It should be illegal to put pedals (short of delay or reverb) in front of an amp like a Splawn, or a Soldano, etc... That said, I know you're trying to nail Zach's tone, which you did perfectly. Well done.
The right Boost/Overdrive pedal used correctly in front of any Amp is just an added bonus to the Amps overall tone, feel and response when playing. I'll use the Super Charger on car analogy. Stock Motor is ok, Supercharged Car, Smile for days when you hit that gas/ pedal!
Sounds really good dude but I’m not sure where you get your ideas from presence does not add distortion try that on a clean channel does not add distortion and doubling guitars does not give you a chorus effect It thickens it up, Unless you put one track slightly slower than the other then you’ll get a course effect
You're right about presence on clean, however, on some overdrive circuits it does add distortion to the high end. I learned that from Brian Wampler. I have heard Zakk Wylde talk about using chorus live to replace the effect doubling gives you in the studio. True, it's not the same, but doubling does add width in the studio.
Hey Brad, nice job.. what year is your Splawn.. I have a 2007 just after Scott put the 4 button switch on the amps.. I have found this ERA is very BROWN and a little on the dark side.. very dependant upon speaker selection.. I actually added a bright switch i can toggle on or off.. good for Brown as well as Marshall sizzle.. very versatile amp and VERY TIGHT and articulate.. I hear all my crappy mistakes.. lol.. The chorus is a bit too much for me.. i tend to just use delay to thicken the tone a bit.. but Zakk does run 2 heads in stereo to make things huge.. Gear 2 does have plenty of gain on tap and OD2 adds a gain stage for sure.. some say it is so tight it does not need a boost.. but i like a boost as it adds something else.. I would run Gain on 3 O'clock with an SD-1 on OD-1.. this is a very gritty sound.. but it is fun to play around with.. also love running GEAR 1 OD1 with gain at 11 O'clock for Malcolm Young tones.. and add a clean boost for Angus.. best of both worlds.. great amp.. nice tones.. I will have to play with the presence more.. lol
I believe my splawn is a 2013. I absolutely love the amp and how versatile it is. Plus I live close to splawn amps shop, so if anything goes wrong Scott can fix it quickly.
I've got a 2005 Quickrod and a 2022. Two different animals for sure. Love the bright plexi tone of the 2005. The 2022 has more gain on tap and slightly different fuller voicing. Running them in stereo brings the god of thunder lol 🤘🤘🤘
How in the world would you run your effects loop through a PC and back? I've been playing for 50 years and was a computer programmer for nearly 30 years but that's an insane concept. You should make a clip explaining that sorcery.
@@bradbatchelor_ So the reverb is going through the loop? How does that connect and what about the delay plug-in you mentioned? I'm thinking you mean the reverb is added after the cabinet is miked and any delay is coming from a standard pedal or rack effects through the loop. You still have me confused here.
@RockNRoller66 My signal path is... guitar, tuner, wah, then the input on the amp. In the effects loop is... volume, chorus, and delay. My amp output goes to a two notes torpedo captor (load box). My load box connects to my interface on my computer where I can record to studio one. Inside studio one I add reverb post recording. I can also leave my delay pedal off and use studio one to add delay post recording. I also use two notes software for speaker cabinet emulator. I hope this helps. Thanks for the question.
Thanks for making the video. But this "tone" is not anywhere close to the ZW tone. You have an amp with a chorus in front. This is not a ZW tone. Sorry. you are missing several key parts of the tone. 1) stereo widtth. 2) articulation 3) Depth 4) harmonic content the tone you have is a mildly overdriven rock tone with too much mono chorus in front. You are missing preamp distortion, volume, width, and articulation. Facts are facts. MONO CHORUS is not Zakks tone. ANd you have no SPX 90. With dual amps. Sorry. You just have an overdriven tone with little articulation and WAY TOO MUCH MONO CHORUS.
I've made several recordings and played live with that tone. Lots of people have asked me how I get the ZW tone. With a splawn you don't need an overdrive or preamp pedal in front. BTW the stereo width comes from doubling guitars with no chorus. But everyone's a critic on youtube. Mono chorus is his live sound. Check out his rig rundown on premier guitar. Facts are facts, you're trying to argue where there is no argument.
@@bradbatchelor_ you are wrong. He runs stereo amps. Has since the early Black Label Days. Hence the reason for a CS-5 chorus pedal with stereo outputs. I get it. You think you've got a great tone. And for a mono tone, it's ok. But it sounds nothing like ZAKKS tone. Even if your "friends" tell you it does. Zack continually raves about the SD1 circuit and how it adds nuances to the tone. YOUR tone has WAY TOO MUCH GAIN AND WAY TOO MUCH MONO CHORUS. I've recorded and played with crappy tone as well. Just because YOU played live with a tone and a bunch of uneducated drunks told you "brah, you nailel the tone" does not mean that you have nailed the tone. The bottom line is this: You put a chorus in front of a Splawn. Do you really think that you are the FIRST guy to ever do that? Do you really honestly believe that you have "nailed" his tone? And if so, YOU WOULD BE THE FIRST GUY TO EVER NAIL THAT TONE WITHOUT A YAMAHA SPX 90. In addition to the spatial effect there is also a delay. You missed all that. And yet you posted a video about it!!! ROTFLMAO I can put 2 choruses in front of my Helix and have twice as good a tone as you!!!!!!!!!! Better yet, I can understand what good tone is, what it takes to achieve it and have no need to post a video about it.
You proved my point. You're just here to argue. Earlier you said I didn't have enough overdrive, now you say it's too much. Just move on and pester someone else.
@@bradbatchelor_ Its about gain staging so you don't have to have so much preamp gain and make the tone muddy. That is the secret to good tone. OD1 and TS808 have been used by pros to add stages of gain so you don't have to use all preamp gain. To much or too little gain is the least of your problems. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of tone, Zakk's tone and the whole GD internet. Luckily I understand how it works and I can block your videos. Good riddance you mono chorus fool.

I'm using the effects loop on the amp, but for reverb I'm using plugin software inside my daw. No sorcery. 👍

Splawn’s are killer….I think you achieved Zakk’s tone🤟🏼
Love it!!!! Great tone!!!!
Thanks for the video! Great tone and playing - the Splawn is killer.
