I've known for 20 years that Phish was great, but it was just last month that I discovered the existence of something called the "Went Gin." Since then, my new routine has been the same: get home from work, load up this video, listen to it all the way through, crying from about the 9 minute mark to the end, then rewind it back to about the 7 minute mark, let the tears flow as it plays through again, then rewind it again, cry some more at the beauty of what is unfolding, and so on.
My second show, if you count the day before. I remember standing toward the back of the concert field by myself (had lost my friends hours earlier) and watching literally the entire crowd leaping up and down at the same time during this peak, hugging, crying, all of it. I'm not sure I'll ever see something so amazing again so I return to it once in a while when I need a lift...
No great Phish show story is complete without "I lost my friends". All my best show stories all start with "So there I was, not having a clue where the hell my friends were..."
Wish we could have that level of engagement at a show today. Phish shows (at least not at MSG) have the highest engagement out of any shows I see, but would never see that level of engagement today if someone was lost. Miss the 90s and the lack of technology.
I was drunk at a high school keg party. Some friends were heading up to The Went. I was like Im in!! Left CT at about midnight. Got to Limestone about noon the next day. Great traffic Jam!! Beautiful memories. Didnt hang with the peeps i went with at all. I disappeared for the weekend and met many new Phriends. Thanks Phish!
What makes the peak so great is how Page and Trey find complementary frequency ranges. Page has that rotary speaker sound going, and Trey is right there but letting Page shine through. Brilliant. And of course Mike and Fish are doing everything just exactly perfect, too.
Alpine->Allman Bros in Mpls->Pittsburg->Plattsburg->Went.....one of my best runs of all time, Summer '97. Set II, and especially III, night 1 were spectacular...(Halley's- YES!), but set II, night 2, was indescribable.....this Gin was one of the most transcendent moments of my life/that I've ever been a part of......the unified crowd elation, locked-in with the band's vibe, was absolutely f**kin' NUTS. Thanks so much for the U/L....how, after all of that expelled energy, and straight HOSE, they just keep chuggin' along, building it up, and then stop on-a-dime, trey smokes the Uncle Pen intro, and then just chug right back up to full-throttle, is beyond me. Sh*t's magic, yo.
The last show that I saw with my best friend before he died & we got the 2nd half of Harpua (got the first at The Clifford Ball a year prior) a killer Harry Hood and the best Gin ever! 🙏
The VI IV I progression that changed the entire band. Such a blissful moment led by Mike and instantly caught by everyone. There will never be a better "Gin"!
I lived on the old Loring Air Force Base then, Phish played in my back yard; 1997 The Great Went, 1998 Lemmonwheel, and 2002 or was it 2003 IT - great memories if I remember correctly.
Beautiful country, would have never gone up that way if it weren't for Phish. I can say that about so many places, they aren't just the creators of my favorite music, they also were an excuse to travel this wonderful country many times over

This is absolutely pinnacle Phish. What an amazingly incredible weekend. My first fest. At 20 years old, I was too worried to travel all the way to NY for Clifford. However, a year later, I had a crew with me willing to go for it. So glad we made it.
Went, Wheel and It have melted into each other. So many good memories from all three from the Morning wind and rain storm, the band stopping and turning off all the lights and had the crowd turn to stare at the full moon. Watching the Glider doing loops then landing behind the stage. The glow stick celebration was incredible to experience. Amazing Drum circles late into the night after the show. I can't believe It's been 35 years since my first show in 1987.
06:50- :51 when Trey and Mike both hit the same two notes in a row and Trey was so touched by it and struck he looks over at Mike like " did you just?? Yup, this is goona be the best gin ever"
Pretty sure he was looking at Fishman because Fishman was still staggering the beat still and Trey was looking for Fishman to find a solid foundational beat which he does land on a min or so later... We lived through a renaissance of music. When we look back in 50 or 100 years we will realize it, but right now we are completely blind. Music today just does not compare. Sad how we could fall so far. We took it for granted in the 60s-90s and now we have plain shit compared to this.

Thanks so much for uploading this! This was my second show, first being the night before. I still stand by this being the absolute best Gin that I've heard. There are some that come close. I stopped going to Phish shows in the early 2010s and I believe I was at 50 shows. I know that it isn't many compared to a lot of fans, but it was enough for me. I still go back to UA-cam these days to bring back memories. This weekend in ME meant so much to me... can't believe its been almost 20 years! My older brother still goes to shows and so I look at the setlists that he sees. I'm dreading the day that I look at a setlist and see that they played Lifeboy. Thats the only song that I really would LOVE to see/hear live to get my "Phish closure"
BTW, I LOVE how Trey gets all pissy at Jon in the video at the beginning of the jam, because Jon cant get his shit together. And then they end up pulling off one of the BEST jams ever for Gin! That is what makes it great for me.
I missed the great went due to a family vacation in cape cod but I remember my friend drove up in his Jetta by himself and stopped by to visit us in cape cod on the way back. I agree the 90s Phish shows we're something special. I got to hear life boy in Philly at the Mann in 94 or 95 on acoustic....so great! I had freakin 6th row seats and it is hard to describe the the impact that made on me back then!!
