very reliable. You can then sign off your airplane inspection as a builder.

@@aviationguys247 Most people look down on a simple KR2 with a 1915cc VW engine but they fly great.. I really liked the 1959 172 with the O290 but it was a dog compared to the very quick Kr 2. The VW was enough engine and never failed me for 15 years. All cylinders and heads replaced was about $ 700 , try that on a C65 . 3 gallons an hour and stressed to 6 Gs plus. It was cheap fun. It was a whole lot of fun and small enough to share a small T hanger . And you didn't have to strain to put it through the paces.
You haven't attended a lot of funerals of pilots have you ?
Private pilot here. You've detailed well the associated costs. Two others to consider are depreciation and annual personal property taxes. The later of which is brutal depending upon where you live.
It's a grim fact of aviation life, being truly honest and open, that it was NEVER meant to be universally affordable or even attainable. And for any young person contemplating this arena as a career I would advise them to seek other avenues quickly. The frustrations are many and unending, the financial costs are stratospheric, and the payback is slow and often meager. Cheers.
Kerosene is more like Jet-A fuel. 100LL is a more like old leaded hi-test gasoline.

The LL in 100LL means "low lead", even though it contains more tetra ethyl lead than automobile gasoline. In either case it acts as a detonation inhibitor. Meaning it prevents the fuel-air mixture from going 'bang' before it's suppose to. That is known as pre-ignition which can destroy an engine.

The annual is only the inspection. Parts are crazy expensive, and add to the total. A selector switch fuel valve for my Piper Comanche 250 was $497 back in 2004. I’m sure it’s gone up much more than that these days.

My cousin had a fuel selector valve malfunction and he couldnt find one anywhere at any price so he ended up rebuilding it himself.

A door hinge on my 152 was quoted at $700 a few years back . New Battery - $1,000. New Prop - $7,000 ( in 2016) . new paint job - $16,000 ( in 2017) . The snazzy pointed spinner on the 152 ? ( three parts) - close to $1,000 , ( AOPA Parts Ad) not including painting .
In my experience its not the rising cost of fuel or parts but the hanger space and costs that are the biggest issues people run into that they underestimate.
Yeah it’s hard to find a hanger period.
Especially if you need a larger one for a twin or a jet.
And yes the prices of hanger space have skyrocketed
@@charlesrashid5675 I found that a KR2 is one hell of an airplane and literally spoiled me as to how forgiving it is and easy to fly. But it also shares a hanger real well . If you have to have liability insurance that's an additional cost.

My hanger is $130 a month. It's damn near impossible to get one but they aren't expensive once you have it. I'm in Kansas city.

Beautiful Bird there and the hangar looks equally impressive. I belonged to 2 clubs over the years. The 2nd club in recent times has a beat up C-172 which handles like a 20 year old auto and looks like one. Quit because I no longer felt safe. The club was pricey and the only club in town with Cessna. Own an airplane? Not I---never could afford it.
That sucks. Hopefully someday a safe plane will be available at your field to rent.
Good video! Just an FYI kerosene is in the same family as diesel vs 100LL is in the same family as gasoline. That's why if you put kerosene or diesel in a jar you have to use a torch to catch them on fire. However, with 100LL and gasoline, it will catch on fire with just a match. you can also run a diesel on kerosene just fine in fact I've done it without an issue.

There aren't a lot of Diesel 172s in the sky. . Most 172's run on Avgas (100LL), unless you enjoy detonation , power failure and a rebuild ( around $25,000 ++ for a factory Reman) t. Around here 100LL runs about $6.50 / Gallon. Oil is $10.00 / Quart
Yeah, many don’t have $13k a year to play with. Been doing the numbers like this for years. It never made any sense. I’ve been in a club that shares the cost of flying a pietenpol aircamper. Costs are nowhere near this of course. Plus we have a club atmosphere. Friendships. Nice VFR daytime only. Keeping it a cheap safe-ish sport.

If you catch the right wind at altitude you can actually go zero or negative ground speed
Pietenpol is a ton of fun. Stall speed is in the mid 30s. Cruise around 60mph
Regarding insurance . . . what is the hull value? what are your liability limits and exclusions?
I’ll never understand the high price of something like a 172. It is low complexity and the development costs have been recouped long ago. I get the efficiencies that come from volume, but can’t help but compare to automobiles.

