- Ah yes, time to play the game that every kid thought was going to be a pet-raising simulator and turned out to be... whatever this is instead.
Why wasn't this game just titled "The Kitten and the Magic Hat" worldwide?

This is a Let's Play of Petz Catz 2/Petz Dogz 2 (known as Catz/Dogz in PAL regions and The Kitten and the Magic Hat/The Puppy and the Magic Hat in Japan), an an action/adventure/puzzle game that came out in 2007 for the Playstation 2 and Wii. In Petz Catz 2/Petz Dogz 2, you assume the role of a young cat or dog living in a small town known as Pawville on a small island in the middle of the ocean. Your family protects a powerful artifact known as The Magic Hat, which is capable of a large variety of things (the game basically makes up its abilities as it goes on). Early on in the game, you are informed by your friend Victor that a dangerous prisoner known as Ivlet has been captured and is being held on the island, and for some reason Victor really wants to meet him? When the two head over to Ivlet he tricks them into giving him The Magic Hat, and then proceeds to destroy Pawville. The remainder of the game is spent doing tedious chores for the ungrateful denizens of Pawville with the "good half" of the Magic Hat known as Beat as the player wonders why this couldn't have just been a simple pet-raising simulator instead of a really bad Zelda rip-off.
There are borderline no differences between the PS2 and Wii versions of this game, with the biggest one being that the PS2 version has a much more intuitive control scheme while the Wii version has widescreen support. Since widescreen will look better in a video, we opted to play the Wii version instead, thus increasing our suffering with this game. The differences between the Catz and Dogz versions are even more minor, with the main difference being that the characters have different names and models. In this Let's Play, we will be 100% completing this game, including doing every sidequest (Maria's Fishing Quest, Charles's Golden Angler, and the Special Fruits/Special Vegetables quests) as well as obtaining one of every collectible (consisting of every Fish, Flower, Insect, and Fruit/Vegetable), completely filling out the Magic Encyclopedia in the process.
In this episode of Let's Play Petz Catz 2/Petz Dogz 2, we create our character (Manzerp Igle) and begin our "adventure", meeting our parents Ione and Arvin, and seeing Ivlet with Victor. We then head over to Dolphin Coast to get our tutorials for walking (yes, walking - it's actually really confusing due to this game's bafflingly bad control scheme), sniffing and digging, fishing, and catching.
I used to play this game when I was a kid. I really enjoyed it.
*i still dont understand why i have to be left in jail i would gladly join in on adventures*
Victor, you have a prison fetish and you know it. Now enjoy it like the naughty boy you are!
I would always visit you, Victor. I thought you were in love with Ada.
Honestly I always loved this game, even now--it's chaotic but somehow charming in it's weird chaotic way. I do think the characters are cute--though, I like uncanny personally. It makes me wonder if I should try out The Dog Island, since people keep talking about how it's like this but better.
The Dog Island has a lot more heart but it's still not a great game IMO. Definitely better than this trainwreck, but no masterpiece either.
I typed in 'Cat needs to get back a magic hat game' good lord.
Yeah, this game's certainly out there :P
The graphics of the game are weird because everything looks like a reused asset from THE DOG Island that they changed slightly to be more realistic.
Yeah, I would agree with this. I think The Dog Island looked a lot better graphically.
YO THIS IS MY CHILDHOOD-
This game was surprisingly common for kids, it seems.
@@GhabulousGhoti I was into cats when I was like 4, plus it was the first ever video game I played
My god this game I don't know how to describe it oh my god lol. The graphics, the story dear lord .
This game is such a beautiful disaster. It never fails to impress with how absurd and how terrible it is.
@@GhabulousGhoti I know the petz dogz game was amazing though.
You mean the one that's just this game with dogs or one of the actual pet-raising simulators? Because those are very different games with the same name :P
@@GhabulousGhoti it makes so much more sense if you play the dogs version, but oh well. I actually enjoyed the dogs version as a kid. The animations make absolutely no sense with cats though.
@@retsaMoN The animations would work better but the rest of the game would still be shovelware sadly :(
Oh Christ this nonsense was my childhood, how did I think this was a good game. Like it's hitting a nostalgia thing but at the same time god why.
Kids have low standards. Believe me, as a kid, I loved my fair share of shitty games too. Then I revisit them as an adult and start to question what was wrong with my younger self :P
I love how half of the recommended videos are kids' videos like nursery rhymes. Nice work, algorithm. That said...why is the player character naked compared to all the other cats on the island? He feels out of place lmao
It should be recommending adventure games like Zelda and such. Ah well.
I would assume that Manzerp is naked because his parents are afraid he'll accidentally strangle himself trying to put a shirt on. He's quite slow, after all.
