- Hey Newlys! I finally got my new passport in the mail, and I’m able to bring you this step by step video.
Changing your name after getting married can be a tedious task! In my first video, we learned how to change our name on things like our social security card, driver’s license, etc. Now, we’ll dive into how to change our name on our passports.
Some things I researched, while other things I learned through my own process.
It’s the next big step! So, make sure you watch, take notes, and let me know how you make out in the comments. Also, if I left anything out, please share your thoughts, and ask further questions in the comments below.
If you are new to this page, subscribe, and check out some more videos from Forever Newlywed.
Notes From The Video:
List of Important Documents You'll Need Throughout the Process:
Certified Copy of Marriage Certificate
Evidence of U.S. Citizenship (i.e. birth certificate)
Driver's License or State ID
Original Passport with maiden name
Approved Photo
Much love!
Newlywed 5 years later, finally changing my last name 😂 thank you for this video I usually follow the instructions really well but just wanted to make sure. Great video, I love how you explained everything and your style.
Yay!!! Congrats on 5 years 👏🏾 And you're right on time with your name change 😁 Thank you so much for taking the time to comment and I really appreciate your compliment!
Definitely looking to travel internationally this year! This was very helpful! 🥰
Yes! I hope you do ✈😉 Definitely glad you found the post helpful!
Thank you this was the answer I was looking for!!
Awesome! Thank you for taking the time to let me know 🤗
Great video! Thank you
No problem! I hope it helps 👍🏾 Thanks for taking the time to comment!
Hey, great information. Do you know if I can travel without getting my passport updated? I still a few more years before renewal and would prefer to save the $. Ty!
Girl, I hear you! I don't believe you'd get penalized for waiting until it expires. Just make sure that all your travel information is planned using the name and info provided on your current passport.
You can still travel without your passport being updated in your married name as long as you bring your marriage license with you. So your ID can say your married name and your passport can say your maiden. Just bring documents to support why there was a name change and you’ll be fine.
@@diamondaleese ok this was my question, i got divorce but my passport still has my ex name so can i travel with it?
@@BintaJessicaJalloh yes that’s completely fine. You must book your ticket with whatever your is on your passport. So if your passport is in your ex-married name then that is okay. Just book your ticket with that name and bring your documents to support the name change. In your case a divorce decree or any supporting documents for the divorce should be fine.
@@diamondaleese thanks so much
Oh my goodness, thank you so much! When you expedited your application did you write multiple checks or how did you go about making signifying that you wanted an expedited application?
Hey there! I actually didn't need my passport expedited. BUT it's really simple to do. On the application, you can note that you want the passport expedited. ALSO, write "EXPEDITE" on the outside of the mailing envelope. Keep in mind, there is a different PO Box address for expediting applications. Lastly, you will write one check, and that check will include the additional fee for expediting. If I'm not mistaken, it's an additional $60. Hope that helps!
how do you know what your fees are ?
Hi! From what I can tell the fees are the same across the board:
Passport Book: $130
Passport Card: $30
Both: $160
Expedited service is an additional $60.
Great info, my driver's license and ss card have already been changed to reflect my new last name. Do I submit the DS-82 or the DS-11? And do they still need the marriage certificate if my last name is already changed on my id?
So this might be a stupid question, however on the form it only states to include marriage certificate for name change. My question is do we have to send our birth certificate as well?? Like I said on the form it only says to include marriage certificate or divorce decree. It doesn’t say we have to send in birth certificate since this is a renewal, I think??? But maybe I didn’t see that??
Hey there!
That's a totally valid question! Thank you for asking. Nope! You do not need to send your birth certificate 👍🏾
Thanks for posting this! Also, just to be clear, when you’re just updating your passport to your new name. There’s no need to send in your birth certificate again? Because sending in my current book and card like verifies my identity, right?
So glad the video helps! I apologize for the delay in my response.
That's correct! You should not need to send in your birth certificate. Much success to you!
When we sign the DS-82 do we sign our maiden name or our new name?
Howdy!
You would fill out the DS-82 with your new name, and make sure you attach the requested documents that prove that you have reason to change your name (i.e. marriage certificate, etc).
My passport is valid through 2032. I just got divorced so what is the fee to change the passport please? And other than divorce decree, do i submit my birth certificate, and driver's license
Hi there!
From my understanding, the process and fees will be the same, with the exception of sending an official copy of the divorce decree instead of the marriage certificate. No need to submit your birth certificate or driver's license.
I'm wanting to hyphenate my maiden and married last names, am I able to do that? and do you know where on the form I can put that on the ds82 form please?
Hi there!
Yes, you can put the hyphenated name as desired. On the DS-82 form, you'd put it in the "Last Name" section, page 1. As long as you've legally changed your last name to the hyphenated one, you're good to fill it out with this full name.
It's says not to sign it
I can be wrong
I had to look at the site again myself! Did you send yours electronically or by mail?
When I did it by mail, it said I had to sign it. And everything went smoothly. BUT maybe you had a different experience? Lol if you didn't sign it and all went well, I say, "great"!
If I have already changed my name to my married name on my Driver's license and SS card, do I still only send in my marriage certificate as proof of change? Or do they need my new documentation as well?
Hey there! How's your process going?
I would say yes! It may depend on your state, but as far as I know, just send what they are asking for. I only had to send in an official copy of my marriage certificate (as far as proof was concerned). And when they sent my new passport, I got it back.
Do you sign the DS-82 form with your new name?
Hey hey!
You would fill out the DS-82 with your new name, and make sure you attach the requested documents that prove that you have reason to change your name.
Starts at 1:08 thank me later
LOL for those who need to get straight to the point 😉
Do we need to add a middle name to the application? My marriage certificate has my middle name but I don’t want it on my passport
Hey hey! Why am I just seeing this?? 🤦🏾♀️ No, you don't have to. Even though that extra information is offered on your marriage certificate, you can leave it off of your passport application.
sally few that girl
Talking way too fast
Noted! ☑️
When we fill out the DS-82 do we write our maiden name or our new name?

You would fill out the DS-82 with your new name, and make sure you attach the requested documents that prove that you have reason to change your name.
