Tomamos, peppers , so many different we cant buy at the big stores & we are planting our whole property with plots , Raised beds , even pots. Grown bags on our wrap around deck on property. Plus getting chickens in 6 weeks - for fresh eggs . Our PRICES HAVE gone crazy , so millions more will b starting gardens this year, so we have been buying since b4 Our Thanksgiving & christmas. Always taught my children how to garden, fish , can , make bread etc to be to take care of theirselves always, Now teaching our Granddaughters ages 9 & 8 They loved gardening last year & helping me ( noni & pops ) grow so much food & fruits , Every one should give the knowledge of Gardening , fishing to their children , grandchildren , also sewing , cooking etc.... Nice reminder that spring will come again. Great insert with Liz on the Hollyhocks. They are tough plants. Out here in North Dakota USA in zone 4 where it's common to go down to -30 Fahrenheit and even lower with the wind chill these troupers come up every year. It's interesting that the ones we see out here are from seeds the settlers brought in the 1800's and still have a home. If I were one of those settlers It would bring me pleasure to know they were still being enjoyed.

I'm not sure how I got here, but I'm glad that I'm here! I didn't have great luck with Sweat Peas and Snaps last year but was determined to start them earlier this year. They both germinated in 3 days on my heat mat 😳 I have also started winter sowing some things in my greenhouse , so 🤞🏿
I have just gotten into growing flowers! I’m super excited to have more in my garden this year! I started to placate my 8!year old. Now I have beds of flowers as they make me happy

I have been growing more and more flowers I’ve the last few years my new favourite zinnias but I too have giant delphs and loads of lilies not to mention the Gillian spring bulbs 😂😂. Thank you for sharing Niall stay safe 👍🇨🇦
I live in Minnesota, USA. It's snowing. Our last frost date is May 15th, but I and some other avid gardeners don't put out our tender plants, such as tomatoes and peppers, until June 1st.

Talking about SWEET PEA SOWING, I want to suggest an open discussion amongst you and your followers: I have sown a few batches of sweet peas over a month ago novembre- December . Seeds were from newly bought packets from "Mister fothergils" as well as "Thompson and Morgan" from UK . I had only mild germination rate in some, and a miserable germination rate in one of the varieties. To be sure, i just sowed a new batch a few days ago in a slightly different potting compost. I wonder how long can you soak them for❓ Minimum ❓ maximum ❓if at all needed.. Do you soak at room temperature, or keep cold ❓ Please share.. What's your experience guyyyzz .. I'd love to hear Mishmish. (Zone 9-10 here )
Hmmm, you guys recommend growing a lot of seeds with heat. I’m in a cold USA ZONE5B and I sow lots of these flowers and put them outdoors. Or direct sow them in fall. The grow in spring. No heat or light or hardening off needed.
I grew delphiniums from seed about four years ago. I just put the packet of seeds in the freezer for a few weeks and that worked. It took about three years for them to get really big though I had to dig them up and put them further apart. My bad. Lovely though.

Great flower choices 👌 Hey, your getting close to 10K. I see 2022 as your Break-Out year! Brilliant 👍 and so is Liz🌿💚🌿
Hi Peggy! You are so lucky to have such a small window where frost is a risk... it's so different to here. The funny thing is that we have a really mild temperate climate, so only ever get maybe 10-20 days of frost in total, but they can occur over such a wide timeframe. Yeah the 10k is in sight! Kinda hard to believe really, and I'm delighted! Would love 2022 to be a successful year. Take care!
Hey Peggy :) I’m also 9b but in California. How do you time your peppers and tomatoes? I started the last week of December but since I have a split season (July is terribly hot so nothing grows/everything just stops until mid August), I’m actually wondering if my starts are TOO late. Thoughts?
@@melissasullivan1658 Hi Melissa, We are both 9b, but our Humidity is probably higher. People here in Central Florida start Tomato from seed in late August/early September so they are starting to bloom as our weather gets cooler. A 2nd crop can get started very soon as long as you can bring in your seedlings 🌱 if we have a threat of frost. This is a great idea, I've only had my plot 3 years and only started growing flowers last year. Knowing when to sow flowers will be very helpful for a beginner like me. 💚🌼
So nice of you, thanks! If you're starting out, don't feel under pressure to get seed-sowing straight away. Although these seeds can be started now, if you're still getting used to growing things, you can always leave them for a month or so when the days will already be getting a little brighter and warmer.
I haven’t found that snapdragon needs heat to germinate. Well, other than your standard inside heat where I germinate all my seeds. The temp varies between 63-68F, so if folks want to save their heating mat space (I know I do!), just leave them on a kitchen table and they’ll germinate in a week. :)
Great info, thanks for sharing Melissa 👍 That might just save some people needing a propagator. In our house here in Ireland, if we don't have the heating on for a while occasionally the rooms can dip down closer to 13-14oC which is chilly!

