    Here's the link to a thread re Biasing. I'll probably still mess around with tubes and bias (may drop it back down to 110) but I definitely dig the speaker upgrade. You might not hear it over youtube but the bigger speaker is a great upgrade and I like the warmer GT tubes as well.

    I swapped out the stock Ten-30 for an '80s vintage 10" Sidewinder (150W, 103dB). The results were astonishing; big fat cleans, smoothed-out, fizz-free overdrive, and a big hike in volume with the extra 8dB efficiency over the 95dB of the stock Celestion.

      @@oldguyjammin9732 Always welcome mate. The Sidewinder was (still is?) Celestion's most powerful speaker back in the '80s. I got mine out of a 2x10, 300W cab my bassist mate built and was surplus to requirements.

    Nice vid. Love the channel. In my dsl5cr I put a 12 inch greenback and upgraded the tubes with a couple of tung sol 12ax7s in the preamp and a jj 12bh7 for the power amp. I also managed to do the groove for the speaker without going all the way through using a cheap rotary tool. It sounds so SO good. Seems to do everything better now.

      Love to read comments like this!! Nice job with the rotary tool, I just got pissed and since I knew I’d be keeping this awesome little amps, just dug in and got it done, haha. For fun some time, slip a 12AY7 in that first socket and see what you think. It changes the gain structure a bit... and in a good way imo. Thanks for posting \m/

      @@oldguyjammin9732 yeah awesome, i'll give it a run for sure. on a side note i've actually got the dsl20cr as well, and i've got a Creamback 75 in that one and its funny how a speaker can work so well in one amp but not another. The greenback in the dsl20 just sounds way to loose and boomy, but perfectly balanced in the dsl5, and the creamback sounds way to tight and focused in the dsl5 but really well balanced in the dsl20! 110mV sounds best to me for bias in my DSL5c, and will provide very good tube life. I really like the Celestion G10 Creamback in this amp. It provides deeper bass, better definition, no fizz, and maintains great tone at all volumes, even with everything dimed. I gig with this amp and love it!

      @@ugopodetti unfortunately no. It does sound very nice though. I’d love to hear it compared to a lower watt Jensen, but it seems most people are swapping out for celestion
      Dan’s description is pretty accurate. Sound is clearer, less fizz, and more bottom end. When cranked it gets loud enough to vibrate the cab for certain notes and I have to cut the bass a bit; a common complaint is that this amp sounds boxy and not enough bass but the creamback seems to solve that, unless you’re going for metal chug

I think I settled on a Creamback to tame the highs and getter a rounder sound. What are the advantages of going 12” over 10”. (Relatively new to amps, please excuse a basic question). Also I’m not playing metal, would you recommend a 12AY7 in the preamp. Thanks - subbed.

    I’m watching your video again. I think you’re the only person on you tube who took the thing apart!
    I’ve had mine a little over a year and want to see how it can be improved; already a very nice amp
    Have a new speaker on the way. No hiss or fuzz so my tubes are probably fine; not sure that better tubes will make enough difference to justify the price
    Curious about upgrading caps or circuit mods to get a little more bass

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  2 роки тому +1

      Well thanks for watching, I tend to take everything I have apart to get a look around inside. I don’t much get into component replacements (caps and such) but don’t think this is the amp for it either, too much stuff going on inside. The JCA, Egnater and VHT amps are better ‘modders’. Imo the best thing you can for this amp is change the speaker and the socket 1 tube to a 12AY7 (gain reduction lets the power tube speak up a bit more). Speaker is up to you, but a Texas Heat, Greenback or Creamback are all good choices. I’ve rarely noticed HUGE differences in tube rolls or speaker swaps but sometimes the summing up of all the small changes becomes nicely noticeable. Have fun \m/

    Another great video ! I’ve been thinking the same with my older DSL 40. Gonna re-tube and change the stock speaker to hopefully warm it up, especially on the lead channel. What do you recommend for a speaker as well as your preferred bias voltage on the DSL40 ? 😎

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  3 роки тому

      32 mV DC, CreamBack - the G12M not H, and then whenever possible dime the master. It seems that much of the fizz in Marshalls comes from the preamp. Relying on an overdriven power amp does wonders.

