Why My Car Won't start - 2007 Dodge Caliber
Вставка
- Опубліковано 29 лис 2019
- In this video I will explain what I did to fix the issue of my car not wanting to start. when people hear the issue of a car not wanting to start people automatically jump to three possibilities, the battery / alternator / starter. however after a little searching online I discovered a forth and more cost-effective possibility. my cars relay had a peace that needed to be replaced. watch this video to see where it is on a Dodge Caliber.
Thank you Tom Walker for your video it helped me out! / @tomwalker7377

Bill awesome. Helps mucho nothing better than having someone show process who is learning as they go. I'm definitely in that boat. Again. Awesome and thanks
Billie, I just wanna say thank you for this video. The way you explain each step made it so much easier to understand than any of the other people on UA-cam that I have seen. Now I gotta fix my wife's P.O.S. Caliber lol.
Great video! It was my problem also glad I saw your video before I bought a starter!!Thanks a bunch!!!
Your very welcome! I am glad to have saved you some money.
Thank you Billie you saved me a headache ill get my man to do it tho. You made it look easy 👍 I'll definitely share as not many around in England UK
this video helped me out. the 5 piece detail tools helped out a lot. My wife's is a 2008 dodge calibur sxt. i was able to go in by taking off the tire for more room, and just taking a few bolts off the mud flap and pull it to the side. my switch is different from yours and the replacement didn't match up exactly and was a tight fit. but it worked. so if any of you folks run into this problem i used a clamp to the switch down the rest of the way. also i pulled all the switches and the one was clearly worn and slightly corroded. Thats how i could tell which one to swap out.
Love this video! Will definitely share with my mechanic.
Thankyou! Because I've replaced everything & this is exactly what it's doing ! So now I know where it is!
Good job. Great help for DIY same car as yours. Thanks.
Hello Bill Giovanni from Philly.i also have a 2007 Dodge caliber. But my Dodge runs fantastic. Great on gas. I'm gonna keep it Bill stay safe
Thanks for this video brother. I had just fixed my 2009 Dodge Caliber SXT yesterday. Same damn issue. I was like, "why did Dodge ever put that relay box below the headlight?" Nonetheless, this video helped my fixed the starting issue. Cheers from Calgary.
Thanks for the video been trying to find where the relays are now I know thanks
Hey Bill thanks for the video... There is a far more easier way to get to this relay block... Simply just turn the wheel inwards, undo the inner guard where it's fixed to the bumper and then pull back the inner guard , reach up and lift the top of the relay box off and wahla you have full access to the relays... Took me 10 mins to take the relay out, check and clean, and put it all back together...
So excited to try ..wish I would of watched this before 345$ on starter/mechanic!!!
I hope this is my problem because my car does the same thing. it's a 2008 caliber. sometimes it works but recently it's been doing what yours is doing in the video. new battery didn't help and it's not the starter. this is awesome. I would've never guessed . was about to change the ignition switch but you came in hail Mary 🔥
Thanks Billy, you can make a good teacher 👍
2012 having the same problem, thanks for the video.
Glad it helped!
Thank goodness I catch your video, I would never think of such a location for relays. My problem is no fog lights, any idea if it might have a relay in there as well?
Hello Bill Giovanni from Philly. Thanks again for the video. I also have a
This video was very helpful thank you
Your very welcome! I am glad that I was able to help you with your issue.
Thanks for the video, I’m really happy; you just confirmed that I may just have frozen gas lines. Greeting from Alberta btw lol
Not sure how this video confirms a gas line issue.. but I am glad it helped!
@@billie-grant I poured the gas line antifreeze into my tank AFTER the cold snap has frozen everything then I thought it subsequently melt everything. It didn't and your video towards the end confirmed to me that my lines ultimately needed heat to flow freely again. Which they did as soon as the temperatures got above freezing down from -20F. So that's how you helped
Tks mine went out last night omw home from work.... Thought it was the STARTER 💪🏿🙏🏿
I am glad this helped you out!
Thank you Billy great video 👍
Noah you are very welcome!
Amazing video. Thank you so much!
Thank you for the compliment. I am glad you liked the video. Hopefully your issue is resolved!
