That point about how metaphors can be better descriptors because they evoke specific emotional responses I think is really interesting. I feel like in certain situations and especially when writing, being able to make the reader or person you're talking to think about specific memory they had can be a super powerful tool. Good stuff keep up what you're doing
And as Liz said in the video, shared context is key in attempting to evoke a specific memory in another person. For instance, my husband once described me as a "relic". My mind immediately conjured an image of the withered hand of a long dead saint slowly decaying in a cold stone sepulchre in the damp catacombs underneath the ruins of a forgotten monastery. Needless to say, that wasn't a pleasant thought and I took offense. At which point, he quickly explained that he was actually thinking of something precious beneath a glass display in a museum. So, of course, my mind brought up a picture of a withered mummy's body suffering the indignity of a slow public disintegration for an attempt to amuse bored teens into feeling a connection with discarded history. Then my husband, in a state of repulsion from the mental images I described, a state of shock that my mind would even keep such thoughts on file, and exasperation at my mind's resistance to recalling something pleasant, explained that he meant something like the crown jewels of England. In my husband's mind, a relic is a revered item from the past that is preserved and displayed for posterity. In my mind, a relic is something that has fallen into such obsolescence that it's decomposing. If a person wants to communicate evoke a certain feeling in his/her audience, s/he needs to know his/her listener(s) well enough to use the language that would recall the intended image and emotion. In my husband's case, he could have used the words "National Treasure" to describe me, and my mind would have jumped to The Bill of Rights or The Declaration of Independence. But I still would have been offended. I mean, who wants to be a once-loved, but now seldom considered, item presented before a disinterested party?
James, Elliot, please don't stop making this videos. Please, this is a great idea, and u are developing great. Kisses and all my support from Argentina, with love, Cami...
A metaphor is like not comparing what something is like by saying what it is like, but by saying what is alike by not saying is like. Damn, how hard is it.
'a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable' - i just saved you 5.34 of you life
Metaphors reflect how we think, not just how we speak. Her first premise that we don't really mean what we say when we use metaphors is inaccurate. We mean it because it is how we make sense of things. When I said above that metaphors "reflect" how we think I meant it, because the metaphor that knowing is seeing is embedded into our ways of thinking about knowing. "See" what I mean?
Metaphor helps to communicate ideas without limiting them to the encumbrances of specific definition. This is why poetry can be so effective in delivery subtleties. Pointing towards something rather than defining sharply. One may argue that there is safety in vague speech; but in the context of philosophical discourse, beware of walled ideas and the limits of language.
I believe that metaphor can be effective because it "speaks" to our more primitive neurological structures-those that operate primarily with emotional communication/intelligence.
Would be perfect if they included subtitles for those who also speak Spanish because there are terms that I can not fully understand. Congratulations on this initiative.
She lost it when she said even if they taste the wine they may not have the same taste as you do. If that is a worry, then how could any metaphor be better? I mean how could you trust what is being used in the metaphor is exactly the same?
Ezra Ch:9 you can't unless you have justification for believing that in the context of your speech others will understand the metaphor in the same way you are intending it to be understood. Certainty of that is useless. But I think that is where her pause comes in, because of W.V.O. Quine's bunny situation and the Arguments for skepticism.
How does a metaphor refer to philosophy? I'm a doctor of philosophical sciences in Russia and do not understand what you're talking about, can your channel be about linguistics?
Seriuous Mult it's all philsophy in the fields of practical epistemology, philosophy of language, and philosophy of mind; how one uses tools of language to derive the warrant for their beliefs into packets of information for other minds to receive that, apart from the context, would be nonsense bits of information. Dr. Camp is talking about her work on perspectivical imagination which tries to answer why our minds are hardwired to do metaphor or context dependant justification, and what practices we can further develop in understanding this process, in order to utilize our minds more fully in different situations.
i like the comments calling mary stupid i guess intelligence ends with the individual holding it seems nobody wants to share mary philosophy isnt twisting thing until theyre overly complex its opening up a situation, event, believe, emotion, etc and trying to understand the complexity that lies within itself unfortunately the human language can only express a certain amount of complexity and so most struggle to simplify the things were all thinking thats where philosophers come in
"I learned a lot", I usually say that when a. Shit does not make sense b. I heard someone speak but did not pay attention to them and c. When I want someone to stfu. I also throw the "that was great"- wait, kind of like a metaphor- I say one thing but mean something else! Lol

So is franco stoned for the whole series or only for a few seconds at a time like at 3:52?
I think he's been high since pineapple express lol
Apparently he doesn't smoke at all actually. Sleep deprived perhaps, wouldn't be surprised.
I think James just looks like that. He also speaks with a lisp.
An Apple A Day only a smart person can act like an idiot haha ;)
he's just trying not to fall asleep
I really enjoyed this thank you for sharing. Will be watching the rest of this series. Hopefully the audio gets better. Props :)

Love these videos!
Oh hi mark
'a figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable' - i just saved you 5.34 of you life
"Let's just say I might give him something special with my hand."
Is that a metaphor?
No it isn't but to relate the action of that "something special" to something else that uses the same motion would be a metaphor.