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  3 роки тому

      @Matt - I thought the M got me further from the “Marshall fizz” - the H seemed a little brighter or harsh to me. I find the DSL to be a bright amp anyway, so I prefer darker speakers in it, like the Swampthang or M. But tone is subjective so if you like the tone of the H, go for it! :) try searching for “G12M vs H” I bet some things come up from several forums that you’ll find really helpful - good luck \m/

    Nice mods! I think I’ll stick a green or cream back in mine but staying with a 10” speaker, I find for average sized and smaller rooms, clean or really heavy that the 10” pushes good enough air and is thick enough, I’ve got my bigger 30w laney ironheart metal amp with a 12 cab and I can’t hear a particular difference that would make me want the bigger speaker in the Marshall unless it’s in a much larger room, maybe I find that I want to tame the bass on the bigger amp more compared to the Marshall dsl5, but I can push the bass up on the Marshall to more than I need so I guess I’m all set with a 10” :) and I can play this one cranked without breaking my windows! Win win!
    What’s your opinion on the new mods after 2 months with them? :)

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  3 роки тому

      Right on, I put a Creamback G12M (not H) in my DSl40 and appreciated the difference. While I was looking at 10” options the Ragin Cagin kept coming up on list after list. I’m really liking the mods and like you said being able to dime the volume and bring the gain up just a bit is a super plus, sounds so good. Here’s something to check out, I recently got a Killing Floor pedal by SDuncan and it makes my DSL5 sound more like my DSL40. I set the knob around 10 O’Clock (always on) and “oh my gosh”. Guitar volume knob works great to move into less/more levels of gain, etc. It also makes me glad I’ve got a big speaker in there. Whatever you do check out the Killing Floor, best piece of gear in a while :) Cheers!!

    I just bought one of these and am a bit confused about ohms and extension cabs.
    The quick start guide states: "A single 16 ohm speaker cabinet can be connected ..." But on the amp itself below the speaker socket, it says: "1 X 16." Does that mean you can use one speaker cabinet with two 8 ohm speakers wired for 16 ohms? Or does that mean that any cab you use can have only ONE 16 ohm speaker? Logically, it seems that both will work safely with this amp, but I want to be sure so I don't damage my new amp. Please clarify.

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  Рік тому +1

      Ya, you got it. Total load impedance should be 16 ohms whether it’s a single speaker or a cab with 2 or even 4 speakers loaded in it.

  • @markfuller8047
    @markfuller8047 2 роки тому +1

    Keep in mind not all DSL-5c's are exactly the same. Some have their speaker offset to one side. Confirm if your speaker is centered or off to the side before you cut. Some amp chassis have 1 tube so far forward you'll not be able to properly seat it once the 12" speaker is in place. You'll never get that tube in with a 12" Greenback, for example.

    • @markfuller8047
      @markfuller8047 2 роки тому +1

      Indeed my speaker is to the side, and tube 1 too forward to fit with a 12” in place. I ended up moving the amp back 1/2” which required drilling new holes. By that time the offset hole was cut, greenback fitted. Came out great, looks fine. Big help to have a 12”. Went with 12at7 for valve 2 so a bit less gain. Next will be a Mercury transformer with 8 and 16 ohm taps. Will have to drill for the 8 ohm jack but a ton of external cab possibilities open up with the 8 ohm option.

I found the greenback at 8 ohm. Is there any problem if I buy the greenback 8 ohm or should I buy the celestion G12 16 ohm’s?. Is the same greenback 16 and 8 ohm right?

    • @oldguyjammin9732
      @oldguyjammin9732  2 роки тому +1

      Sometimes getting the right ohm’s matching is tough but in this case, Greenbacks come in both 8 and 16 ohm versions. reverb.com/p/celestion-g12m-greenback-12-16-ohm-25w-replacement-speaker?hfid=49728831&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhPCJpPzR9QIVgSCtBh3a9gdcEAQYBSABEgJV7vD_BwE
      Going over the suggested impedance is a safer bet than using a speaker rated at fewer ohms.