This will be helpful I will replace the battery first as it does turn over but battery is not producing enough voltage, but I will watch this just in case so I remember I might go through the headlight first though, or just through the mud guard vanity plate or find the access panel
Hello amigo thanks for the video help me a lot I changed the motor in my dhauter caliber 07 put everything back and try to start and nothing so I found your video I changed the fuse like you do and the car start thanks amigo
Sweet! I am glad my video helped you out!
Gonna be my 1st diy car repair. No fog lights thankfully, but
hope its not the starter
I have a 2007 dodge caliber, and I don't have this specific problem, just hearing whirring noises when i try to start up the engine sometime. this helps give me more info about my car
Thanks you the best that ever did it just brought one yesterday with that problem
Thank you Troy for the compliment! I am glad my video helped.
That was very helpful I appreciate it
Thank you very much, my car runs again!
thank you this video helped a lot
Try a drill gun to take the upper parts off ,it's faster and upholstery tool for the clip, was there no room for your hand to remove the relay, with the head light out .
You did a wonderful job for the first time, good job...
Thank you, I have the same problem
Not sure if anyone on here can help me at all: I have a Dodge Caliber with an airbag light. I’m wonder if the airbag light has a fuse; and if so, which fuse is it, and where is the fuse located. Thanks! I want to check the fuses before I do anything else. Nice video Bill. You did a wonderful job. Very clear explanation. So useful. I watched this whole thing simply because of how well done it is.
clock spring needs to be replaced
Wow, thanks. I changed the starter first. Now to try this. Awesome video
Your welcome!
Glad I could help. As for the any other names for it I am not sure.
It didn't work out. Was easy to get to though
@@James-if6pc did you ever find out the issues? I got a new starter and tried this. No luck.
@@tierraq7067 The car is weird. Didn't like starting in cold weather. We took it to a mechanic who made a starter button. That worked out for now. No starting problem in cold weather or hot
I just changed the ignition switch on my 2011. It turns over but doesn't sound very good. I am not sure what the problem is right now. Any suggestions?
a guy has a 2008 Dodge caliber he told me he'll sell it to me for 2:50 because it won't start I watched your video went out there and did what you did swapped it out fired up Grove at home getting 252 2008 Dodge caliber with a hundred thousand miles on it I kind of felt guilty pulling away, I like your video and subscribed
Wow! Thank you for subscribing! That is a great deal! I am glad to hear this video helped you out!
Thank you for the video! Absolutely fantastic! Your symptoms are identical to mine! What is the relay (stock #, or part #) that solved your problem?
Link in video description.
Great video! I’m heading out to see if I can replace mine right now!
Thank you very much! I am glad this video was helpful!
Hey just wondering. When you're went bad. Was you hearing it click click whrn you turned the key to start??? All I could hear was the finding. Right now my 07 Caliber is doing and intermittent no start but I can hear what sounds like the relay clicking. But starter does nothing
muchas gracias, yo tengo el mismo problema
I have the same car, mine starts but my lowbeams wont turn on high beams work. I checked the fuses there good. Not the relays yet. Changed my bulbs. Any ideas?
You can access the relay without detaching the bumper, just remove the left side front flap and you’ll have access to it.
Checking wires will be harder without removing bumper as the spot is quite tight, however removing and installing a new relay is easy enough
Thank for the comment, I appreciate the feedback. I found it very Difficult to reattach the relay cover after I reattached the bumper. Personally while it's possible to access the relay without removing the bumper. I would still remove the bumper so I can see what I am doing.
@@billie-grant My girl friend have the same issue...i will try to fix it before towing the car to garage,
I agree you can easily access it by removing the inner wheel well and the relay box pops right off there are 2 clips that you push in behind it and it comes right out giving enough room to inspect the wires and relay box. If you need any additional room remove the wheel and you can get right in there.
Could you get to the box by removing the headlight???
Great …will remember this
hi got 2007 dodge calibre what to no how many fuse box they are in this vehicle?
and got problem on my dash speed meter indicators light working but they're not working by the headlamp and rear light , also I have changed all the indicators bulbs still same problems, also the 1 fuse by the battery that only I can see
I need help please

Excellent video. Does this relay that you named above RY 438 or RY 116 work for a 2009 Dodge Caliber SRT
Thank you for the compliment! I am not sure the only way to know is by removing one off your car and see if it looks the same as the one I show in the video. If it is not the same. You should be able to find one that matches your car on Amazon. When I purchased mine I couldn't tell if it was going to work so I purchased two as mentioned in the video. It turned out that they both work in my cat. The biggest issue is there isn't really any information about this part. That is one of the reasons I made this video. Good Luck I would like to know how it turns out!
