    Stewart when I was at Edwards Air Show last year quite a few other photographers were carrying the second gen 100-400 with a 1.4 teleconverter on and they were shooting at with either a 1Dx III or using of course the R5 mirrorless I talked to a couple of guys out there at Edwards and they love their old 100-400 II lenses .

    I had this setup for years with my 5d mk2, and it is absolutely excellent, even did some tests of sharpness on my youtube channel. Hopefully you have invested into MK III extender as that has a significantly better image quality than mark II version.

    Nice stunning shots, Stuart. Saved me from buying another 300mm zoom that is soft all the way out.

    WOW , I was looking at the 100-400mm mkii is usm and using a 1.4x extender, but after watching this video again I am blown away with the image quality. I am now seriously considering this lens and buying the 2x canon mkiii extender on my canon 5DS.
    Thanks again Stuart, always like your videos, very helpful mate.

      Thanks David, many thanks for your comment. It’s a tough call - the 100-400ii will give you great flexibility but I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with the image quality coming from the 300 with the 2x. Let me know what you decide to do and how you get on! Stu.

    Hi Stuart,
    After looking for a decent 300mm f2.8 I is usm, I found one I liked and buying it tomorrow and getting a 2x iii canon extender as well.
    Thanks to you for the review and your inspiration and passion going forward.
    I am a very fussy about my images quality and what I have seen from yourself is breathtakingly good images.
    I am really looking forward to going to Lakenheath and Mildenhall asap,
    Thank you again for a fantastic lens review.
    I also enjoyed the camera setup settings for aviation on a previous video, this was extremely helpful.
    Kind regards
    David

    I do aviation photography and owned the 300 f2.8 version 1. Then upgraded to version 2. I used the newest 1.4x and 2x extenders with both lenses. The results with the 1.4x was superb. But I was never satisfied with the results of the 2x extenders with moving subjects. Images were always a bit soft. But I'd glad you are getting good results.

      I had the same experience with the 300 2,8 - at 300 its fantastic, absolutely tack sharp, with a 1,4x it was acceptable, but with a 2x the autofocus seemed to struggle on my 7d mk II, the pictures were always a bit soft.

    The 300mm will work a treat for you. It works great with the tcons and with you having a 2nd body/lens you have all the bases covered.

    Very interesting vlog, just looked at the price of 300mm, and need to do a bit of saving as unfortunately I would also need to upgrade my EOS 7D mk I, to be able to use an extender. Let me know when you switch to mirror less and Ill put in a bid for your mk II. I switched from Sigma 150-600 HSM sport, for same reasons, and got a Canon EF 100-400 IS USM I, which has seen some improvement

    When you pulled it out of the box I thought, no, I wouldn't have bought a 300 although I also would have rejected the other superzooms for the same reasons. But those images are sooo sharp, and beautiful to look at. I don't like TCs but this has got me thinking seriously about longer primes as an alternative.

    • @sturousephoto
      @sturousephoto  Рік тому

      Thanks for your comment! It was a tough choice but I think it may be a good move for me. I always thought TCs should be avoided but when the results are that good, why not use them!?

    Hi Stuart,
    Long story cut short I had to send lens back, nothing wrong with it just the other half given me a lot of grief.
    But good news I got another canon 300mm f2.8 and a mkiii 2x extender from Park Cameras in excellent condition today, I can highly recommend this company because they went above and beyond with customer service.
    I can personally say that they are one of the best Cameras sellers I have ever done business with, the helpfulness is amazing and patients was outstanding.
    Overall experience 10/10 at Park Cameras.
    Stuart I owe you a great deal of gratitude for your review of your Camera gear especially the Canon lenses, now a proud owner of a fantastic Canon 300mm f2.8 lens with a mk3 2x extender.
    I really hope we can meet up at Mildenhall or another place this year because it would be nice to thank you in person, my friend.
    How is the van coming along, my only concerns are security of equipment inside, and a water tank or container near the electrical is risky.
    Thanks again Stuart.

