Wish there were more pianists like Ugorski!

Anatoly Ugorsky is one of the best representatives of that Leningrad - Petersburg pianistic school, which Vladimir Sofronitsky, Marina Yudina, and genius Grigory Sokolov belonged to over the years. Even the great Rosalyn Turek was a successor to the old St. Petersburg pianistic tradition abroad (she studied with Sofia Brilliant-Lieven, who was once an Assistant Anton Rubinstein at the St. Petersburg Conservatory). Unfortunately, now this school is in decline and does not bring up comparable performers. Ugrsky taught at the Leningrad (now St. Petersburg) Conservatory for some time. Later he studied in Moscow and with Dmitri Bashkirov, who also is from Moscow-school (Goldenweiser), but grew up in Tiflis. I have the impression, the influence from St. Petersburg can still be heard in Volodos' playing. I heard Ugorski live about ten times and he was always great. Unfortunately the last time is about 14 years ago, but after that he played less and less concerts and during the last years I did not find any informations about concerts with him. Students of him told me about some health-problems. Let's hope he will return to stage. He has such a lot to tell, but now is 79 years old. A friend of mine listened to Ugorski's teaching in the german town Luebeck during a masterclass in summer 2018 or 2017. He is a piano-tuner and sometimes worked for Ugorski's concerts and admires his playing very much. He told me, Ugorski still played wonderful during that masterclass ("everything is still there"), but when asked about upcoming concerts, he did not give informations about any plans (sigh). He has a strange biography: he studied both in St. Petersburg and in Moscow, and at first he studied at the famous Glinka Choir School in St. Petersburg. Only boys are admitted there, starting from the first grade and taught for 12 years in the specialty "choral conducting" (that is, they train choirmasters). This school gives very good training and very many of its graduates easily enter the conservatory, many later become symphonic conductors, and some become vocalists (after all, conducting a choir is associated with choral singing and some students have good singing voices). But Volodos left this school, then studied at the School at the Moscow Conservatory as a pianist and graduated from it. After that I went abroad and trained in Europe, but I never received an official higher education. However, he does not need it, he made a brilliant world career without him. Thank you for the extra knowledge. Ugorski and his family left Russia because their lives were made utterly miserable there. He wasn’t considered politically “reliable” (whatever that means) and the govt consigned him to an out-of-the-way province to conduct a small choir. In the end his daughter, also a pianist, received anti-Semitic threats, and so they fled Russia and spent years in an East-German refugee camp. Eventually a record company heard him play the Diabelli Variations, wanted to record the work - and from there it was onwards and upwards. In those days Europe was relatively safe for Jewish people. It no longer is.

He just finished three concerts in Taiwan!! I was deeply touched by his Liszt's sonata and Petrouchka...very sophisticated and poetic.
