I love him and I always will! Barrymore was full of live, he was a man full of contradictions (intelligent, subtle, athletic, wise, passionate, witty, talented, handsome but irresponsible, weak, brutal, melancholic, vulgar, addicted, pitiful, untidy) and that's why he was a brilliant actor. Tempest and Don Juan - he was great in these movies too.
There has never been a more perfect blend of a trained actor and a natural actor. He also had an uncanny understanding of comedy. He was born to perform. You cannot take tour eyes off of him.
Barrymore is criticized for Playmates and The Great Profile. He did parody himself...brilliantly. He lifted the material. why did he take such roles? he paid his debts to creditors and the government.
Jack Barrymore was the greatest Shakespearean actor of the 20th century. He added the psychological emphasis to Hamlet and Richard III. Even today no one varies from his interpretation. I would include "Grand Hotel", "Midnight", "Topaze" and "The Great Man Votes to the list. He was incredble as an actor and a tragedy as a man.
Absolutely loved John Barrymore! And his brother Lionel and Sister Ethyl! What a great family tree! John's voice, body language, and those eyes could carry such emotion! Could not stop drinking the wine of BarrymoreBarrymoreBarrymore!! His Sherlock Holmes (1922) was delightful also (with a very young William Powell and Roland Young!)
You are a movie buff indeed Igor! Check out my episode on my channel on the BARRYMORE's! Such a family history that I had to do a separate edition of the whole family. At the end are links to Lionel, Drew, John and Ethel! Hope you enjoy! ua-cam.com/video/55y9lk80E9I/v-deo.html
I have great respect for the talent of Mr. Barrymore after reading his biography. Like many great talents his demons overcame him. He is someone to be forever be watched . Thank you.
SO good isn't. Check out the elder Barrymore's on my channel. John Barrymore and Dolores Costello are the newest. ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
Badass. Yup he was. The way he persevered also with his addiction to alcohol was a testament to his acting. ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
Yeah, and on another site they don't even list him in top 50! Contemporary film fans don't even know what acting is they think its being cast in action roles.
I asked famed Producer Alfred de Liagre what he thought of Barrymores Shakespeare. He thought his Hamlet was rather overdone, but his Richard was thrilling
@Qwerty123 And I can see Fredric March also. Love him! I also did an episode on Mr. March on my channel. ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
I have done Drew's Grandpa and Gramma and Great Uncle and Great Aunt on my channel! Next week is Drew and then an overview of the whole FamDamily! ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
I couldn’t stand to watch more than 10 minutes of Twentieth Century. All they did was yell at each other at the top of their lungs. Not funny just annoying. John always seemed overrated to me while brother Lionel was underrated.
you must watch 20th century again 🙂slowly, you can see then how Barrymore acting is changing even with Lombard (from serious and delicate to funny and wild)

Everyone should read biography Goodnight Sweet Prince. Great actor, and a full life. Thanks for sharing.

how true!!!!
Thank you for not talking for three hours first and just showing the performances. Well done mate.
🙂
John was the greatest actor of all time . Thank you!
Incredible John Barrymore not Oscar nominated. at least for A Bill of Divorcement, Twentieth Century, Grand Hotel, Svengali, even Maytime.
Barrymore is criticized for Playmates and The Great Profile. He did parody himself...brilliantly.
He lifted the material. why did he take such roles? he paid his debts to creditors and the government.
also add Counsellor at Law
He and lionel.
@@peterthayer6238 Tempest!
Incredible performances by Barrymore and Lombard. Both should have got oscars for Twentieth Century.
Chris Plummer is having a drink and a laugh with Barrymore at this very moment...........

In Topaze he was wonderful, such shy, delicate and nice man.
Yes. Thank you.

Fantastic. Thanks for making this.

making my way through all of his movies right now
Twentieth Century should be number 1. He's brilliant in it.
I saw it recently for the first time and, boy, am I glad I did! He's amazing! And both him and Carole Lombard are hilarious.
Sand from The Holy Land!!!
@@qtandem Barrymore helps Lombard in some hard scenes and they liked each other
I loved him in Svengali he did some of the best acting I’ve ever seen within that film.
He was so creepy as Svengali!
ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
BRAVO!
Thrilling actor. Tragic fellow.
What a badass

@@walkoffamewednesdayswithto7237 Such a weird time to be alive. Also wth did I just witness?
Had he received Oscar-nominations for COUNSELOR AT LAW (1933) and TWENTIETH CENTURY (1934) they certainly wouldn't have been undeserved.
Svengali was my favorite I seen it tonight
RASPUTIN. All of the Barrymores in one film. No spoilers here.
In Svengali i don't know why he was wearing awful wig?
Good survey. Especially like the inclusion of “A Bill of Divorcement.” But where is “Counsellor at Law”?
Caprio ,Pitt eat your heart out this guy was a great actor
It's interesting that the comments favorable are mostly from men who seem to really appreciate his talents.
Yeah, and on another site they don't even list him in top 50! Contemporary film fans don't even know what acting is they think its being cast in action roles.
What about Counsellor At Law? Do you know it? I think it's my favorite of all his performances, along with Larry Renault in Dinner At Eight.
There are just so many! But great list!!!!! ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
I asked famed Producer Alfred de Liagre what he thought of Barrymores Shakespeare. He thought his Hamlet was rather overdone, but his Richard was thrilling
Hmmmmm. Interesting. I must say I do agree. ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
Welles said Barrymore was the best Hamlet and I believed him
Super Natural
Lee Tracy read him to FILTH! Too real!
I've never seen one of his films, but looking this he looks to me something like between Michael Caine and Gene Wilder...
Whoa. Yes! Gene Wilder. I can see it! ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
@Qwerty123 And I can see Fredric March also. Love him! I also did an episode on Mr. March on my channel. ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
Does he not remind anyone of Salvador Dali? I bet he could have pulled it off.
Whoa. Totally! Adrien Brody was a great Dalí in MIDNIGHT IN PARIS though. ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
Is this drew Barrymore's grandad
Yes!

Awesome compilation. His techniques are dated but the depth of his craft is clear cut. Too bad there was no footage of Maurice
So what was #7?
I Think Bill of Divorcement...........
His Svengali is evil, disgusting and pathetic. A real rival for Lugosi's Dracula
Whoa. Well said. ua-cam.com/video/WXsV8HIWcTE/v-deo.html&start_radio=1
🙏

Yes very overrated. More annoying than anything.
you must watch 20th century again 🙂slowly, you can see then how Barrymore acting is changing even with Lombard (from serious and delicate to funny and wild)
It’s not for you then for my self enjoyed it
The most movies Barrymore was completely drunk and seems as he sits and stumbles over his words
You are ignorant.
He moved his eyebrows way too much and his facial expressions were annoying.
every actor know how hard is to act differently in one film an be natural!, try it yourself at the mirror and you can see
womp womp 🙄