      That’s great news David! I absolutely recommend Park Cameras too, they’re one of the best in the country, for sure (although I haven’t used them for buying used gear myself).
      Really pleased you’re happy with your 300 2.8, it’s a superb lens and hope it serves you well for many years! Pleased to help and that you found value with my experience of this lens.
      Would be great to meet up at the end of a runway somewhere! 👍🏻
      Van build going well, but the storms, the cold and the rain are slowing me down a bit at the moment!!
      All the best!

      Thank you Stuart, I am going to be at Coningsby for a day then two days at Lakenheath and Mildenhall next week we'll that's the plan I will confirm over the weekend.
      Went to East Midlands Airport for a test run and wow was I impressed as I normally use my 70-200mm f2.8 mkiii and a 1.4x extender, I got it ready but didn't use it once.
      I got to admit that this lens is a 100x better than my sigma 150-600mm contemporary which I sold on ebay and got a good price.
      I actually got photos of a near mid-air collision today, it's one hell of some photos

    Hi Stuart. You got a new subscriber! I, like you have been using a Tamron 150-600 G2 with my Canon R5, and with "mixed" results. I got some half decent shots at Lakenheath last month in good light. BUT..... you can't rely on its performance all of the time. I recently went to the Mach loop and waited 3 days for an F35 to come through, and I have been a Wildlife/Aviation photographer for over 20 years and hope my technique and understanding of settings etc are not in question. But despite this, the shots were not tack sharp, I wouldn't say they were soft but not to the level I want/expect. So my Tamron is on ebay, but before I put it on I got a loan of the 100-500 Canon to compare. The Canon was slightly sharper, only slightly and certainly not 3 x better as is the price. So I have my old 100-400 and 1x4 converter at the moment whilst I debate what to do. Like you its only a hobby. I will watch your journey with the 2.8 with interest. Great images by the way👍

    • @sturousephoto
      @sturousephoto  Рік тому

      Fantastic, thank you! Welcome to my channel! Perhaps tack sharp images is just too much to expect from a lens that does so much. Compromises must be made somewhere I suppose! If you see me at Lakenheath be sure to say hi! Cheers!

    Hi Stuart.
    I have the sigma 150-600 contemporary and its crap to be honest.
    My canon 70-200mm is a dream to use compared to the sigma 150-600, the sigma hunts and when on target goes off very quickly and trying to refocus is a pain in the backside.
    After your review of the canon 400mm f5.6 I thought its worth a look at, i bought one from MPB and looking forward to using it soon.
    Thank you.

      Hi David, interesting to hear your thoughts on the Sigma! Perhaps a 150-600 focal length is just a bit too much to ask for! If you like your 70-200 then I’ll be extremely disappointed if you don’t fall in love with the 400! 🤞Cheers.

    That’s a nice lens!! The sharpest I have is their 70-200 f4 but when I tried the 2x on it I got some fuzzy soft focus issues. Have you experienced that with your 2x?

    • @sturousephoto
      @sturousephoto  Рік тому

      No, I’m really impressed with the 70-200 and 2x. Mines the MkII f/2.8 version rather than the f/4. It’s just as sharp as my old Canon 100-400 MkI.

    Stu - do you have any insight into how your Extender/300mm combo would perform when mated with Canon Mirrorless via the EOS EF to RF mount adapter? Thanks in advance.

    • @sturousephoto
      @sturousephoto  6 місяців тому

      Not really , Nick - other than to say I don’t think the image quality should be affected at all. If anything - I’m not certain on this, maybe others can help here with their experience - but the autofocus uses a different system to DSLRs and it should be more possible/accurate at smaller minimum apertures. For example, my 7D2 won’t autofocus beyond f/8 whereas mirrorless I understand will focus at a minimum of f/11 or slower. Hope that makes sense and I’m not 100% certain of my understanding here!! Regards.

    What do you think about the Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III lens? Also, should I get the 75-400 and use a 2X Extender?

    • @sturousephoto
      @sturousephoto  Рік тому

      75-300 is probably just about ok if you’re on a budget. 75-400? Do you mean the 100-400 L Mk I or II? The answer is it depends on your camera body, which do you have?