Iv took a third alloment on iys a half plot and its going to be just glowers. Sunflowers bedding g plants and few other bits. I use one of my greenhouses just for flowers. Great vid Ll the best snd happy new year to you.

Great stuff! I just ordered my seeds today & among them are dahlia & snapdragon, which I’m definitely going to be sowing the end of January. I also ordered broad bean aquadulce, as I heard you mention it quite a bit in 2021 & I fancy having a go at growing it. Thanks for the video 😀

oh god only just looked at planning my veg stuff yesterday and hadn’t even thought of flowers but love geraniums so will be doing those is month! I have some sweet peas that flower every year but would like different colour ones so may do those but perhaps use your suggestion of the toilet rolls to grow them in which is a great idea! I love getting the. otifications on a Sunday of a new one of your videos to enjoy whilst having my morning coffee after breakfast!

You see, that's me, always dropping in convincing you to get more stuff! 😂 I normally grow multicolour sweet pea but this year I think I'm going to edit down a little more and go with Cupani which is purple and raspberry pink on one flower. That's so sweet that you get the notification at just the right time for you!

Thanks so much! And there's no such thing as a stupid question so I'm glad you asked. You absolutely can choose to buy plugs instead and actually that's a very practical time-efficient option which I'd recommend if the whole seed thing just seems a bit too full on.

How appropriate is your channel for those of us in the USA where we have winters in many areas where snow and ice covers the ground from end of December thru March? I just found your channel and was amazed to find you wearing an open jacket and tee shirt in January!! We have 7 degrees F here now and snow. I am trying the “ winter sowing” method using milk and water jugs ( a gallon size). Is this method used in Ireland at all, or is it useful there?
Hi Joan I am so pleased you are talking about Winter Sowing - it’s AMAZING. You don’t need to have grow lights or take up space indoors. Cold stratification and hardening off are taken care of too. This is my second year of trying this method, I live in Hertfordshire, UK, zone 8b my garden can get as cold as -7Centigrade. I have collected my orange squash bottles and milk jugs, and plan to start some Winter Sowing this weekend, so excited. I’m Sowing Larkspur , Foxgloves, Lavender, Poppies, Pansies,. And an assortment of Hardy Annuals and Hardy Perennials. Half Hardy seeds like Petunias and Cosmos I will Winter Sow later in March.
Just to clarify I’m referring to the US Zone 8b , even though I’m in the UK and the RHS use a different system. I learnt the American zones a few years ago and have only recently become aware of the Royal Horticultural Society’s system.
Wow!!! actually I might have to give geraniums and begonias a go. I love geraniums in cooking and begonias I used to grow as a kid. I'm putting lavender in today and I have black Hollyhocks for when we move. You know if i start a flower garden im blaming you lol in all the right ways of course lol

@@niallgardens LOL Figured you'd be cool with that lol ... I use the flowers in salads but use the leaves to infuse milk and cream for icecream and such.
Hollyhocks are lovely and the bees love them but they are very prone to rust and potentially they grow to be enormous so I think those things need to be taken into consideration before going ahead with them.

Great thanks Niall! Also would love any videos on keeping a garden tidy. Or restyling it so it’s easier to do so.. Right now have plantex and wood chip that’s starting to look worn, has moss etc.. it gets weed spray once or twice a year. Edges of the lawn get trimmed but still that cross-over between lawn edge and the woodplank edging.. can’t have the grass go right up to it, or it can’t be cut.. trying to figure out keeping it all low maintenance for elderly relative. Thanks!

Left off planting Hollyhocks when I found they developed RUST every single year. Awful looking.