After that would the fuel pump be the next thing to check on if that dont work
Do you have a link to the one you bought?
U don't have to take bumper off bud, there's an access panel under vehicle right by driver front wheel, well in front of it, u have to reach up in there release relay cover and pull out relay by kinda feeling around but I just did it in 5 mins, total
I realized that I didn't need to take the bumper off but it was easier for me and that is why I removed the bumper.
Hey Chad, you seem to know much about the Caliber. I was wondering if you or anyone else here knows if the pulleys connected to the alternator is bad if it's making a loud whining sound? or is it the alternator itself?
@@robfowler7858 The pulley on the alternator. Had the same problem, called an Alternator Decoupler Pulley and makes an awful noise when bad. Pain to change but lots of helpful videos out there.
What do I take off just the finder liner clamps?
How does the top of the box come off. I can reach it with my hand but can't see it?
What is the name of the box where the connector goes?
Yesi was just going to point out as well you do not have
To take bumper off if you look there is a cut out of a square in front of driver's tire if you just reach up in there you can do it all from there .
I keep getting a warning light that key in ignition, when it’s not. Any ideas?
Do you know what number is the headlight relay?
Great and good
Thank you!
Do you have to disconnect the battery when swiping the relay? I put in new relay & my 2007 caliber wont start. Mechanic told me he has to reprogram the pcm, 1100$
Please tell me these same syptoms could be whats wrong with y avenger? I guess i bought a lemon from a dealer who stiffed me so im stuck with it on my property with no way of knowing whats wrong .
the fact that it is a dodge it is likely the same issue. however I do not have an avenger and not sure if the relays are in the same location. but if it was made in the same time frame it is possible that it could be. Good luck!
Thank you Billie! Big Help!
Do you know what for are the other two relays?
Coolant fans
I had to run cut the start wire on the starter solenoid run it inside and install a bush button and a hot wire from battery turn key to start position then hit the push start button got tired of spending money on it
Wire to starter solenoid are pos
The Amazon links aren't the right ones for my 2008 Caliber SE
where did you purchase the starter relay i am having difficulty finding a store that carries one.
Amazon should be a link in the description.
Wow thanks for the great video ,but what a place to put a relay box .this is as bad as working on a VW beetle second gen .
Can't find the link for the part?
Have you ever had limp mode issues ?
Is that for the fuel pump
Just a suggestion. Just pull the tire and the inner fender skirt next time. Much easier than pulling the bumper. God Bless.
How can you see the fault is from the relay
Yeah cus I’m having the same problem mines a 2007 and it does exactly what your did when trying to start I spent 163 on a new battery and it still doesn’t start so I’m thinking it’s that
My relay was corrosed and brokrn pin...i resoldered direct to the relay, so i don t need to replaced it. Thank.
Your welcome!
i have exact the same problem. one relay didnt work for me , maybe i have to tray to replace them all?
I love it. thank you.
I went through the the same with my 2007 Caliber...I had to take it to a mechanic to get fixed and he said it was a modular, a black box with fuses. $300 cost double the labor!
Sorry to hear that.
So it was the fuse box
Now I am going through the same problem. I am living in Germany. The mechanic told me that it is Modul TIPM problem and that I have to pay 3000 euros to change it . For diagnosis I paid 300 euros.
@Claudia Jane Linton did ur caliber works after changing your relays?
I got it running but the mechanic said it was something else...didn't last long I now have it unlicensed & sitting. I guess I will part it out, only had 97000 miles.
Very informative and made me think i may be able to tackle this on my own. This is what happened to me also. Battery is fine tested it, and just went from working fine until it simply wouldn't make a sound when you went to turn it over. Did you notice anything leading up to it? Because mine worked perfect until it didn't there were no issues leading up to it. Also why did you order 2 relays? We're they both for the same thing? Or did you replace more then one relay
Firstly sorry for the late reply, I had no indications prior to the relay failure, that is why I wanted to make sure and document exactly what happened when I tried to turn over the Caliber with this video.