Where's the penned graphic layer for 5:10?
This is great.

man James Franco just doesn't stop surprising me with his wonderful mind
Great video , keep up the good work !
Keep it up! Aaaaaand...subscribed.
omg she's SO BEAUTIFUL! the way she moves her head is MESMERIZING!
"make your singing like marzipan."
but isn't that then a simile, and not a metaphor? or can it pass as both?
why didn't you make more videos??!!!
Memes are somewhat metaphorical in the sense that they can be better at evoking a specific emotional response.
I love this
hey you had something great going! How come you stop posting videos????
I believe that metaphor can be effective because it "speaks" to our more primitive neurological structures-those that operate primarily with emotional communication/intelligence.
Banana? Purple?
Steven Larson banana?
the metaphor is everything that is not strictly pragmatic, which is 95% of our speech
Keen on future episodes
Est-il possible d'avoir des sous-titres en Français?
She is incredibly beautiful and enthralling
Would be perfect if they included subtitles for those who also speak Spanish because there are terms that I can not fully understand.
Congratulations on this initiative.
Maybe people gravitated to one another because their taste buds were the same and they could understand each other's metaphor.
If I was there I would also have sit there like Eliot.
I Love u James
Metaphor in use: Bob and Joe had a debate and Bob steamrolled right over Joe.
great!!!💕
Let's go ahead and work on the sound for the next video, mkay?

Right? Right? Right!? Right?!! Right!?!? Right!!!??? RIGHT?!
Зачем Толяну еще один канал? И почему он не ест?

people acting dumb are often very intelligent which is also a metaphor
Love how James is high AF
woah dude... cool.
the "book smarts" guy is there to hold a book and look smart.
i cant watch James Franco without thinking he is 10 time higher then i am. and im always high lol. pineapple express has clouded my view of him.
Каналами популярных американских актёров интересуются только немногие в США и кто-нибудь из России?)
here's a metaphor -- "that camerawork is garbage"

This is a beautiful premise, Dr. Franco. Please inject it directly into my retinas so I can watch a frame of it every time I close my eyes.
О. Видео от Толяна подъехало
i swear philosophy is just 'take a simple idea/thing twist it till its fucking diffucult to understand'
For you.
I think math is just taking numbers and making equations
Mary Kate lmao maybe to a narrow minded individual but not to horizon wide minds
i like the comments calling mary stupid
i guess intelligence ends with the individual holding it seems nobody wants to share
mary philosophy isnt twisting thing until theyre overly complex its opening up a situation, event, believe, emotion, etc and trying to understand the complexity that lies within itself
unfortunately the human language can only express a certain amount of complexity and so most struggle to simplify the things were all thinking
thats where philosophers come in
Te amo
Strange but very informative
You need to make the translation in spanish please.
Qui est là grâce a Hitek ?
get a GD mic with wind protection
Q: "What's a metaphor?"
A: "Feedin' cows."
;^) Sorry about that.
Subtitles please, in Russia, too, are watching)
Welcome to our school then =)
O, Hi Mark!
She does a great job making her voice and mannerisms like a 55-year-old woman's. Especially the all-important vocal fry.
The idea behind those videos is pretty cool but, trying to make philosophical notions understandable in 5 minutes is really ambitious..
Eliot the mouse 😉
"I learned a lot", I usually say that when a. Shit does not make sense b. I heard someone speak but did not pay attention to them and c. When I want someone to stfu. I also throw the "that was great"- wait, kind of like a metaphor- I say one thing but mean something else! Lol
Eliot. . .stop looking at that man like that - it looks (metaphorically) like you want to wear his skin.
A metaphor is like a simile but less of a metonymy.
Haha a simple definition of metaphore can be : a comparison without any comparison tool. She is not clear at all !
Кек лол Арбидол
Интересно, хоть кто-то полез в переводчик это переводить? Привет от geek empire)
why the fuck is phil on the show?
Dr. Affirmative Action doesn't know the difference between metaphor and simile.
Dude philosophy lmao

SMH!
yawn... that professor surely puts her farts in a jar to smell them later and analyse it like wine.
Ok, sorry Patrick Halfman
she probably doesnt shes a language professor not a flatulent taxologist :)
Stupid is as stupid does. I actually watched this whole video which was a stupid thing to do & now I'm even dumber for doing it.