    I have a DSL20that I play clubs with after having a much louder(and heavier) DSL40. Both amps have the standard crap stock 12 inch speaker. I put a Vintage 30 in and settled on that. I am impressed by the smaller lighter and less loud DSL5 and the Greenback as it sounds a little different. After watching your vid you are trying to tell me you HAVE to chisel a groove in the cabinet to fit a12 inch speaker in place of the 10 inch stock one? There is no other way to move the speaker around to fit?
    I had an Orange Rocker 15, the smallest combo Orange has. Had a crap stock 10 inch speaker so I put a 10 inch Greenback in there. Better but just lacked bass so I put in the 12 inch version and wow! I had to put the speaker one inch to the left as the power tube was too close. There was also a rectangular chassis protecting the tubes which I simply had to leave off to accomodate the larger 12 inch speaker. Usually if trim pots are for something else they will be set and then a fixed with a dab nail polish or something similar, meaning they’re never to be set again...? One thing I have come to realize is that “proper biasing” is like sniffing a cork you just pulled from a bottle of wine. It’s a preference, it’ll change your tone a bit, may decrease tube life if too hot, but won’t damage your amp if it’s this way or that.

      Yep, you have the older one. You won't screw it up 🙂 it's pretty straight forward. I don't think you can disconnect the speaker cable on the Oder one, seems like it's hard wired... so you'd have do some wire cutting and such. However, if the speaker cable plugs in to a jack labeled 16 ohms at you should be able to plug Any 16 ohm speaker into the same.. so I just looked it up and you'll need to unplug that speaker wire before plugging a larger cab in to the same 16 ohm jack.

      dean mccaskill the only way to use an external speaker is by pulling the black cable out of the 16 ohm jack and connecting the external cab to the same output jack. Any other "output" is for other things. It should work great, but you won't be able to use the combo speaker AND an external one too. The 40 does allow you to use the combo speaker PLUS and external cab.

      Hey there, well... lets see. Tried a different guitar, input cable? Do you hear a series of clicks (relays) when you power it up? Do the tubes glow (take the covers off and look/feel for warmth). If no clicks it’s probably an internal fuse, i assume the On Switch lights when you click it on? If not it could be the “mains fuse”. Hopefully you’ll see that one of your tubes remains dark and cold, if not it’s probably internal and we’ll have to dig deeper. There are at least TWO glass fuses on the circuit board, it could be one of those but you’ll have to pull the chassi.

      12AY7 is my go to 90% of the time. I recently found a new tube (forgetting the number right now) but its a 12AX7 on one half and a 12AY7 on the other which would leave full gain on the classic channel and reduce the gain on the ultra channel!! I plan to check it out soon.

      Never too late around here. Try a 12AY7 tube in the socket closest to the input jack, it'll reduce the gain quite a bit. And then you can always roll off half your guitar volume and crank the reverb 🤘

      So if you want to tame the red and still have some edge in the green, what worked for me was : Used RFT 12AX7/ECC83 in v1 and v2 ( v1 tested sl. weaker than v2) .
      Used Philips 12AU7/ECC82 in v3 power tube ( probably drops power to 2.5-3W ) I also tried a used Silvertone 12BH7 and it was nice, but I wanted to quieten the amp down a bit for my preference.
      Nos Mullard 12AT7/ECC81 in v4 phase inverter. This really helped remove harshness.
      So prob any used old ECC83s that are a bit weak will improve red channel.
      But the big surprise was the Mullard ECC81 in v4 phase inverter .
      Obviously this does not apply to DSL5CR that does not have a valve phase inverter.

      @@mikebarnard2689 Thanks for the response sir, do you find that you can get a good Jimmy Page tone with this? Are these mods cost effective or would it make better sense to buy something else? I only play at home at bedroom levels with a few opportunities to wick the throttle

      @@robmfk6987 The mods I have done ( and fitted Celestion G10m Greenback ) really transformed the amp.
      It was too loud at 5W for home use that’s why I swapped out the 12BH7 power valve for an 12AU7 ( ECC82)
      As far as cost effectiveness goes.. old stock Mullard 12AX7 ( ECC83) are very expensive the Ecc 82 and 81s are much less expensive.
      You could try 12AT7s ( ECC81s) v1 and v2 which will give much less gain.
      I chose to used worn 12AX7s ( ECC83s) and they just hit the sweetspot. Valves that test med to weak doesn’t mean they will fail but they will cost way less and you don’t want the high gain structure of a good ECC83 in the red channel.
      Hope this helps
