Best wishes for Roberto and his projects. Here another idea for making use of surplus greens - ferment them, and maybe ferment, and then dehydrate for an amazing taste explosion. For John - an idea for a video is a visit with a seed grower for micro green seeds. That is a very important link in the food chain.
Thank you! We pour our heart and soul into our farm and our microgreens. Good point about seeds, as the microgreens industry is highly dependent on seed production. We are actually addressing this by cultivating our own seeds on our 35 acres starting next spring!
I grow broccoli, 5 part salad mix and chinese cabbage mix in my living room in seed starting mix (I soaked the seed starter mix in boiling water to kill bugs). They grow under a Ferry Morse grow light. I grow radish sprouts in a 4 tray seed sprouter kit. And alfalfa sprouts on the window sill. I love them all, especially drizzled with a vinaigrette dressing. ☺🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
For us it's about taking care of our communities. Relationships based on reciprocity: we take care of the plants, and they take care of us, so we can take care of our community.
I did adore your work, John Kohler. You were my first teacher years ago when I lived in an apartment in town. Now I'm 6 years into developing my family's old farm as a permaculture market farm. Your commitment inspires and sustains.
I just love the word fanage 😂 I would argue that a true white light is by its very nature multi-spectrum, but there are clearly different qualities of LED lights available to buy. Great video
Tommyj from Ouroboros Farms in Half Moon Bay. Agreed on the cheap LED lights. We had commercial lights and upgraded to new LEDs in the germination room and it made a huge difference. Don't go cheap on your lights. We just set up a second farm for microgreens, you can see it next time you visit.
I have been watching your videos. Been interested in microgreens. But I was wondering about the havestright. What’s the best things that you freeze dry vegetable wise that you think tastes the best and has the most uses. Things that i can get in grocery or farmers markets
Video lots of very innovative ideas very similar to ones I practice myself. Only one criticism, is that those lights are cheap for a reason. It's not a problem with LED it's a problem with spectrum tuning you can tell visibly Even by the camera that those are not adequate light spectrum for any plants
What a shame these videos don’t get more traction. I think it’s the average 30 sec attention span these days. Oh well, their loss! Thank you for the education!

Hi John. You’re about 2 1/2 hours from Kansas :-) I live on 10 acres that I have tried to grow trees and fruit for years. Totally being destroyed by chemical farming along with my health. You introduced me to micro greens which has made a huge impact on my health over this last year. Would love to hear your thoughts of what you would do With 10 acres of chemical waste land. That you’ve spent 20 years investing every penny you got into?
I'm, a huge fan my mom and dad are 2. I'm in the beginning of doing a project. in my backyard gardening. I live in Austin Texas, also . Learning how to maybe you can UA-cam a DUI in my; bedroom growing your own greens the microgreens. Also want to set up shop I don't know maybe selling your t-shirts.
What ratio of hydrogen peroxide to water are they using to soak and spray the pads? Is that 3% or 35% hydrogen peroxide? I so appreciate this video because its hard to find info on growers using jute mats -- I'm just getting started and am having some issues :(
Haha, I know you were kinda joking John, but I want a husband who can grow the big veggies while I grow the microgreens! No joke 😁 you have to come to Australia 😎 we have Awesome farming here, especially in Byron Bay! 😉👍 kind regards, Mary
is that the tunnel from Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy...John you could jump thru and talk to Deep Thought....he takes even long than you! lol Joke joke ( Thanks for everything John)
Great video thank you! Where does he source his Jute mats? I read alot of bad reviews of Jute in regards to chemical smell etc as most if it comes from India and Jute is used as carpet padding and as automobile insulation etc. I'm interested in using them but am very concerned about them being clean. Thank you John for all your videos. I'm going to kick off in a big way and add microgreens to my current aquaponics growing.

Hi there! We only germinate in the trays, then transfer the pads into our system. We are experimenting with trays with holes on the bottom too and see how they work in the system!
Do a shot everytime John says basically. Bet you'll be drunk with a quickness. Good stuff mang. Thank you. Lights, 6500K Full Spectrum LEDs. Don't buy the cheap Chinese ones. Spend a little more and get the good ones. You get what you pay for is true for lights. Good story, I'm an OH man too.
I wanted to know if you're in the Austin area what is the best possible way to transform a room into a green sustainable waterfall microgreen facility. In making the livingroom a atrium Room.
Hi Keith, we can help! We've consulted for other growers, and it's another way for us to keep learning and developing production models. Hit us up if you want to learn more!
I found the gropal.com website for the low salt minerals but when you click the buy now button it takes you to seaminerals.com and they don't sell the gropal products. Has gropal gone out of business?
In my experience these racks are too far from the light. It will produce leggy microgreens with small tops. I like the overall setup though. On The Grow does something similar in their box truck.
I can't believe he put that mat on his head, FFS! People have to eat that. What a grub. I'd be fucking furious if that was my farm. I've watched three of his videos (not the entire video, they're waaay too long) and this is the third time I've seen him handling the food inappropriately. The other vids he had his hands all through it, like it was someone's hair or something. It's grotty. These people are working their arses off to have clean, enclosed, sanitary grow rooms and he's putting it on his head and running his hands though it. They're kinda enough to let him check out their farms, the least he could do is be respectful and practice proper food hygiene (GAP) handling procedures.

Good idea! So far, the highly reflective insulated metal panels of the greenhouse really help to distribute light throughout. Sometimes the Colorado sun is too intense for the microgreens, and we have to use shade cloth.
Emerald Gardens - Mirrors could also be used to block too much light in one area and evenly distribute it to another. Or it could be directed at solar paneling for energy production.
I really like your videos but I have to say it really turns me off to hear you repeatedly mispronounce coconut coir. It is pronounced KWAR, not coyer. Thank you. Please fix this. I have to turn it off. Bothers my ears and gives the impression you are not well educated and don't know what you are talking about even though I've watched enough of your videos to know you are not. I am sure I am not the only one who has noticed this. Please don't drive your viewers away of this.
i find it hard to believe he moved from ohio to colorado to grow lettuce lmfao probably failed at growing weed first or realized he can't compete in that market. nobody moves to colorado to grow lettuce that's the funniest thing i've heard all week.
I agree with you, it is kind of weird! However, everyone is growing cannabis here, and now traditional farmers are moving to hemp so there is a huge gap in our local food production. And there is also an increasing surplus of cannabis and hemp, but the way we see it, everyone has to eat, but there is no reason why we can grow other things as well.
Best wishes for Roberto and his projects. Here another idea for making use of surplus greens - ferment them, and maybe ferment, and then dehydrate for an amazing taste explosion.

Amazing to see use of technology for sustainability. One of the most inspiring microgreen farmer I have heard from thus far. ❤️
John's one of the few UA-camrs I have to throttle playback speed from 1.5 to 1.25! ;) Love his passion.

what happens to the jute pad after use?
I'm thinking jute mats can be dried and used again. Extra nutrients from the grow before can't hurt.

Why is it lazy? What is the better way for a commercial business? I am asking very respectfully.