Secondly the reason I purchased two relays is because I could not find documentation with the details on part number (I am sure they exist but did not know where to find them.) so I looked to amazon and found two that looked like they would fit my car and purchased both of them. In the end both resolved my issue.
@@billie-grantdo you have the Amazon link for the part and if so could you please post it
I'm having a similar issue as well except my 08 dodge caliber takes about 10 seconds to turn over but it cranks. But the check engine light flashes when I drive it.
If you are able to still drive your car I would take it to a auto parts store Napa / auto zone ... And ask them to do a diagnostic test.
A flashing check engine light is critical. The vehicle should be stopped immediately.
Wonder if the transmission went out.
Did you ever figure out what it was, mine does the same thing. Turns over but takes forever to crank
Hey, did your car dash lights freak out before you stoped driving last time?
Honestly my wife uses the caliber so I don't know if the dash lights did anything strange.
Mine was. I just replaced starter alternator and battery terminals and it's doing it again. I though ground but I can't find where
I replaced mine and got it to turn over. I drove it around the block and I'm going to try more contact cleaner
I finally had enough, extended the wires and moved the stupid thing up into the engine compartment.
Damn you should hahaha
Can You Please Tell Me How Many Boxes should be plugged in on the relay box and also how to get the plugs to put on it to make it start
If by boxes you mean relays i would need to watch the video again to see how many are installed in my car. I purchased them from Amazon. If your car is the same model as mine. Click on the link in the description.
@@billie-grant i purchased the relay box from amazon for $21.68 and i plugged it in the same exact spot as you did and it did not make my car start like yours did
Sweet! I am glad your car is up and running again!
@@billie-grant i said it did not work , i found out why it does not want to start it's the computer system inside the car it shutdown the car because it thought someone was breaking in
Sorry to hear that, I hope you are able to figure it out!
What one is the turn signal rely?
to be honest I am not a mechanic and not sure without researching online.
How many relays does the Dodge Caliber Relay bank have? My 2011 had only four relays. I bought the car used about 12 years ago. However, I'm having similar issues. I did manage to find the relay bank. I have inspected the relays and have given the bank a very good cleaning getting all the dirt and dust out of there. However, my car came up with a new problem. The engine light flashes 10 times. I did some research on this. I cleaned all the spark plugs. I cleaned the oxygen sensor. The car does start. But it shuts off when it wants to. Nevertheless, the car has been running for about one hour without shutting off. Thanks for the video.
super et merci jai caliber 1.8 de 2007
Hey I like the video it’s helped me in a way. My issue is almost like yours. How can I figure out which little fuse would be the issue?
If it is the same issue as the one I had, remove the same relay that I did. That should fix your issue as well. Just checking your car does not try and turnover at when you turn the ignition? (It's the one I am pointing to in the thumbnail for this video.)
Well it gets the electricity and ignites but it doesn’t have the power to turn on
If you can here the engine trying to turnover you may need to test your starter/ battery / alternator. If when you turn your key you only see dash lights turn on and don't hear anything from the engine it is likely the relay.
Any luck with your car?
No luck man I was hoping maybe it’d be something with the fuse or throttle body
Wish I had watched this before I replaced my alternator and battery! And still same issue! Can I get the same relay or do I need to get the number off my relay? Lol I'm so not sure! 2011 dodge caliber! I really wana try this
Honestly I just bought one that looked like mine off of Amazon. If yours looks like mine you can click on the link in the description.
A tip: watch series on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching all kinds of movies recently.
@Rocco Jude definitely, I've been watching on flixzone for since december myself :)
@Rocco Jude Definitely, have been using flixzone for years myself :)
Why my dodge caliber low beam lights don't work?
I want to know how could I change fuel filter by Dodge Caliber ?!
The fuel filter is located inside of the gass tank. And can only be changed if you open it up.
I replaced my pcm and then got the no start with new and the still working old pcm. Are all 3 relays the same? Is it worth buying 3 just incase they are all bad?
to be honest I do not know what the other relays do but what I did do and I think I showed it in the video but if I did not. I swapped one of the other relays to see if I could get my car to start. once I saw that my car would start with a working relay I purchased a replacement.
