I hit with Jimmy Arias three days in a row at 1993 $50,000 Naples USTA Challenger where I was official tournament stringer, and Jimmy walked into the stringing room and looked at me and said, “Do you want to hit with me?” . . . “Me, uh, ya.” As I carelessly stopped mid weave and immediately and followed Jimmy to the court . He was a complete gentleman and even though I gave him what must have been one of the lamest warmups he’s ever received, said, lAs king as I keep winning, you can keep warming me up,” or something to that effect. I'm bout Arias's age and I remember watching that flailing backhand and marveled at it. I also watched this live and I remember the discussion about how he produced it. Lendl was my favorite at the time tho. I tried to copy both forehand and backhand. Emphasis on tried.
33:45 Only time i've ever seen Lendl uncork a wild fastball. You certainly can see the talent Jimmy Arias had. One of the greatest junior level players ever.
@@sashashaikh111 I think McEnroe said that he found Borg's retirement from the game at the end of 1981 really affected him for a couple of years. Suddenly the person he'd been pursuing and trying to overtake for the past few years was gone. He said it took him a long time to adjust psychologically.
@@zeddeka Great and valid point, but personally i think that was McEnroe's way of paying homage to his favorite/ respected rival and friend, personally i don't believe him, Macs like a shark, all he knows is to keep moving forward, he needed to constantly win to justify himself, I still blame his 82 season for his wooden racquets.
She had a really weird backhand. Seen him play a couple of times. He would often loop a lot of his Backhand down the center of the court with a little control.
Arias couldn’t succeed when graphite rackets took over and increased the speed of the shots. I thought he was going to have a great career based on his early success on the tour.

No doubt he was a great player, but in both 86 and 87 Wimbledon finals he was well and truely outclassed by better grass court players in Becker and Cash.
Mac once said he had more talent in his little finger than Lendl had in his whole body/something like that as I recall/...that might be true ,but Lendl had more tennisIQ than the rest of the field altogether...
This match was so one-sided. Felt like Lendl was taking it a little easy and conserving his effort for the Finals. Arias had the atomic forehand, but Lendl was so much more a complete player, except for serve and volleying.
Maybe the last year you would see both players using "standard" sized rackets. If I remember right, Lendl's Adidas racket had a smaller than standard size. Arias probably was a trailblazer with a very modern "windshield wiper" forehand.
Interviewer to Lendl: How do you like your chances against Arias? Ivan: I'm not Yentl. If Arias is an Aquarius ♒, I will send ass back to his astrologist.
Tennis viewing was better in the 80s. I mean looks at these zoom ins to the players, the camera is close to the action. Now you get cameras seated in the 105th row with an aerial shot. I mean WTF, things are supposed to get better with age, not worse.
Ivan has so much better technical strokes....Arias very wristy and loopy...that backhand is hit off the back foot and falls short a lot... Agassi comes along and shows how to hit threw the ball...

Tony, Pat, and Newk - my favorite broadcast team!
Mine too. Easily the best broadcast team ever!
i would rather watch this than todays tennis -
@@matthewstylianou8363 Tony and Pat were great together. I liked Donald Dell too.
Met Arias last week at IMG Academy and looks the same almost 30 some years later.

Agreed, just wish he had switched to graphite racquets prior 83 season.......I still blame McEnroe's 82 season for the same reason.
One thing, I could never understand Arias's backhand follow-through, never rated Bollettieri as much of a technical coach !!

Loved his Bjorn like forehand
Lendl was a such a "heavyweight" of a player. He just clubbed it with great balance and precision.
What a backhand Arias had. Lovely to watch
His backhand was clearly his weakness!
She had a really weird backhand. Seen him play a couple of times. He would often loop a lot of his Backhand down the center of the court with a little control.
biggest key match moment. arias with triple set point at 5-4 in the second and not being able to pull it out.
Magic ! Thanks a lot !
Adidas GTX Pro vs Donnay Borg Pro
Such a great match!! Thank you for the upload! :)
In 1983 arias is playing with a wooden racquet?
So was Chris Evert.....
@Matthew Park mac had switched to his max200g in early 84
