Some of them I think should be standard in all bags (lockable zippers or zippers with those little loops to make them annoying to access), but some seem unnecessary to me. Like the strap to secure the bag to a fixed point - if I'll need one I can bring one (one of those long wires with two loops you can hook a lock through), but I pretty much never bother so it's mostly just unnecessary added weight for me. On the positive side, though, using those extra locks and security gadgets might draw more attention to your bag (it stands to reason that a bag with visible security like that would signal that there are valuables in it) - an integrated one matches the bag and doesn't stand out and will probably just look like another backpack strap laying around.
Yes I do. I own many pacsafe products, and like all of them, but don't own any of their backpacks yet. This one in particular is one I've been considering for a few years. They've reduced the size of their branding on these packs, as they used to be huge. That's one of the reasons I never purchased one. As for the RFID features, that's a feature all manufacturers should be using. That's the most popular way electronic pickpocketing is happening. Anyone with a cellphone can pull all your data off your credit cards and cellphone sim and use them without coming in physical contact with you. I've seen this happen in the Dubai metro by some Filipino girls and on the streets of Istanbul by some locals. While in London a group of Romanians attempted to physically pickpocket my shoulder bag but couldn't because it was a pacsafe. They had difficulty getting inside. So, yes it happens both ways unfortunately. Knock on wood, I've never been a victim yet. I wouldn't personally store any valuables in a backpack. I keep all my valuables in two separate RFID money belts that I keep on me (front and back) while in travel mode under loose clothing covered with a vest or jacket. I also store my phone in mylar bags to help block the sim card in sketchy areas. Every thing helps. Thanks for the review! I think I like this pack even better since you showed more detail than I've seen before.
I do like the tech safe features and ability to lock the pack up. However, with the exomesh I am a little confused. Are people really cutting into backpacks these days all the time? Maybe I am out of the loop.
@@TheToeKnee216 Yes, they do. They use exacto knives they conceal in their hands while walking down the street. They routinely slash the bottoms of women purses and handbags and snatch anything that falls to the ground as the woman has no clue what is going on. Happens frequently in Paris for example. And yes the slash open backpacks while you are wearing them.
@Global Adventurer I guess I don't travel enough. I do hear about some horror stories about people getting stuff stolen but didn't realize this was now a thing. My wife and I travel a few places a year and thankfully have never had any issues like this.
I do like the general form of this backpack - not too wide, and it doesn't stick out too far from your back. I definitely agree re: hip belts. I love them, I think all larger bags should have them, but I also think they should be stowable or even removable for when the bag isn't so heavily packed or you're only carrying it a short distance. I am definitely not a fan of that laptop compartment situation - that's a deal-breaker for me. I'd rather not have a padded compartment at all (making the bag a bit lighter), which I realize isn't going to happen anytime soon, but if there's going to be a dedicated location for my single heaviest item it MUST be somewhere that makes sense ergonomically. On a similar note: what is up with bags that have the safety pocket at the point furthest away from the body? This one's far from the worst I've seen, but still. I don't care how many safety features they claim the bag has, I'm never keeping my passport and debit cards in that RFID pocket. I'm keeping those either in a small crossbody bag at my front, or (in bags that have them) a pocket as close to my back as possible.
On a completely unrelated note: would you consider including metric measurements when listing the bag weight and dimensions? Not a huge deal, but it'd make that little bit easier to get an idea of the bag without having to pause the video and find the stats online 🙂
Good point on the pocket positioning FaerieDust - there's certainly better positions for RFID-secure zippered pockets. Thanks for the videoing. That’s very informative. It will be awesome if you could demonstrate how to choose between X40 and EXP45 too. Thank you in advance.
I really like this pack. Actually could have gotten a bigger pack, because this is really good for carry-on vs wheeled bags because the same size bags with wheels do not fit well in over head
In Rome, Italy, pickpocketing got to the next level. People go around with a card machine, usually concealed in a hip pack or hand bag. And if you don’t have an RFID wallet/ pocket you are left with £/$/€ 30 less. And I'm sure this will be even more popular with time and with card machines getting smaller smaller to carry.
Hey George - thanks for sharing your experience here. We're definitely seeing more and more products with RFID protection, so we're interested to see how this develops with packs in the future too. 👍 - Rebecca
My sisters live in the states and my dad visits every year and every year he has issues with his cards being scanned. He has invested in RFID safety gear and it has worked out for him.
Can I take this backpack along with a carry-on suitcase on flights (international)? Or will the size of this backpack cause airlines to force me to check in the backpack or my suitcase carry-on? Thanks!
Hi ayang315 - feel free to check out review page where we list the carry-on compliance of each bag we review! packhacker.com/travel-gear/rei/ruckpack-40/ - Tom
Hey Praxis-Cat - it's on par only if the hip belt is on as well. With the hip belt unbuckled on the Pacsafe, it's uncomfortable in the sense that your arms can brush against the hip belt as it's flailing around. Peak Design has the upper hand with the hiding ability. - Tom
Thanks for the response! I'm surprised because most people who reviewed the Peak Design Travel Line didn't really have much to say about comfort either way. I know PD has struggled with comfort on their 30L Everyday Backpack, so I'm (pleasantly) surprised to hear that it's a comfortable carry.
I'm going travelling soon for a total of 3 months and was thinking of this bag. Will a long trip suit this bag? Or will I need something bigger? Kind of wanting to travel might
I wonder if the laptop compartment location is to avoid damage to the laptop when carrying heavy loads? I am apprehensive about using laptop compartments right against my back. Esp when carrying the new delicate iPad pros that bent with regular use.
Hey wilsonkyu - from testing we've found that having the laptop against your back puts in a straighter position and depending on the pack will offer more protection too. 😊 - Rebecca
The laptop compartment location is likely due to the design of the door on the backside for accessing camera gear when using the optional camera insert. I've been quite happy with this bag (I use the smaller camera insert), but having the laptop closer to the back would be better. It would make opening the backdoor a bit more difficult, since the back cover would become heavy and inflexible, so it's a compromise designed for a secure but accessible location for the camera. For example in Peak Design Everyday Backpack the laptop compartment is against the back, but the the camera compartment is not as safe because pickpockets could open the sides pockets and take the camera quite easily.
Esko Luontola the peak design bag is definitely not designed for being secure. They do have those hook loops that try to make it more difficult. But unlike this brand, their focus is security for travel like all their other bags. I noticed a few companies such as pakt and evergood where they put extra care on designing their laptop compartments. I have damaged my MacBook when using the laptop compartment on my goruck. So these days I use the second compartment on my GR2 to store my laptop or even just put it in the main compartment furthest away from my back. As for my peak design I don’t have a choice so I would carry the bag lower on my back to avoid putting too much flex on my laptop. I think evergoods got their design right with their complex shoulder strap.
Hi, do you have a sense of how much this bag really holds? I tried the Tortuga Setout women's fit 35L and it was about 2 to 3 liters too small for what I need to carry. Wondering how this bag compares (not including the little organizer spaces but the primary storage areas. I think it is not as perfect a bag, but the 45L setout is far too big. Many thanks for any insight.
