Shankar Shanmugam (born 17 August 1963), credited as S. Shankar or his mononym Shankar, is an Indian filmmaker who predominantly works in Tamil cinema. He made his debut as a director in the film Gentleman (1993), for which he won the Filmfare Best Director Award and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Director. He is one of the highest paid film directors of India,[2] particularly known for extensive use of visual effects, prosthetic makeup and state-of-art technology in songs.
Shankar's films typically deal with the contemporary social issues and vigilante themes. He usually collaborates with composer A. R. Rahman, both having done over 10 films together. Two of his films, Indian (1996) and Jeans (1998), were submitted by India for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by M. G. R. University. His movie 2.0 (2018) is the fourth highest-grossing film in India and is the sixth highest-grossing Indian film worldwide.

We are Telugu people but we r really proud of SHANKAR SIR 🙏🙏🙏
I also became his fan after watching Anniyan, Aparichit(in Hindi) and Aparichitudu(in Telugu). Such a visionary and a creative person. But In UA-cam, you will find many videos against him and people abusing him saying that he glorifies upper caste in his movie and show them as hero and innocent. He promotes casteism and they don't have any other valid arguments. Still I couldn't understand that just because of showing Brahmins as hero how can someone call him casteist just because of it.🤔🤔 Do you also feel the same ?? If one or two people said so then I could understand that some people just have problem with everything but there are many people saying so that's why.🤔🤔

I am from Malaysia and been a fan of this man since his first film.
His secret of success is DETAILING and he never neglects any of his technicians. He will have many discussions with crews and casts to set some expectations. Agreed, it is not easy to work with him but trust me you can go far if be in his team.
His strongest pillar is A.R.Rahman, which in this video you get goosebumps in every shot.
Personally, we can divide Shankar into 2 categories, before Sivaji, and after Sivaji. Before Sivaji, Shankar more focused on the script demand which he makes a film based on the original story. No additional commercial elements. After Sivaji, Shankar took a revolution where he becomes a mass director, he brings his experience working with Rajinikanth and adapts to his films like "I", Endhiran, and 2.0. This somewhat worked for Sivaji but turned bad for "I" and 2.0 where mass elements are not needed.
Honestly, we all prefer Shankar's authentic work in Indian, Anniyan & Mudhalvan, hopefully, for Indian 2, we can see the old Shankar.
Nevertheless, he is the only director that collected 100cror in all his films.
He is legend ever... And still nobody can replace him...
