  • This video pits the Martin D-18V and Eastman E10D against each other in a side by side comparison. Both of these guitars are solid mahogany dreadnought acoustic guitars with spruce tops. The big difference comes down to price and the Eastman is less than half the cost of the Martin.

I have had and played and owned many martin d18's and others. I have just purchased a eastman e10d. I have played a several e10's have had one that i wasnt overly pleased with but the rest were amazing for the price. I know this will probably piss allot of people off, but im sorry martin is not what they used to be. I absolutely love my vintage martins, but as far as new guitar, i go for eastman.

I just bought the Eastman E10DE - and it's amazing. I don't happen to have a Martin handy to compare, but this is a very, very fine instrument.

All the nay-sayers can nit pick the differences and their points are valid.
Eastman sources their Adirondack wood for tops from the same place Martin does .
So if you got $2500 to drop on the Martin, go ahead. If not, spend about $1500 less and get a great guitar that sounds so close to the Martin, no one else could ever tell.
I own an Eastman OO and the build quality and tone is excellent.

I own seven Eastman guitars. They are; E8D, E8OM, E10D, E10OM, AC515, E1D, and a PCH1-D. They are all amazing values. In 40+ years of playing, owning, and loving guitars and guitar music I have not seen a better value. (The ONE possible exception might be the Yamaha FG800 @ $199; an ASTOUNDING guitar for the price.) I have compared these Eastman guitars to their Martin and Collings equivalents and the Eastmans have always compared VERY WELL and more than held their own. I would always suggest checking out Eastman’s guitars before paying $3000 or more for the Martins and Collings guitars.

you might also look at the Blueridge guitars, esp the adirondack top models like the BR-140a. I haven't played one but a guy on youtube has one matched up against a vintage D-18 and it's pretty convincing. I think they can be had for about $800. It's chinese made, but I am a believer in adirondack spruce tops, hard to get that in a lower end guitar.

In this vid the Martin does sound warmer BUT in my experience the Eastman will provide a flat picker with more power when playing solo.

at 0:13 to 0:16, you are using the E20D instead of the E10D model.
More clarity n a tad more volume to the Eastman.
The 18GE is Adi top. I'm not sure about the D-18V.

@ramblingdanwinnipeg Totally agree. Although Haggerty is clearly marketing the imported Eastman, I appreciate that the demo illustrated the USA Martin tone superior IMO. I believe the Eastman even has an Adi top, and still comes in second. Classic example of getting what you pay for.

I have not tried a lot of spruce top dreads in that price range so I can't really give advice there. I like the Martin D-15 and the OM1-GT but those are different animals. I've seen Larrivee D-03 for about a grand and that's a very nice guitar. Honestly though I would say save up a little more and look around for a used D-28. You won't regret that and used acoustic guitars sound much better after a few years anyway.

Put in a little overtime and buy the Martin. Play it for a lifetime and pass it on down for generations.

I noticed nobody mentioned the prices of each at typical retail. My experience owning most of the major brands is that Nobody uses notro finish or builds the guitars of more handsome woods than Eastman. An Eastman AC420, for example, is in the 700 dollar range with case and bone/bone. Look for that on any Martin or Gibson. You can get a better sound that you prefer with a much more expensive Martin or Taylor (well over 1000 dollars).

To those to feel that the Eastman sounds thin/tight: Keep in mind that it's a brand-new guitar and it will open up over time. I've had my E10D for a couple years and it's delightful.
I'm not saying one is better than the other. That's purely subjective. The guitars are different and they sound different. I played a couple D-18s last week and may buy one someday.

      arent both of them new?

    • @ClassicalPan
      @ClassicalPan 2 роки тому

@@petesnowden7322 Could be. The one D-18 I played did have a more open, boxy sound than my Eastman, so this video is pretty accurate in showcasing the differences. To be honest, I didn't care for the Martin when I played it, but that could be because it's not what I'm used to.
At this point, however, my dream guitar wouldn't be a Martin. The video demonstrations are great and the brand hype had gotten to me, but I'm pretty well over it now.