Its a proven classic that has had minor tweeks over the decades
@@aviationguys247 the real reason aircraft and parts are so ridiculously expensive is due to, 1) FAA certification rules and then fact that the FAA is a bloated government bureaucracy that had a mission to promote aviation. But then they changed the mission to make aviation Safe as well as an inability to move into the 20th century much less the 21st. 2) the biggest reasons are a litigations brought on by Greedy ambulance chasing Lawyers that have made themselves very wealthy by sue every one and every body when there is an innocent. Liability insurance is the first $100,000.00 of the cost of a new plane. It got so bad in the 80’s that Cessna stopped production till Congress stepped in and passed laws. A 172 today is a five hundred dollar bill, in the early 70’s is was a 15 thousand dollar bill lawyers did that.
New SR-22s run to over $1,000,000.. Don't believe me ? go price one. THAT is why there are so many 50, 60, and 70 year old airplanes on the ramp.

Seat stops are not sufficient to comply with the AD on seat rails. Not a bad idea, and a very good backup if wanted. But not compliant.

Then 100 hours will cost you 20.000 = $200 per hour. The speed is 150 miles per hour. Then 1 mile cost will be about $1.33

Piston engines use AVGAS - essentially gasoline, 100 octane, low lead.
Turbine engines use AVTUR, essentially expensive kerosene.

100LL is NOT essentially kerosene. Your O-300 Continental should be eligible for a MOGAS STC, though.

Did you mean to say $500 per hour for insurance? I think I maybe misunderstood that. So if you fly an average of 10 hrs per month you're going to pay $5k??

What if you buy a plane and rent it out for other pilots that need for instance to making flying hours to get at least the minimum that is required. You can also have pilots that want to earn some money and fly with passengers and need a plane for that so they pay you a hourly fee so you can earn a littlebit each time to cover costs.
If you buy a more modern plane with digital screens and Garmin 1000 I assume you can fly IFR with ILS instead only VFR flying with a typical 172. Buying a much more modern Cessna can be very expensive but I think if you also rent it out many pilots will use it for training flights. So instead you make a huge investment and pay yearly a lot of money for maybe 100 flying hours. Is owning and automatically renting out the best solution to keep the costs at a bare minimum? You want at the end not only the fixed costs back but also a profit.
I would prefer going for flying a Cessna with Garmin 1000 so you have much more awareness where you fly. You can make a flight plans, fly even if the weather isn't great at some sectors and you can trust your instrument's to get not lost because planning and using only paper cards and something happens if you are at an unfamiliar place if you take for instance a long 5 hour flight. So a Cessna equipped with modern equipment and using a Flypad you don't have to be afraid if reading a paper chart isn't your strongest point where navigation is a very important point to be able to fly. But relying somewhat on digital navigation systems and have some weak points navigate just a map scanning visual to know where you are on thr map, so using modern systems that let you see where you are. A comparison everyone is driving with navigation and don't know how to use a paper map correctly. Is having some navigating weak points a problem to get your private pilot license?

As far as renting the things you have to consider is the additional cost of insurance
The increased wear and tear on the plan and the increased maintenance costs associated with the additional hours put on the plane. It’s very possible but just things to consider

And when your insurance company finds out you are running a commercial operation ( renting an airplane for money , carrying passengers for hire, etc.) instead of a single user private pilot , watch your premiums and restrictions go right out of sight . Unless of course you don't tell them. and that little minor detail will probably cause your claim to be denied when your friend damages or crashes your airplane . .

@@2Greenlid neither were automobiles for the average Joe when they first came out. Only the wealthy could afford one. But that changed. And that goes for a lot of technology that develops over the years. However in aviation, apparently it has never become affordable and never will.

100LL is NOT kerosene. JET A is basically kerosene. 100LL is gasoline with blue dye and a LOT of lead (LL is a huge misnomer) to increase octane/reduce detonation. Also engines DO NOT have to be replaced at a specific hour. Maybe your costs would come down if you understood what you need to pay for?

The entire engine has to be replaced every 1800 hours? Did I hear that wrong? That's less than a year for a plane being used full time 8 hours a day. And every year you have to pull the engine out and put a new one in that sounds ludicrous.
It is a recommendation that it be overhauled every 1800 hours
All general aviation planes and even commercial have some similar requirements
There are different overhaul times depending on the engine

AV gas is not kerosene by a long shot! AV gas 100LLis an alkyate gasoline of 100 octane. Diesel is measured in Cetane.
I see why all planes I looked at for sale are around 1800 hours, isn’t that nice of them? Not only are you buying a plane but a repair bill right out the gate. That’s messed up.