I’m also 9b but in California. How do you time your peppers and tomatoes? I started the last week of December but since I have a split season (July is terribly hot so nothing grows/everything just stops until mid August), I’m actually wondering if my starts are TOO late. Thoughts?
@@melissasullivan1658 Hi Melissa, We are both 9b, but our Humidity is probably higher. People here in Central Florida start Tomato from seed in late August/early September so they are starting to bloom as our weather gets cooler. A 2nd crop can get started very soon as long as you can bring in your seedlings 🌱 if we have a threat of frost.

This is a great idea, I've only had my plot 3 years and only started growing flowers last year. Knowing when to sow flowers will be very helpful for a beginner like me. 💚🌼
So nice of you, thanks! If you're starting out, don't feel under pressure to get seed-sowing straight away. Although these seeds can be started now, if you're still getting used to growing things, you can always leave them for a month or so when the days will already be getting a little brighter and warmer.

I haven’t found that snapdragon needs heat to germinate. Well, other than your standard inside heat where I germinate all my seeds. The temp varies between 63-68F, so if folks want to save their heating mat space (I know I do!), just leave them on a kitchen table and they’ll germinate in a week. :)
Great info, thanks for sharing Melissa 👍 That might just save some people needing a propagator. In our house here in Ireland, if we don't have the heating on for a while occasionally the rooms can dip down closer to 13-14oC which is chilly!

oh god only just looked at planning my veg stuff yesterday and hadn’t even thought of flowers but love geraniums so will be doing those is month! I have some sweet peas that flower every year but would like different colour ones so may do those but perhaps use your suggestion of the toilet rolls to grow them in which is a great idea!

Hi Lisa! You see, that's me, always dropping in convincing you to get more stuff! 😂 I normally grow multicolour sweet pea but this year I think I'm going to edit down a little more and go with Cupani which is purple and raspberry pink on one flower.

Thanks so much! And there's no such thing as a stupid question so I'm glad you asked. You absolutely can choose to buy plugs instead and actually that's a very practical time-efficient option which I'd recommend if the whole seed thing just seems a bit too full on.

How appropriate is your channel for those of us in the USA where we have winters in many areas where snow and ice covers the ground from end of December thru March? I just found your channel and was amazed to find you wearing an open jacket and tee shirt in January!! We have 7 degrees F here now and snow. I am trying the “ winter sowing” method using milk and water jugs ( a gallon size). Is this method used in Ireland at all, or is it useful there?
Hi Joan I am so pleased you are talking about Winter Sowing - it’s AMAZING. You don’t need to have grow lights or take up space indoors. Cold stratification and hardening off are taken care of too. This is my second year of trying this method, I live in Hertfordshire, UK, zone 8b my garden can get as cold as -7Centigrade. I have collected my orange squash bottles and milk jugs, and plan to start some Winter Sowing this weekend, so excited. I’m Sowing Larkspur , Foxgloves, Lavender, Poppies, Pansies,. And an assortment of Hardy Annuals and Hardy Perennials. Half Hardy seeds like Petunias and Cosmos I will Winter Sow later in March.
Just to clarify I’m referring to the US Zone 8b , even though I’m in the UK and the RHS use a different system. I learnt the American zones a few years ago and have only recently become aware of the Royal Horticultural Society’s system.
I am going to sow sunflowers and radish indoors then plant in pots

Wow!!! actually I might have to give geraniums and begonias a go. I love geraniums in cooking and begonias I used to grow as a kid. I'm putting lavender in today and I have black Hollyhocks for when we move. You know if i start a flower garden im blaming you lol in all the right ways of course lol

Hollyhocks are lovely and the bees love them but they are very prone to rust and potentially they grow to be enormous so I think those things need to be taken into consideration before going ahead with them.

I did and put them on my large heat mat. It also took them 3 days to germinate. The seed was definitely softer the next day.

I think you'd love Sweet Pea. I would recommend growing them up structures - they get quite heavy and can really overwhelm other plants.

Right now have plantex and wood chip that’s starting to look worn, has moss etc.. it gets weed spray once or twice a year. Edges of the lawn get trimmed but still that cross-over between lawn edge and the woodplank edging.. can’t have the grass go right up to it, or it can’t be cut.. trying to figure out keeping it all low maintenance for elderly relative. Thanks!