I prefer the Eastman for strumming and the Martin for fingerpicking. I like the more fundamental sound for finger picking.

considering the price difference the eastman sounds absolutely amazing. can't justify the double price on the Martin.

Given that these are the same size, shape, and both all-solid of similar (not identical) woods, this video is a much more representational comparison than most of the guitar comparo videos on youtube. To my ears the Martin does have a more complex and richer sound - but it costs more than twice as much as the Eastman. The Eastman (and Blueridge) may be Martin clones - but they are also very good instruments on their own, at around 1/2 to 1/3 the price of a Martin.

Martin usually sets their action higher than Eastman, which makes them louder

I had a 2008 D-18V. he D-18 had nothing to offer w/ light strings and , that is what I prefer. With mediums the Martin opens up and has a decent sound. The E10D bought performs unbelievably well with light gauge strings. I sold the Martin. Also, the D-18 gives the characteristic Martin sound but, not much else. The E10 delivers much more in complexity of tonal output. I just wish I could have the E10 tone emanating from the Martin but, such is not to be. I far preferred the neck on the Martin as the E10 is too wide and, the frets feel almost jumbo sized.

The Eastman sounds like a nato guitar, much like my old Yamaha. Not bad, but thinner than the D18v.
If I was just looking for a bargain price, I'd look for another Yamaha.

FIRST: This may be apples to apples comparison, but it's a comparison of two different varieties. The E10D, with its Addy top, has more pronounced note separation. So by comparison it may sound bolder or clearer to the untrained ear--or the may Martin sound muted or muddier. Again, that's to the untrained ear. Futhermore, the Addy top gives the E10D more headroom, so naturally it retains its focus better when given more input (i.e heavy strumming or flat picked), but may seem less full when fingerpicked. Essentially, you're comparing pies made with two varieties of apples: Granny Smith vs Jonathan. Which tastes better is purely a matter of preference for one ingredient over the other, not just how the ingredients were mixed and baked.
SECOND, Don please do yourself a favor and take a sip of water before pressing the record button. The dry mouth is a bit off-putting.

Strumming, they sounds nice in their own way. But for fingerpicking, Martin wins by far. In fact, I hate the Eastman sound for fingerpicking.

Eastman should be half the price-it has half the tone of the Martin. I listened to this through some Grado headphones as well as my studio monitors and there is no comparison. The Martin has warmth and body-the Eastman is much thinner sounding with no complexity in the tone.

  • @sc12100
    @sc12100 11 років тому

    Horrible comparison.
About 70% of the tone of sound from an acoustic guitar comes from the soundboard (top wood of the guitar).
Why would you compare Sitka to Adirondack?
What you should compare is the Eastman E10d to the D18GE. Thats when you would hear similarities - somewhat.
I have and love my Eastman E10D. Thats because I cant afford a D18GE or a D18 Authentic.

The Martin is clearly superior! I think the Eastman is great for the money, but this one at lest does not sound nearly as good as the Martin. Listen with headphones. The Martin has a much more open sound. But the Eastman is quite a good buy for the money.

these guys are salesmen pushing eastman guitars. if you listen closely with good headphones it's pretty clear they fiddled with the EQ to try to make the martin sounds worse / eastman sound better. it still didn't work.

  • @unabonger777

first off the recording is terrible on both. the martin has way better bass and string separation. the eastman sounds brighter but sounds tinny and unclear. i'm listening on Sony MDR studio headphones and an Apogee DAC. yes, martin is overpriced and inconsistent, but i'm not falling for the idea that what sounds brighter or louder on youtube is a better tone.

to me it sounds like they EQ'ed the martin down really bad on the flat picking part and boosted the midrange on the eastman for the fingerpicking. in any case, the recording sucks. these guys are salesmen, probably pushing eastman. just look at this guy, he seems like an overgrown 8 year old.
