@@DaveBailey18 both are reasonable complaints. I'm with you. My main concern is with the school and specifically the teacher that left that door open. But, once the shooter was inside, the police absolutely failed to honor their oath.
Another question I have on top of all those concerning the teacher, if they thought the shooting was over, why did they shoot the shooter?

As a science head teacher here in Australia I had the keys on a lanyard around my neck at all times. Nobody told me to do it. There were no rules / laws. It was just plain common sense. Fire breaks out in lab, firey (fire fighter) needs access through locked rooms, as we stand evacuated in car park, ay voila! Here they are. Ditto our Principal and Deputy Principal. And that was 30 years ago! And we have very strict gun laws. The school was however in a major capital city in the centre where several drug cartels operated. Many illegal guns.

@@garyrolen8764 The biggest problem here is lack of security in public places. 10 days earlier it was a supermarket in Buffalo, NY that got shot up and if it wasn't for that security guard who shot at the gunman it probably would had been worse. Did this school have any security guards on campus? Not that I heard of!

WRONG. cops were ready to risk lives going on, didn't you watch the full video or r u 1 of the CRIMINAL teachers who propped that door open ILLEGALLY? Those heavy doors cannot be kicked down by cops, nor criminals which is why they're used: teachers are supposed to use SECOND set of doors to lock kids in, while FIRST set of doors delays attacker... Instead teachers LET the gunman in, giving HIM the power those doors give.
SECOND FATAL (CRIMINAL) ERROR WAS ALSO BY SCHOOL STAFF: now they need KEY since u cannot kick it. Took nearly the full hour to give cops the key. Sounds like teachers used these days the investigators needed to investigate & release this to falsely blame the cops to deflect from their own CRIMINAL recklessness.

I am a 25 year veteran Police Officer and I have been working in a school for the past 7 years. Every Police Officer in this country has been trained, and trained, and trained again, on how to handle these incidents. I am sorry, but there is no excuse for this. The officers are beyond the point of turning in their badges, they should be prosecuted. Every Police Officer has a "Duty to Act", even if ordered not to, and especially if the order in unlawful, immoral, or unethical. The officers had so many options available to try, drop ceiling, windows, knock down walls, etc. I usually wait to reserve judgement until all of the evidence is in, but I don't see how any of their tactics, or lack of action, can possibly be justified.
As far as how to keep this from happening again...after 9/11 we secured plane cockpits and airports. It's not rocket surgery, secure the schools. It isn't hard to do, it just costs money. How much are our children worth? Everyone wants to go at it from the gun control end. After 9/11 we didn't ban planes. Secure the schools, plain and simple. Schools continue to be targets because they are easy targets to inflict enormous loss of life and shock the public. If we secure the schools, they would no longer be easy targets. There is a concept in Law Enforcement that has been around for a very long time called CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) and it works. Construction and technology are the answers to secure our schools.
This isn't a gun problem, its and evil people problem.

That was true in my elem building when I was a student. My building where I taught had “open concept:” picture a half circle with 6 full size classrooms, a teacher work area, and 3 small instructional spaces are on the straight edge of the half circle, with a set of double doors to the hallway on each end. When they added two pods onto the building, there’s only one set of pod doors to the hall, but they DO NOT Lock (something about the doors having to swing different directions for fire safety). The new pods are the farthest away from the office and also have doors to outside. Teachers have been concerned about lock downs in those pods ever since they were built, 15 years ago.

Several years ago a school shooting occurred at the high school I attended. Except this shooting was done by the school resource officer (also a local police officer) who shot and killed a deranged man who entered the school, following a student who was late getting there. The school immediately went into lock down and the resource officer confronted the man who was armed with guns and intent on using them, in the hallway. She tried at first to diffuse the situation but when she was unable to do so she shot & killed him before he could endanger anyone else. The school was Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, TN. The officers name is Carolyn Gudger, and in my hometown she is a hero. She is the perfect example of what a school resource officer should be. A courageous woman who did her job, putting her life on the line for the students/faculty she was hired to protect. I was very disappointed that there was not a lot of media attention surrounding this incident, except for locally of course. I just really wanted people to see what a difference having a well trained, courageous police officer who takes their promise to protect and serve seriously on campus can make in these situations

When this occurred and how they ( the mother and the cop) actually entered the building is not known for sure. I can see any parent would risk their life to save their kids. Maybe the police should have followed the mother 's lead and entered one way or another. The mother who took charge of the situation and got her kids out is a true hero.

This is awful on many accounts. Seems no one was prepared for this. Teacher propping door open, no resource officer present, school not going into lockdown fast enough for teachers to lock their classrooms, waiting an hour for a key?? Bad communication, little urgency - this is what being comfortable looks like. They thought they were already on summer vacation. I’ll bet every school in America kept their doors closed & locked the very next day. It shouldn’t take something like this to follow basic safety procedures.

In my community, one resource officer is responsible for multiple schools. Just like many other school staff: nurses, psychologists, social workers, OT, PT, and SLPs.

@@Flipper86 In that case, they miss the point of resource officer, which is to have a constant presence on campus. Here is where the community needs a vetted security officer in every school, with the commissioned officer for overall coverage, or to back up the first city officer to arrive.

They didn't even need a key bc the suspect couldn't lock the doors behind him after going in bc the doors only lock from the outside, with a key, and he didn't have a key

Before going out to lunch, Evalynn stopped in her classroom to get her school supplies around 11:05, Mia said.
“We ended up talking to the teacher, Mr. Reyes and he let us know that the door would be unlocked for her to get her backpack. He said we were more than welcome to walk back there to grab Evalynn’s belongings, sign her out and leave,”

I’m confused to why a teacher left the door open? As teachers, we know better than that. We can’t even leave the doors to our classrooms open and unlocked. What was she propping the door open for?

Teachers shouldn't even have a Cell phone with them. They're working. I cant have my cell phone with me at work. But teachers think they have to be available to everyone. There's phones in every room to contact the office not do personal calls and or text messages. Also not fair listening to music with your ear buds. Fire them all for using cell phones.

@@dioniciobenavidez5386 I am a teacher and I carry my cell phone with me at ALL times. The reason is that schools have become targets for mass shootings. The phones in the classrooms do not have the capability to dial 911. And even if they did, what if there were an emergency across the room, and I could not access the phone? If there is a school incident, I have my cell phone on me at all times for my own protection, and for the protection of the students that I am responsible for.

Jesus, you people are so clueless. The teacher heard the truck crash outside. She opened the door and left the door open so she can get back inside while she went to see what happened. She saw the accident and walked back to the classroom to call 911. She didn’t know that the driver was the shooter.