At 6.28 you say “....this engine has to be replaced every 1800 hours”. Are you sure? I understand Cessna engines cost tens of thousands of dollars to replace. Perhaps you mean overhauled or major service or suchlike.

If you can't figure out the cost of ownership on a helicopter and aircraft you can't afford the thing anyway you're better off renting and unit that has proper maintenance done not by a newbie pilot and they don't want the aircraft having a catastrophic engine failure so they're going to do proper maintenance if not extra maintenance fast oil changes more oil tests so if you're watching this video you need to be renting not owning

So basically if you have a 9-5, you can't afford to have your own plane. You need to own your own mega business or be wealthy enough that your interest from your wealth can pay all the expenses and then some. And you need to fly enough to justify even having one in the first place. I would rather own a yacht. Neither of which will happen. But if that is you, more power to you.
It’s definitely not cheap but I have found ways to have others at least offset my cost of ownership

I’ve seen movies from the 70’s where they fly these planes that look exactly like this. You would think the design would have advanced more by 2022. 🙄

Minor changes and tweeks but basically the same
They're still in production and have changed little other than the instruments. Oh, and the price. $xxxx,xxx Yeah. As far as overall design there's no reason to change it since it does exactly what it was intended to do. I have a lot of time in them as an instructor and in that role they excelled and were the first step up for students after the C150/152 for example. That said I haven't flown one in a number of years and may not be able to. My brain is no longer calibrated for such low speeds. ;)
Well it's still called cessna 172. But it has been modernized with screens inside, advanced autopilot, stability control. And there's difference in designs it might look the same from the front but there's some difference over the years.
Some modern whistles and bells ( trivia ?) but the basic design is still perfect for it's intended role.
Would you recommend this plane for sightseeing tours in the Caribbean ?

My annuals have ranged from $1200 to $12000
It really depends on what they find
On the last one I had it completely go they because i hadn’t had a cirrus service center go thru it. Also had to rebuild the mags. I can’t recall now what else they found but there were a couple of other costly items found.
In addition
Cirrus needs a parachute repacked every 10 years and that costs &10,000
And the seatbelts have airbags that need redone ever 5 years I think and that funds $5000

(Which made the wide variability in cost not understandable) Makes more sense now! Like I stated, unknowledgeable, just hatching a crazy idea in my head and came looking for information. Preferably six figures . Us peasants in the $60-80K range buy and fly 50 year old airplanes and hope for the best . The lawyers , Doctors and Hedge Fund Managers buy the new stuff. . It's like the old joke "If you have to ask "how much" you can't afford it.

Not replaced but it is suggested to be overhauled every 1800 hrs
@@aviationguys247 I purchased mine from A&P that owned it for about a decade before me, he decided to do top end inspection when it was getting close to TBO and he said there was not 1 thing that would make the engine un airworthy, he regretted doing it in the first place. Eventually I flew the plane home from NC to OR and I couldn’t be happier with the performance.
A lot more people now are coming to the conclusion to do an overhaul based on engine conditions instead of suggested TBO time, of which I’m a big proponent. Again, I’m speaking from a owner prospective not a business.
I find it slightly misleading but saying “…it need to be replaced” which is simply untrue. Anyhow, great video !

Except you need fly frequently 13000 us dolar a year just in cost is too much. And if you have overall maintenance engine every ,1500 hours. This cost will burn your pocket. 😅

Annuals are annual inspections that are required each year for a plane to remain airworthy.
Its a pretty detailed inspection of the entire plane

That is why God made Foreflight with moving airplanes , magenta lines and expandable displays , and put it on an IPAD. . $200 / year gets a LOT of data , but I still fly with paper charts ( which are updated every TWO months now.) as a backup

Ain't no such thing as "free Flying" . Sweat Equity at best . I flew 172s for Civil Air Patrol for 40 years and put up with all their horse****t , regulations , politics, and paperwork , flying for all the Alphabet Agencies . Or fly commercially , be a CFI , etc. There are ways to reduce your flying cost , but no one is going to hand them to you..

The nice thing about airplanes is they are inspected annually and any issues are addressed before they become a problem.
A planes panel can be more expensive than the airframe itself.
