- What would it feel like to get slapped around with the New Caledonian Tree Carrot, #Apiopetalum velutinum? Does Drosera neocaledonica know no bounds? Will Tony cry like a little sissy when it rains on his ass and he realizes he stubbornly refused to bring a tent? What does an #Araucaria muelleri dong look like? Is #Melaleuca dawsonii the finest Myrtaceae on the Island of New Caledonia?
We return to the rust-colored slopes of the mountains of New Caledonia to take a look at what effects a combination of ancient lineages of plants and strange, ultramafic geology have on shaping a plant community on this island in the middle of the South Pacific.
New Caledonia is a fragment of continent that broke off the ancient supercontinent #Gondwana 80 million years ago and was tectonically "set adrift" in the Pacific Ocean, North of New Zealand and East of Australia. Sometime during the Eocene, 50 million years ago, a huge slab of oceanic crust was obducted on top of the land mass, giving it the rich assemblage of #ultramafic rocks and #ophiolites that it has today. These kinds of rocks tend to induce #speciation in plants due to their odd chemistry and lack of nutrients.

Point of interest, I found a Myodocarpus fossil in a Miocene lake deposit in New Zealand. A scientist at Adilade university is writing the paper. New caladonia and New Zealand are part of the same continental fragment so we share a common heritage. By the way you should come to NZ,we got Podocarps,we got Nothofagus, we got more Dracophylums than you can shake a stick at and our alpine flora is to die for.

@Furtive - yep, we got the Heiracium and the Pilosella too. It does form mats in the semi arid areas of the high country South Island. These out-compete native species, as well as introduced pasture grasses.

Not a lot of birds in this biome because the soil is really poor. The plants don't produce much seeds and not many insects to munch on the leaves because they are too tough and poor in nutrition.

Yes, I was there. Flying around with Christ on a golden unicorn. Either that, or ages of rocks are able to be radiometrically dated and geologists are able to calculate the yearly speed at which tectonic plates move, aided by an abundance of geologic clues available at the surface, like putting together clues to a very large puzzle.
Also, check out a tectonic map. A much more importantap than modern geopolitical ones. It will blow your mind.
i’ve been fascinated by the crust since high school. we have a few old rock quarries in the area and coal was also mined here back in the day. the quarries have strata layers with crinoids in abundance, also Haydite is close to the surface. awesome country you are trekking thru.

I play music in the morning for the birds which I feed. they like flute the best. its funny to see them notice a beautiful sound. have fun in that very interesting place and climate. remember sweating is good.

The Agathis was magnificent. I could ponder on that for hours. Tony,how do you explain that in a wet (6' of rains) humid climate,the total lack of epiphytes on all those rough barked trees and shrubs? Not as much as a lichen.
Yeah,that whole forest reminds me of large planters of old plants in fake soils that are depleted..you get that look.Lower branches first to go,plant foliage looks anemic.
Still,I have a Plerandra elegantissima in rich clays,always watered...and it still just has a thick tufted of foliage on long minimal ( no lower branching) branching shrub/tree.

The red soil appears to be a Ferrosol, deep red friable iron rich soils that lack strong texture and structure, usually from decomposed basalt. There are no rapid primary plants evolved to stabilize these soils on New Caledonia and the cause of so much erosion from mining or any disturbance to it.
Wow seems like the concretion is the only thing stopping that hillside from just emptying out into the rivers like an hourglass, like the loess plateau.
