James, I hope you see this. I love you, I support you! I can’t imagine how you must be feeling. You are an excellent actor. Praying for you. Take care of yourself! Much love ❤️
I think the final response was brutal and epic! Attacking the variability argument by pointing out that the person who doesn't experience the sourness of limes has defective senses. Great parting shot. 10/10
I think the evaluation of something as "beautiful" is a process of thought. We have these internalized, subconscious, standards of what we personally view as "beautiful" and our mind methodically, yet, subconsciously, goes down that list of standards to determine whether or not we'll choose to view something as beautiful. I think attraction to physical beauty is a similar process. The mind follows the same list it does as it evaluates a person/thing's physical attributes, but, then it goes a step further to release a chemical in the mind to form a superficial bond. I think the mind follows a separate path that is completely independent of the determination of beauty when it evaluates whether or not it finds another person to be emotionally attractive. I also think it uses a different list to decide whether or not another being is emotionally attractive. When a mind considers whether or not another being is emotionally attractive, it can often disregard the subject's physical attributes and instead focuses on shared interests, compatible personality traits, similar life experience, and whether or not it finds the other person's mind to be challenging. When our mind concludes that another individual meets a minimum standard against its emotional list, it releases chemicals that can be even more potent than the ones that are released by physical attraction. This subconscious action of the mind then encourages the conscious mind to pursue the object of its affection; thereby ensuring the continuation of our species.
Not bad. I wish you guys would have touched on subjects that appear to have universal beauty regardless of culture, time period etc. like nature (mountain ranges, a tropical oasis)
You should look up Ken Kniselys' philosophy show "No Dogs or Philosophers Allowed", it was a great show and I'm almost certain that he had an episode on 'Beauty' as well. Good job guys.
Beauty comes from complexity and quantity of permutations from cultural context and can be thought of the virtue between the excess and defect of something. *What about simple things and unique things?* These are beautiful none the less. In the same manner, they are in relationship of that which is everything to all of what the proclaimer of beauty has observed. So either in context, and instance. Beautiful nature is something all observers over time can come to.

