I’m only 17, and I’m a classical pianist preparing to go into university for piano performance, and in December I play at Carnegie Hall. I want to be able to provide for a future family, but there isn’t much money in music unless you’re the absolute best, however this is the gift I’ve been given, so I’m trying to do my best to be as good as I can possibly be for the glory of God. And I would hope that my profession would be beneficial in that I would preserve beauty in an increasingly mundane and ugly world. Great advice Pastor Matthew!! I really appreciate all the time you invest in the channel!
Brother, I'm gonna be very straightforward with you. I'm a Christian saved by grace, and I have a bachelor's degree in piano performance. I will never recommend to you or anybody to take that route unless you are Lang Lang at your age; the music world is not only ungodly but very unstable salary and schedule-wise. I had to take a certification in Data Analytics because my bachelor's degree is pretty much useless to get a stable job. You can still glorify God by playing the piano and you don't have to go through a bachelor's degree, waste 4 years of your life, and end up switching careers because you can't have a stable job and therefore can't get married, etc. If you are gonna take the music track, then make sure you reach the PhD or DMA (and even then, it will be hard to find a stable job); if you can choose something else that will be in demand for the next 10 years, then choose that whatever it is. If I could do it all over again I would have chosen either Computer Science or Software Engineering. A lot of the tech careers are good for musicians because the brain operates similarly. Anyway, I hope I did not sound harsh, I just don't want other fellow believers to go through the same pain and anguish I went through because I did not choose a marketable career that would allow me to keep a stable Christian life.
@@alejandroguillen8392Is it alright if you drop your email? I’d like to continue conversation about this further with your situation and everything, really appreciate the advice brother, still trying to figure all this out so it’s good I have these different perspectives guiding me.
God bless trash collectors! Imagine our neighborhood without them? God bless electricians and plumbers! I will never forget a below zero winter where my kitchen sink was backed up. I was up all night bailing filthy water with a pot, from the kitchen sink to the bathroom, because we HAD to keep the water dripping so the pipes wouldn't freeze. Spoilers: They froze anyway. Did I mention I also had a fever from the flu? I still have flashbacks from all of that. God bless those men who squeezed us in. (Everyone's pipes were freezing/breaking.) They worked for hours in below zero weather, breaking up the concrete to get to the pipes. It was so cold their machines would not function. They didn't want to keep us waiting by going back to the shop to get different machines. So they ended up breaking up the concrete with hand tools. To this day, it makes me emotional as I remember watching those poor men out the window, struggling for hours in subzero temps. These are important and honorable professions!
Hi, when you are done with your sermon series through the book of Daniel, you really should collect those sermons and write a book. That is the best sermon series on Daniel I have ever heard. Thank you, Pastor Matt. God Bless you!
My son has just turned 16, just got his first job, and is starting to drive. I'm happy to hear someone vocalize the conversations I've had with him lately in such a succinct manner. As a guy who went to trade school, and worked my way into management and am finishing a bachelor's after the associates I earned before entering the trade, I really appreciate you acknowledging the trades are a viable career choice. The truth is there is a huge shortage of people in the trades and young men can make a living and take care of a family at a young age in these careers.
Excellent advice! I wish I heard this when I was younger, but it's never too late to put solid principles in place. And I'm sharing this with the young people in my life.
Reliant K song: "She's so pretty but she doesn't always act that way" Most guys don't care. All they care about is that they're pretty. And those who are not are left behind.
As an elderly man, I found this to be great advice. There are so many occupations that one can do, and any job done well glorifies God. Staying out of debt is a an important consideration.
pastor Matt, thanks for this. ill be 37 later this month and find this very helpful. please pray for me though as a lot of what was mentioned has been out of my reach due to chronic health issues and over 100 surgeries. im single and not able to hold down a steady job because of those issues and honestly its been especially lately messing with my feeling of worth as a man. i havent been able to be in church except online for a very long time and im even struggling with the church i watch as there are more and more doctrinal issues im noticing, but without the persinal connections im finding it extremley hard to find another local to go to, which is a big reason i watch yours and other strong men of God here on youtube. i desperately crave the. things you mentioned though
Regarding your sub point under item 1, I'll put a plug in for the Concordia University system. I just pulled up the website for Concordia University Wisconsin and while I wouldn't call it cheap the cost of tuition, housing/meals, and addition fees is a lot less than $100k per year, without accounting for any financial aid.
I live in a part of the world getting to a healthy church is tough.... My wife is emotionally wild. My church there are no appointed elders. I don't see a way out. I want to die....I don't see a way out.
I'm an Mdiv student with an eye to potentially being a pastor. Im doing so because it's required for ordination and because i want to best serve people. I've heard a PhD is a waste of time if you want to be in ministry, and not academia. Is there any benefit in considering a PhD?
Hot take: if a college degree doesn't pay for itself, its a bad investment. Dont forget your training isnt done when you start work full time! Keep learning, your employer may offer to send you to additional schooling/training

My guess is it's because all the young guys who watched Shapiro/Peterson "own the libtards" growing up became very intellectually driven and latched on to Reformed theology because it has a large intellectual element compared to most traditions (I think sometimes they focus too much on intellect and not the heart, which is a problem.) My source for this is this generally describes me and many guys my age I know.
I studied salvation and this is where it led me. Now I don't agree with every single thing like infant baptism but i get it. Another thing is the amount of maturity amongst the people who actually reflect the spirit of reformed theology, not the jerks out there, but people like Matthew who know what the believe and live so. God has guided me by His word and good faithful teachers here. I see fruit of Christ in many and therefore I'll stay. Also the richness of the reformed heritage, like the puritans and the westminster confession and particular baptists is so deep and full of practical and biblical Theology. That's what draws me. Helpful stuff. God bless.
Point 2 seems to assume marriage will just *happen* somewhere along the Christian life. Hasn't yet and at 34, I'm not sure it will. Other than that, pure brilliance.

I HIGHLY recommend Thoughts for Young Men by J.C. Ryle. It has aged like fine wine.

I’d love a video on switching churches. When you should, how to do it, and how to find the right one to go to
Great advice ( Im 63 ). I do truly wish something could be done about the out of control cost of college.

Why do you think young men in particular are drawn to reformed theology?
My guess is it's because all the young guys who watched Shapiro/Peterson "own the libtards" growing up became very intellectually driven and latched on to Reformed theology because it has a large intellectual element compared to most traditions (I think sometimes they focus too much on intellect and not the heart, which is a problem.)