@@billie-grant I ended up replacing all relays myself but still had no start. The independent shop I found figured it out really quick. Apparently my issue was communication from the tipm was faulty and they added an extra wire... the explanation was over my head but it was an electrical issue. You would think the dealership would have tried or figured this out since the relay placement is a common issue with this car. Lesson learned, dodge dealership was incompetent and untrustworthy. Wasted my time and money.

Question I changed the relay put new starter and alternator and my car still won't start any suggestions
The only thing that comes to mind is the connections, or cables.
Maybe tipm failed
I'm about to light mine on fire... lol
This looks like it sucked to do thank goodness mines already broken 😂😂😱 the butterfly clips
It wasn't that difficult. Just time consuming!
Wat did it turn out .your relay?
I am not sure what you are asking?
Did you set the lightning bolt light on the dash panel when this issue occurred.
I didn't see or set a lightning bolt setting with this issue.
What is the lightning bolt light? It's on in my caliber
@@bolerdweller Lightning bolt means the electruc throttle control is having an issue
@@robfowler7858 maybe... or maybe not... ive had a zillion things going haywire with my 09 caliber... bought a new battery, AAA said alternator was good, but lightning bolt had been on for awhile and I was having issues. tried all the free diagnostics but they couldn't get any codes! so mechanic's $155 electronic deep diagnostic only came up with one thing.. the starter. so paid for that one... then car worked for about a day and then died again. called AAA out to check again and they said battery good starter good but alternator bad but that didnt make sense since it started! and since then it has come alive for a day of driving at least twice before dying again so....... help?!?! what do u think it is now? im thinking its a fuse or relay issue too since i was having weird horn issues too! thanks!
I need help it won't boost starter won't start
What's the name of this relay?? I'm having the same issue
when I purchased the relay from amazon I did not know the name so I looked for ones that looked similar and tried them. the two I purchased where:
1. Standard Motor Products RY438 Relay
2. Standard Motor Products RY116 Relay
as noted in the video both relays worked and I was able to start my Caliber once installed.

I hope the video was helpful for you!
I change the relay, buy it from autozone, install it and it works fine, although it makes the same failure once a week. Will it be the relay because it is not original?
Since I made this video I have been using the same relay I purchased from Amazon. If you are still having this issue. It is likely a different issue.
it may be a short in a wire or something that is blowing the relay.

Help a lot .im having trouble .i have 2008 !!!
Unfortunately car manufacturers do not keep parts consistent across the year groups of a particular model. Amazon should have the part you need.
Do I need both relays in the description or it's interchangeable
Either i did not know which one to buy so i tried both. They both work.
@@billie-grant tell me what the difference between Relay and TIPM module?
@Pascal Dassie I am not sure I have never heard of a TIPM module. FYI I am not a mechanic. I am just a guy who shared how to fix an issue I had with my car.
The first relay is for the fan....the one u pull I start my 2007 sxt 2.0 caliber without the relay.
So Your Saying Your Car Started After Taking The Third Box Out
@@devantemcqueen5678 no, just saying that's, not the one for the starter.the starter relay is build in the computer board.once it goes bad u need to get the small yellow wire from starter and connected it to the ignition that get current only when u try to start the car.. wire is a vio/brown in steering wheel.
Interesting, I wonder if something was changed in your model. Because my car won't start with out a good relay plugged in.
@@billie-grant maybe not sure, on my 2010 sxt caliber it's the thirds relay for starter
Hi what's that relay called I went to auto zone and the guy doesn't know what is called he was no help
each of the locations I have found this part it is always referred to as "relay" If you really want to buy it from Auto Zone then I would recommend taking the relay with you to the store. otherwise if you can wait a little bit for it you can purchase it off of Amazon.
If you have a 2017 Dodge Caliber then you can purchase it for a third of the price using the below link:
1. Standard Motor Products RY438 Relay amzn.to/35T1lPD
2. Standard Motor Products RY116 Relay amzn.to/34zEIzf
In my honest opinion I would remove the relay then search for it on Amazon so that you can save some money. not sure if you watched the part when I talk about the two relay's I found on Amazon but I noticed that both worked just fine and it was still cheaper then going to the auto store and purchasing one there.
Did I answer your question?
Is the relay aka the TIPM??
Not sure what a TIPM is, so I am not sure.
Yes, this relay is for tipm and for fan too
1 for start and can you still me 2 to please