It seems like a lot of small let's play channels get churned-out kids' videos in the recommendations.
@@NitroIndigo It's that Elsagate crap. Creeps me right out! :P
me: playing Petz Catz 2 while doing a stuffed animal line in which each stuffed animal takes turns fishing in the game, drinking water from a cup, and watching a video on the iPad because life is sad and I’m pretending I’m 5 again to avoid my problems
Also me: chooses video filled with cursing talking about how terrible (yet enjoyable) this game is
We're all just looking for an escape from life right now...
This game is so bad but I have fond memories of playing it when I was younger. Voicing the characters was always one of my favorite things. Although, two things that REALLY get under my skin are the Rainbow FISH (seriously fuck that sidequest) and the fact that they didn't even bother having anything else after the boss fight. Like, no, I wanna continue playing the game after the boss fight...I don't want to have to keep doing the boss fight. Let me finish my sidequests, darn you. >:(
Voicing the characters is pretty fun, I definitely agree :P
Can't believe this was two years ago now....the day my little Manzerp came into my life 😭😭😭
I used to fricking LOVE this game. Legendary. Still would play it 11/10
I used to owned Petz Catz 2 and Petz Dogz 2 and I also used to owned the DS version of Petz Dogz 2 as well
I think I have the DS version somewhere in my collection.
@@GhabulousGhoti the DS version is obviously the best version because it's a pet simulator
At least the dogs in Dog Island have ACTUAL DOG TEETH
The Dog Island is a better game all around. I wouldn't call it great but it's playable which is more than I can say about this mess.
My cat is fascinated by this
Lol, hope they enjoy!
i remember watching this series as it came out two years ago, back at it again to binge. hope you're both doing well:)
Two years ago? Time sure flies when you're stressed as hell and constantly overwhelmed! :P
We've both been doing well, the channel's still kicking and we're about to begin a whole new era. Welcome back!
I will forever love this game 😔 I remember playing this with my sister when we were younger
Hey, there's nothing wrong with that! Nostalgia is a powerful thing!
i cant believe this was posted last year and ive been looking for like a good lets play of this. cant wait to binge this :>
Hope you enjoy!
AAAA I remember watching your review videos on this game several months or a year or so back. It’d always been a very dear game to me that I played a lot (i just finished a Let’s Play of it in July last year, which isn’t too long ago compared to the fact my channel is nearing 8 years old and I’ve been playing Petz Dogz/Catz 2 for like 7 years and THE DOG Island for like 9). I still love it and (although not recently) have written some stories on some other parts of the game/prequels/sequels, and in the last couple years those writings have had a focus on trying to fix up some of the plotholes haha. But when I watched that video, despite my staunch support of the game i found myself agreeing with *a lot* of what you said. And the amount of plot holes/lapses in logic i pointed out in my 2017-2018 let’s play i pointed out was tremendous. Still love the game, but that’s like 90% because nostalgia, and the rest is mostly because i’m just a sucker for animal games and don’t have super high standards (like i nitpick stuff a lot, but it usually doesn’t interfere with my enjoyment).
Whoops that got kinda long, but point is when I saw just a couple days ago that you actually made a Let’s Play on this game I got really excited haha. Will be binging this whenever i get the time!
(-i was always wishing more that you’d do a THE DOG Island walkthrough, which i love a lot more, but i saw another comment here where you said you weren’t doing any more LPs except some exceptions and that there wasn’t much to talk about. I’d probably argue with the not much to talk about part, the doctor’s love hecking DIED before the game and there’s that dating mission and Francis thought she killed her friend... a ha ha that’s the game i’ve grown up with that i’ve been playing since I was 5 or 6...)
I think I actually remember you commenting on my review a while back - your username looks familiar.
Regardless, I'm glad you see with what I was saying in the review. As I always tell people, they're allowed to enjoy the game as much as they want, but a lot of my criticisms were fairly objective. Someone can both enjoy Petz Catz 2 and still acknowledge the game's issues :P
As for Dog Island, while I certainly see what you are saying, keep in mind that I cannot fill up an entire LP by just talking about a few odd points. There's a LOT of downtime in The Dog Island where the player is just running around. I will stand by that The Dog Island is a significantly better game than Petz Catz 2, but it lands in this awkward middle zone where it's not really good enough for me to enjoy, but not bad enough to be the butt of jokes like Petz Catz 2 is. I might LP the game one day, but at the very least I'm just not interested in doing more LPs in the near future. I'd much rather make more reviews instead!
Anyways, I hope you enjoy this LP! We're pretty harsh on the game, but it was still a fun series to make!
