In the early 90th I was an exchange student in Shanghai. When I left back home my girlfrind then gave me a tape with that song as sweet memory.... Now we are married with a 17 year old daughter. Hearing this song after a long time was very very touchy. Thank you so much Yangyang!!!
I remember learning this back in 2013 while living in Nanjing. It became, for us foreigners living there, our mantra. Ended up singing it at my Chinese friend's wedding last year in Suzhou. (:
Yup, this is a very popular wedding song not only in China but also in many Chinese communities in Asia. I had a friend was made to sing this song to his bride during his wedding dinner and he needs friends to show him the lyrics!
I grew up listening to this song. Thank you so much Yang Yang! I love the way you teach mandarin. Your approach is easy to understand and fun. Please do more "Learn Chinese Through Songs" videos.
I have been teaching myself Mandarin for 4 months. Initially with phone apps then I discovered UA-cam. I’ve perused many of the “teachers” and they’re all talented and very helpful but with these singing videos you have moved to the top of my favourites list. I’m a retired singer and this method works brilliantly for me. Thank you so much. 👍
Omg, yeah. This song is really popular time to time. Since i was a kid until now i keep listening to this song when there's something like a Chinese festival or a Chinese wedding party

The song that have ever hooked to; for at least 3 years now... though I understood not a words all these days. Teresa Teng! --- My another favourite one is 邓丽君 - 但愿人长久
This is the first time whatever i have listened. I understood how sweet is love. It is really necessary and it should be been among every body. Best wish go ahead.
I have learned 6 languages almost uniquely with the songs and want to make chinese the 8th language that i speak. i know that there is the tonality issue but there is no quicker way to internalise vocab and sentence structure than with songs. besides tonality chinese songs is difficult to understand for beginners, elementary students. my sincere recommendation is Wai+Mian+De+Shi+Jie++Cyhi+Chin and Beijing Beijing - Wang Feng. thank you for making me fall in love with chinese a little bit more!
You are a fantastic teacher. Talented and skilled in the language and making learning seem fun and easy. Thank you so much for this lesson. Please continue to teach us more songs, especially Teresa Teng's.
I went to a marriage, my family was the boy's side and the girl was chinese. So we made a traditional chinese marriage. We had the tea ceremony and all of that.. It was very interesting. And they danced, and the girl sang this song, It was beautiful 😍

The first song I learned in Chinese. Good memories.
As YoYoChinese is also about in-depth study, I want to propose two different translations:
几分 - this is a very specific way of asking for “how much”, like asking for a specific number. So the whole first two lines I would translate as “You ask me how much I love you and you ask me to be specific about why I think that”. For the asker it’s a very serious question and shouldn’t be taken lightly by the singer.
月亮代表我的心 - we always translate this as if “my love is similar to the moon light”, ie, it’s clear and white. But I think there’s another idea as well. The moon period is also the basis for months, ie for time. So it can also be seen as “time will proof my honest intentions”, or “let’s take our time, you don’t have to trust me right away”. And a little further even, I’m not sure if 代表 can be in some poetic way also be interpreted as “observing” or “bringing to light”, but the moon light itself is quite often present, when nobody else is watching and we are our true selfs, especially as lovers. So maybe it also means having the moon keep us accountable, even when nobody else is watching.