This channel is a great idea! The truth is born in dialogue ^^ It will be interesting to hear how James determines "art" today (in a global sense). Does art (term) have borders in his opinion?
Artist is skilled in getting you to buy something as beautiful/moving. Eccentric attraction, perversity, is less likely to be beautiful. (Though much what is culturally verboten can have at the unconscious level powerful beauty in a normal person.) There might be something objective about beauty (many things), though perhaps seldom absolute. It is transient and zone specific in human perception. Over here in the lab we're trying to get to AGI through aesthetic appreciation based on the stylization of instinctive drives. We have to run simulacra of modifiable instinctive drives and associative pairings. This is what we do when we write at WWC.
I'm very interested in this channel, but is very difficult for me follow the discussion. Can you insert down the video english subtitles? It could be more easy for me and for everyone.Thank you very much for your job :)Caterina
Whoooo!!! Another philosophy channel on UA-cam :-)! I'm really loving this so far. You guys should try to get Daniel Dennett on the show. Also, for those that are looking for more philosophy vids on UA-cam, I just started my philosophy channel not too long ago. Feel free to check it out! -Philosophermit
Why is taste a secondary experience? Is beauty only through sight. What about the other senses. Why are we talking about beauty only in relationship to sight?
because when we talk about beauty it's something superficial. The idea of beauty now is not the former idea of beauty. When you look at something you say: It's beautiful. U don't say an animal, a landscape or a sunset is beautiful if you don't SEE its beauty. The inner beauty concept is just a way we human beings try to deal with superficiality, imo.
Fashion, ads, magazines promote a bunch of esthetic codes to which a certain amount of the population respond for multiple reasons. The ultimate goal is to sell a dream, a creation, or to sell products. Whether people are naturally anxious to feel reassured, validated or are filled with insecurities, whether they feel beauty standards are to be followed in order to gain popularity and to access certain things in life, they might see it as something fun… multiple reasons… The mainstream idea of beauty largely promoted, if you respond to its codes and follow them, sometimes acts as a free pass to a few privileges, it frequently matters in certain professional fields, socially, it can superficially give the impression of being the magic wand that’s going to counteract feelings of loneliness because beauty attracts, it’s largely perceived as engaging, attractive, a bonus, something extra, the cherry on top of the cake. The personal, individual idea of physical beauty, if one is not particularly susceptible to subscribe to the mainstream idea of what’s attractive and not attractive, varies throughout life, is malleable, varies from one person to another. Nobody is bound to find an almost symetrical face, a flat stomach, thin long legs, blue eyes, long lashes, more attractive than a small, not so symetrical face, voluminous body… it shifts throughout life. If you are repeatedly exposed to theories and representations of what personifies a certain kind of beauty, it can influence the way you perceive beauty a great deal and direct it in certain directions more than others. Furthermore, even though sight plays a good part in the attraction, the way we perceive someone as beautiful is not strictly limited by one of our senses only, sometimes hearing/the sound comes into play. We can be attracted by the vibrations of somebody’s voice, the tone, the way that person sounds as he or she speaks to us. We can be attracted to the special way one touches us. All those things intertwined can get you to perceive one person as beautiful because it makes you see the person as a whole, and not as a sum of esthetic traits. Beauty does influence, not always, not systematically, but it does influence the way people interact with each other. It sometimes even determines for how long you are willing to interact with or how pleasant you will be to someone who asks you for simple directions/for a damn lighter (etc). It even increases/maximizes your endurance to annoying traits of personnality that you very quickly classify as « manageable » … because she/he looks beautiful. Voilà. Sorry if some of the sentences I typed seem incorrect in their structure. I’m french. English isn’t my mother tongue and we french people talk a lot with overly convoluted words that sometimes are a tiny bit difficult to translate.
Mmmm go to Coursera.org and enroll in a Philosophy courses. They are really good...or follow The School of Life channel here. I don't saying this video isn't good, but there's great people doing channels and courses about same topics even better. Anyways, thanks James for this project.
Was this just a more verbose way to say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder? Beauty is subjective, even to the individual over time? So, something is only beautiful, or has beauty, if the moment I experience it, I deem it to be beautiful?
so to perceive something as beautiful says more about you, the beholder, than it does about the subject? what does that say about someone who finds the life at large beautiful? compared to someone who doesn't...?
Oh i like james ! I lové reading philosophy and littérature but i m french so i d ont understand everything ! I often ask my mself what is beauty Ps james if you read this i would lové to meet you
Just listen to your heart and it will tell you what is beautiful and what is not. Unfortunately, not everyone can hear his or her heart and soul. Lots of sex, drugs, money lead to depression. Depression is when your heart is silent.
I love you so much James😍😭😭 You are my favourite actor. My dream is meet you😍😭. I'm trying...but I live in Portugal, I'm portuguese but I have an obcession for you😍😭😭 I'm just 12 years old but you are so fucking perfect😍😍😭😭I realy want meet you😭❤
You can't call people who don't taste sour "wrong" but yet their taste-related opinions are worthless? How isn't that them being wrong? Their sensory data are incomplete and they are making decisions on those data. That means they objectively have less competence to judge on taste. Same with beauty. Just because you don't know how to appreciate a certain style doesn't mean your dismissal of it's beauty is valid. In my experience of knowing a lot of musicians, the more talented they are, the less they care about the genre of music in relation to forming an opinion on its quality. This maps perfectly onto the worldview that beauty is objective and people are differently abled to sense it. How does this relativist perspective Andy Egan is putting out there handle psychedelics? If someone sees houses breathing is there no way to say that's wrong either?
Goths don't always look goth. Iol. Chemicals attract people. Scents are something linked to olfactory. It keeps us from fucking our closests relatives. I love LIMES!
So Franco sour face is the standard of beauty, yet changing our perception of lime makes him less beautiful, or being different to the original standard makes him all the more beautiful. Philosophically screwed!
lol, they have to just get over their sour faces and continue making the video. I bet there was a second or two edited out where they were like, 'Okay, I have to drink some water to get this lime juice out of my mouth' or 'OMG! That was horrible! Why did you make me eat lime during the video?!'
This is the channel i've been dreaming of
I love this channel so much already
This is the most perfect, intresting and satisfying channel ever.
Please make more videos, they're the freakin greatest James.
"I love limes... I was such a fool before."
Is anybody else wondering who the heck this Eliot guy is and why he just sits there silent?
James' boyfriend
Blaze Strawn he is an English philosophy professor
clo iski and why he sits there silent, not contributing anything? At least in the first 2 episodes
Wow! Listening to interesting interviews and the bonus of watching James Franco?? Sign me up 😉
James, I hope you see this. I love you, I support you! I can’t imagine how you must be feeling. You are an excellent actor. Praying for you. Take care of yourself! Much love ❤️
James Franco, This is one definition of the beauty !.
I think the final response was brutal and epic! Attacking the variability argument by pointing out that the person who doesn't experience the sourness of limes has defective senses. Great parting shot. 10/10
It is not just about dominant cultures, but about evolutionary history and its impact in our behaviour and mate selection criteria.
Hi James I'm really enjoying these. Keep them coming. Love seeing you!
Thank you Sonj!
James Franco you made my day! ♥️ you!
I love james, i love philosophy and, probably, will end up loving Eliot too. Congrats, guys!
Brunella Nunes Thank you dear
Finding something beautiful is how it makes a person feel. Philosophy takes a simple concept and beats the shit out of it.
this series is basically an editorialized 'waking life' without the animation. i like
Richard Feynmen had the perfect speech about beauty.
Wow need more please!!
Great James, I'm gonna watch all the vidéo of this channel and hopes that this will be a good time investment ha ! :)
Food Trippin!! I have always wanted to do that but also this is a terrific lesson in Subjectivity and Aesthetics.

The argument seemed to me to be one that beauty is a primary quality of things; that is, its beautiful objectively so,
Get me on, m8.
Beauty is independent of observation. A Hawaiian sunset is beautiful even if no one watches it. Beauty exists outside of consciousness.

Too short to be honest.
oh hi Mark
Why color is in the group with taste as the 2nd type of quality? I find it more logical for color to be with volume, size, etc. in the visual group :/
some people have problems seeing certain hues maybe this is why then there is the whole colour blind thing.