Oh man, I remember buying the dog version for PS2 as a kid thinking it was a Nintendogs style virtual pet game. I was shocked when I started playing and there was a cutscene and story started happening 😄 I ended up enjoying it a lot though and played it multiple times so money well spent.
I really hate how misleading this game's packaging is, that's probably the thing that infuriates me the most about it.
@@GhabulousGhoti Yeah, now as an adult that would annoy me. But fortunately as a kid I didn't mind it.
I remember this game and I still have it 😀
For all my issues with this game, it's definitely not forgettable. I'm sure I'll always remember it too :P
I just noticed your reference to Monsters vs. Aliens. Also, I'm going to draw Toad wearing the magic hat.
Which reference would that be? I tend to reference things I saw years ago and not actually know what I'm referencing.
And please show me your artwork once it's completed, I'd love to see it!
@@GhabulousGhoti The funnel.
@@NitroIndigo Ah, gotcha! That was actually intended to be a Spongebob reference, to the episode where Patrick's parents come over for a visit.
@@GhabulousGhoti I see. I was misremembering the joke in Monsters vs. Aliens where BOB forgets how to breathe.
Ah, gotcha.
Who actually played this because they like cats?
Lol, I'm sure that was one of the biggest reasons people played this :P
@@GhabulousGhoti Oh, I thought I was alone.
With the sheer vastness of the world it's hard to be alone for things like that :P
@@GhabulousGhoti I love this video regardless. Keep up the good work!

Watching this series after watching the review
I hope you enjoy! I haven't seen this one since it went up because I was in a bad spot mentally while making it - I know I took out a lot of my anger on this series so I apologize in advance if I come off like too much of a dick at any point.
Is the game good? Not at all
Is it fun? Absolutely
I am also in the this-game-is-my-childhood-camp and i love it to this day even though i never succeeded at 100% completion (i tried) :D
The one thing about this game that i would dare call genuinely good is the Soundtrack, it's such a vibe✨
Can't wait to binge this playthrough!💜
I apologize in advance if we're too harsh in this series or anything, we were both in a pretty rough spot mentally while working on it.
That said I hope you enjoy! We actually do end up 100%ing it eventually, as tedious as it is. I honestly do enjoy this game in a weird way, it fascinates me!
That said, I really don't like the soundtrack at all :(
@@GhabulousGhoti having watched the whole playthrough now, I honestly just agree (I also thought you complainsw were lowkey funny to listen to) . The game is really bad and the only reason I enjoy it because of nostalgia + having something to do that somewhat satisfies my adhd.
I also noticed that the OST isn't as good as I remember, there's just a small handfull of songs on it that I kinda like and the rest are meh.
That being said I really enjoyed watching this and I hope you two are doing better 💜
@83Protons Don't worry about us, things have been mostly better. Well, emotionally at least, channel's been on hiatus for the last year or so due to a hearing impairment I developed but luckily that's being resolved in the next few weeks :/
Glad you enjoyed this series though!
@@GhabulousGhoti that sounds good (well partially of course), hope you'll get well soon💜
I can't see how they look uncanny...like to me they look like normal cats, probably cause my eyesight is horrible 😂
I rented this game when I was 12 and actually loved it despite it being so weird. I played from the morning till 3am the next day completing it. My cat's name was Sassy(oh my god why...) and she was a Himalayan cat.
I prefer Dog Island tho (a game i rented religiously but never finished it since they sold the game before i could). I admit i recently ordered Dog Island from Ebay to play it again...im 21 and not ashamed lol. Goodluck with your cat adventure 😂
It's the fact that they have human eyes and human teeth on otherwise realistic looking cats. It just creeps me out :P
The Dog Island is a considerably better game IMO. I wouldn't call it great by any means, but it's playable and it doesn't lie about what kind of game it is on the box, which puts it a few notches above this game.
@@GhabulousGhoti Ah i see now how the teeth can be uncanny yes! Would've been better with normal cat teeth. I must be missing something with the eyes, what makes them uncanny? I'm just curious to know 👀 yes The Dog Island is quite better, I admit it's my favourite game. It's not the absolute best (games like Night in the Woods is far more better) but I guess the nostalgia is what makes it so special for me and the adventure. I'm just a kid at heart.
Looking forward to more episodes from you guys! Earned yourself a subscriber! 👍
The eyes just look distinctly human to me, and yet so soulless and dead. The pupils are all rounded and not slits like one would expect from cat eyes in the daylight, and the shape looks wrong to me too.
Nostalgia's a powerful thing, I certainly feel ya on that. Glad you're enjoying this series, and I hope you enjoy what we've got in store for the rest of it!
@@GhabulousGhoti After taking a closer look I can definitely see the human eyes now...yikes!
