Hey buddy, thanks for putting this together. Sounds great!! Good breakdown of the characteristics. I was actually thinking this morning about the 340s. Someone had mentioned the 360 cam was made milder as part of the emissions coming in. I was checking the 340 specs and you are correct, they are very similar to this cam. Also, thanks for the shout-out! 😀
Yah, if you're talking about the STOCK 340 cam, this isn't it. Not even close. The factory cams didn't have a 'lope'. It was more of a 'motorboat' sound. That 340 stock cam was sold in a TON of places as a reboxed Wolverine (CMC) grind. The specs were 268/276 adv 210/220 @.050 .429/.444 lift, 44 deg overlap and 114 centerline. The SB and BB Mopar HP cams had WIDE lobe centers, 114 & 115 respectively, to cut down on the overlap. Because of this and the longish dur they had very long and late exhaust timing events. PAW had a good version under their SSI brand and Erson still makes a decent copy with very minor tweaks. No point in buying a Mopar Perf cam. You can find better for less than half the price.
I had a purple shaft in a 440 68 Charger with a 4-speed and I loved it totally forgot about it that was a long time ago back in the mid-eighties out of all the Chargers iPhone that was my favorite
There were three "purple shaft" cams. This is from memory, a long time ago... the .450/.455 268* cam, a .471" (forget the duration), and a .484". I think, not positive, that the .471" came with the 6-pack setup.
You’re talking about from the factory for production cars? Interesting. I think in the 80’s there were a lot more options from Direct Connection for the after market.
@@JonnyMopar I don't think the .484" was offered for anything except in the DC catalog. I don't know if the .471" cam came on the production 340 6-pk, but know that was the came recommended for it in the catalog.
Correction, the original purple shaft hydraulic cams were 471 lift 280 duration ( known as hemi cam ), the 484 lift 284 duration and the 509 292 duration cam. The cams were available over the counter only and available for big and small blocks. The small block was 508 292 duration. None of the purple cams were ever installed in production vehicles. The 340-6 used the production 340 cam. The 440-6 used a cam with same specs as magnum cam but had lower lobe angle to compensate for much stiffer six pack valve springs and utilized 3 bolt timing gear.
It always sounds like in reminds me of picture a dog all excited looking left looking right its tail wagging its going back and forth jumping around trying to catch up to itself that's what that purple shaft always sounded like to me and it's a great great f****** camshaft yep good pet
For some reason I was thinking that cam had more lift , when I put it in my 340 Duster , back in the mid 80's. Seems like it was 484 lift , but I don't remember the rest of the specs. I remember I was advised to get the adjustable rockers (.very much like the 273 rockers ). Then again my stock rockers may have been worn a bit.
Got a purple cam in my murder doba it has a 71 383 I've never measured the cam to see which cam it is but it does sound mean. You can hear it in my first video I ever made... And I got purple cam I bought in the 90s I'm going to use in a motorhome 440 after I add some compression.
Probably came out of the same re-boxing factory as the Summit. Those are ALL what they call 'white box' cams. Probably ground at Camshaft Machine in Jackson, MI. They change suppliers quite often. In the '80's they used Cam Dynamics and then switched to Crane as a supplier. Those are all made on gang grinders. You're not getting super attention to detail, they work but why not save some money and get a Summit, Jegs, Melling, or Elgin. Most of these generic profiles are OLD General Kinetics catalog cams. They had lobes starting at 194 @.050 on up in 10 degree increments.
I'm kind of new to Hot rodding, can you just replace the cam and be done with it? Or do you have to replace the lifters and rockers as well? I have a 318 I want to bump up a bit but I want to start with something within my ability. Thanks in advance
in a hydraulic flat tappet cam, yes. roller cam? no. also, depending on cam size, you will also have to get better valve springs(this is almost always a thing you have to do)
Hey Johnny sounds great! I’m in Barstow California and I’m having issues with my 440, do you know anyone you trust in Cali to do a rebuild on a 440 or anyone who’s selling one that runs ? I have a 77 440 in my charger
The 77 or 440 has low compression pistons in it you can't get as much horsepower out of one of those as you would find in a factory early early 70s late 60s 440 engine the strongest and most powerful torque for 440 they came out factory came out in the 1966 Chrysler in imperial It had closed chamber 426 Max wedge heads on it when it came out factory this was the first year the 440 was introduced in 1966 that engine was the most powerful torque engine that year that was made and it still has more torque than a stock 440 today sadly their very rare now and hard to find
@@sammyprestwood3182 they didn’t have max wedge heads on the 440, and they definitely didn’t come in the imperial.. also they never made a factory single 4bbl intake for the max wedge port heads, and the 413 and 440 imperials were all 4bbl cars
Oh, I disagree. Take a bone stock 318 and drive it, then swap it with that cam and you’ll see a big difference. But if you’re going for big horse power then yes, compression or power adders will up the ante.
I have a 69 satellite with a 230 hp motor 9"2-1 compression rebuild with 40 over stock speed pro pistons stock crank ,thin gasket milled heads ,bigger springs paired with 4bbl crosswinds intake sum 340 cam headman headers, 2-1/2 exhaust h pipe with turn downs ,600 cfm carb..355 gear gears...made 307 hp 352ftlb torque..1st pull changed carb to 750 made 317/356. So a cam can change hp with the right combo..the car is fun to drive.

The old purple shaft cam!!! Been out forever, used to be the go to cam!!!
Sounds Awesome! Might need to try that out In my 2wd Ramcharger
I had a purple shaft in a 440 68 Charger with a 4-speed and I loved it totally forgot about it that was a long time ago back in the mid-eighties out of all the Chargers iPhone that was my favorite
running the same cam in my 78 d100 short bed with 915 heads and headers sounds like your duster nice cam
That was a great running 360. That’s my go to cam for street driven small Blocks.

A few years ago I got incarcerated and some came and stole my 85 D150 off my property it still hurts to this day😢
Oh man, sorry to hear that.

Lol. I think that’s a great analogy. And yes, they make great pets to their owners.

that sounds like the 284/484 purple shaft you had.

Sounds good.
Summit makes a cam very similar and for about half the cost. I like the old purple shaft cams but the price is so much for them now.
plus they are olllddd tech. much better profiles now.

Would this cam do okay with a stock converter in an 80s 318 car? (Yes, intake & exhaust upgrades.)
You need to put aftermarket heads 2 choices edelbrock or trick flow $$$$3000 plus
id say yes.
Yes, as long as it not a roller, stock converter paired with intake ,4bbl, headers and at least a 3:23 gear you will be smiling 😀
If i put this cam in my dodge d100 would it still be smog compliant?I live in california
If your D100 is 75 or older you’re good. 76 and later I assume it won’t pass.
Thank you sir🙏🏾
A camshaft doesn't make a car faster or any more powerful if you still have the stock pistons and crankshaft
Oh, I disagree. Take a bone stock 318 and drive it, then swap it with that cam and you’ll see a big difference. But if you’re going for big horse power then yes, compression or power adders will up the ante.
bullcrap.
Wanna bet

Wallace hp calculator says about 280 hp
Mine made 317hp /356tq with additional parts. 68 318la 230gross hp 305ftlb torque.