I always thought they looked normal until now! And yeah nostalgia is very powerful, it's something that I cling to allot. Hearing those tunes again from Dog Island is making me feel so excited to play it again after almost a decade. I feel like a kid again tbh. Would you guys ever consider to do a lets play of Dog Island in the future? (If you own it of course!) And I'll definitely be enjoying what's in store! Popping off to enjoy part 3 now! ❤️
@@birdboy5381 I might consider LPing The Dog Island at some point. We played it a few years back.
There's two points against us LPing it though - the first one being that The Dog Island is no where near as laughably bad as this game, so we can't really just make fun of it the whole time, but it's also not especially good IMO. It falls under that middle category of just being a "eh" game, which I find hardest to commentate. The second issue is that I'm moving this channel away from LPs in general. Both this series and Scooby Doo were recorded in advance, and from here on out I was going to focus mostly on scripted content (like video essays and reviews) with Tomodachi Life being the only regular gameplay on the channel. I'll be sprinkling the occasional one-off here and there, and it's certainly possible that I'll do a full game LP again in the future, but I need a break. LPing is such a bad gig IMO :P
1:42 cats do that too ._.
Not with movements like that, those animations look way more doggy to me.
Hey! Angel/Min here. Just wanted to let you know that I've been researching about Petz Catz 2, and am in contact with the developers, I've created a video about this. Knowing that my #1 favourite game is getting more attention, it just makes me excited and really pumped, because there is a small chance that people may notice the game. If you need anything else, you can look in the description of the Petz Catz 2 video on my channel.
Lol, that's kind of amazing. As much as I may hate this game, it'd be pretty cool to get into contact with the developers of it. Best of luck with that all!
@@GhabulousGhoti thanks! I'm trying my best atm, hopefully things will go well!
Was there any real reason why the Petz series had such a weird change for this game specifically? Besides ripping off poor kids.
Side Comment: This may become the weirdest LP I'll ever watch. I only say this because of the GhotiBowl videos, and I can't wait to see the low budget destruction!
The Petz series has a bit of a convoluted history. Initially, it was a series of 5 decent pet-raising sims dev'd by PF Magic and released on PC. Then in 2003, Ubisoft bought out the series and rebooted it as the modern Petz series that everyone knows and hates. However, that wasn't enough! Ubisoft also decided that just about every animal-themed game they were localizing should have the Petz branding slapped onto it, because why not?
So you have a large variety of "Petz" games that actually have nothing to do with the Petz franchise whatsoever. This includes Petz Rescue Endangered Paradise, Petz Fantasy: Moonlight Magic, Petz Catz Clan, and this masterpiece of shovelware, Petz Catz 2. This game specifically was a spiritual successor to The Dog Island (an equally as bizarre and marginally better adventure game) and was originally released in Japan under the title "The Kitten and the Magic Hat". The "Petz" part of the title was added by Ubisoft simply in the hopes that they could scam a few extra $$$ off of children looking for a pet-raising game, and had nothing to do with the original game at all. The only reason the title is "Petz Catz 2" is because that was the name of the PC game released at the same time. It is a sequel to nothing and not really part of any franchises.
That said, even if this game WAS properly marketed as a Zelda ripoff, it'd still be a pretty terrible game, but at the very least it wouldn't have false advertising on its list of gaming sins.
@@GhabulousGhoti Other games?? Oh no XD Good thing you'll be done with LPs right?
Yes, though even if I wasn't I don't think I'd be covering the rest - they aren't as hilariously bad as this game, and I have no connection to them. That'd be like me LPing another Harry Potter game, I just have no reason to. The Dog Island would be a possibility if I ever wanted to LP again, but that's about it.
6:58 That's the sound my siamese makes
The "!"? Interesting :P

If this is one of your favourite games to play why did you end your review by saying you hope you never have to play this again? What happened between 2017 and now?
I just beat this game after several months break and though I enjoyed it enough to not feel like the hours spent on this game were totally wasted I doubt I'll feel like playing it through again. I think I'll keep my copy though because some of the mini games were fun and fortunately they can be played seperately through the main menu.
Because I spent a good 70ish hours of my life working on that review so I was super sick of the game by the time I was done. Then my masochism got the better of me and I wanted to play it again.
You said you are playing on PS2, correct? I imagine the PS2 version's minigames would be significantly more playable. On Wii they're all awful due to not-responsive controls :(
Ah, I understand. And yes, PS2, only the penguin mini game sucks though even that not as much as it seems to with Wii controls.Oh and the barrel run is too easy on PS2. But the racing game, ring toss, dodge ball and ice hockey are quite fun. I don't know but I've always thought the Wii controller seems like an awful idea for most games other than maybe tennis or something. Not sure if it does but it should at least have an option to plug in a normal controller
