These are the Jewel Line of watercolour from Winsor & Newton. These are a recent line that they have brought out this year. These have all been released previously and are back by popular demand. I'm not usually a fan of this brand but these are really nice colours!

Over on the wetcanvas site, indianagreg did some research on Aqua Green. W&N told them that the pigment hasn't been assigned a C.I. number, but is known simply as 'Palomar Turquoise.' This seems to be listed as 264-4900, Palomar® Turquoise, Chlorinated Cu-Phthalocyanine, and considered lightfast and transparent.
Thanks for the info. I've also heard its mostly used in production for plastics.
I have all of these. The aqua green is amazing as well as the cobalt green. I swatched the trans. orange then set it aside but just a few days ago I pulled it back out while I was playing around with colors and after seeing a decent amount on paper I fell in love. It's the best orange I have seen so far of any brand

Ooh, the Cobalt Green Deep is a stunning colour! I must buy it. :) The Transparent Orange looks lovely too, even though I don't usually like oranges. When I switched from acrylics to watercolours, I didn't know much about pigments nor did I understand the pricing of watercolors; one of my local art shops was having a clearance and they sold the Smalt 5ml tubes for 3€, but I bought only one because I was so clueless. Later I could have kicked myself when the penny dropped , and also I do love Smalt. Thank you once again, Dan! In the world of loud, fast paced extroverts your videos are a pleasant haven.
Thanks! I've been using the cobalt to make neutrals and it does so beautifully. Smalt is an interesting colour. Same I'm not an orange person but this Transparent orange breaks the rule! wow 3 euros is a steal!
Thank you for sharing this amazing set! That cobalt Green Deep is gorgeous 😍 I bought a year ago the Aqua Green, is such a lovely color. Usually, I used it for painting ocean/beach sceneries.
I've just discovered last night how beautiful the Cobalt Green is, it makes really nice neutrals.

I got the Aqua Green and it has given those pieces quite an interesting look. I’m even more tempted to get that transparent orange now too.
That orange is amazing!
I’ve got Transparent Orange…it’s intense and very transparent, so quite unique for an orange. The Quinacridone Violet is a lovely shade on it’s own, but I’ve not been very impressed with its mixes with other colours. Smart is nice, but only a little bit more Violet than French Ultramarine. Aqua Green I don’t know, but I am really interested in Cobalt Green Deep…it looks really nice and deep with good granulation. I would be very interested to see how that mixes with other colours. Ugh. I’m such a sucker for jewel-toned paints. I actually like this color selection better than the jewel-toned set I reviewed from MGraham, but I’d probably have to try them myself to really know for sure. Thanks for showing these off-didn’t even know they existed til I saw your post on insta!
Oo I forgot M Graham has a jewel set. I'll have to rewatch it. Some of these colours are really nice.
Some very pretty colours. I have sanguine from the last release and another green colour I can't remember off the top of my head. I call it dirty green lol. Sanguine is gorgeous though.
I too have sanguine. its a nice colour, It's a shame they didnt bring it back. However I believe Schmincke sells the same colour, they call it Bordeux.
I love Aqua Green. It is pretty much my favourite water color (for colours sake, not the MOST useful for anything I do unless it is 'colouring' stuff).
The Orange was also a must buy from the original limited set. It was apparently the same pigment as a highly recommended Schmincke colour... but was much easier to find at the time.
I am very glad they are now part of the permanent range!

Oh my! I think u mean Chinese orange(?) It seemed similar and from where I live its hard to get so I'm now tempted to check out transparent orange now!!! 😳
Tbh I love the look of the smalt blue! I’ve heard it’s warmer than ultramarine and I’ve been on the search for the warmer blue. Any suggestions?
Cerulean is a good light, granulating warm blue. My personal fav is a dark valued one, Indanthrone Blue.
Penholder Art , which Blue is warm? You called Cerulean Blue warm and it is a Cyan color, and you also called Indanthrone (a violet blue) warm,

@@justtheletterV274 Kinda both are. Warm and coolness of colours are subjective. I always consider Phthalo blue a cool colour while blues that are more closer to red are warm.
@@Dan.B.Artist that's the problem, red and green are.two different types of color, green is a secondary color meanwhile red is a primary/tertiary color so it wouldn't make sense to label them as those, rather, as biased towards purple, i imagine green as in nature, like pine trees in Maine or the flowerfull fields of Missouri. Meanwhile, when I see violet, I either see it during sunset or at night, purple and violet blue like PV15 BS and PB60 along with PV23 and PV15 for purple. So generally, purple is colder than green to me and that makes PB60, the coldest color in existence because it leans the closest to Violet than other blues, but... PV15 BS is a violet blue that's on the same level.
It happens that I have the W&N dot card and I noticed that colors displayed on screen might be significantly shifted. Transparent orange is more reddish and close to schminke lasurorange. Smalt appears as a blue as it would be more a bluish ultramarine violet. Aquagreen appears greener on my chart. Maybe an effect of the light used?
Perhaps it's the screen? Everyone's screen is different. I edit it to look like they are in reality on my screen so might be a different one to others.

I've only tried Schmincke's transparent orange from a dot card and it's lovely.
Don’t know about Schminke, but it’s nearly identical to D.Smith and QoR’s Transparent Pyrrol Orange paints which are both PO 71 which is the same pigment as Schminke’s Transparent orange. The tubes in the US list the pigment as DPP. PO71 is diketo-pyrrolo pyrrole orange. In other words an acronym for the actual chemical name is DPP.
Aqua Green is listed just as "Phthalo" in some sources, and as you mentioned, Transparent Orange is listed as PO107 which not an official Color Index pigment, but is a version of Pyrrole Orange--the historical name is Cosmoray Orange as listed on www.artiscreation.com/orange.html#ci_pigment_orange. It would be interesting to see how Aqua Green compared to WN Phthalo Turquoise PB16 and how Smalt compares to WN PB29 colors. Cobalt Green Deep is really beautiful, I think that's the only one that would tempt me to buy.
The transparent oranges doesn't have the pigment on the tube nor does W&N list it on their website. It is mentioned on Jacksons but i don't know what their source of info is. Either way they should be telling us even if it is a gorgeous colour.
@@Dan.B.Artist I have some limited edition tubes and on the transparent orange is written PO107.
I thought that cobalt green is a normal one, so I did not buy it and later regretted it. I saw later that it has a different colour.

@@Dan.B.Artist can also confirm, I had their limited edition orange and it's PO107, then when they released them as part of the line the number was gone 🤷

You said that the smalt blue wasn't genuine smalt, and that's correct, however, the reason why it's called smalt blue and not smalt blue hue is because it is single pigment and has a color similar to smalt
They do call is Smalt Dumonts Blue. I dont think people mind that its a hue but it has however damaged handmade paint makers such as myself. Ive sold genuine smalt in half pans and people were expecting more of the winsor and newton colour which is similar in hue but nothing like the texture of true smalt.
Penholder Art , I saw that you sold gen. Smalt, genuine Smalt is cobalt related, however, this Smalt hue is Ultramarine related, calling it Smalt (Ultramarine) is another big problem.. either way, this Smalt color is a good hue for the cmy secondary palette
Transparent Oranges non-official pigment number is PO107
I want all of them (currently have Smalt and Transparent Orange) but not happy with their lack of and/or deliberately vague pigment info on the Aqua and the Transparent Orange. Figured out the Transparent Orange (deliberately vague), choosing not to buy the Aqua despite wanting it because of the lack. I won’t buy “mystery” pigment paints for artist quality pricing. Expect that kind of thing from craft/hobby paints or classroom (young children - ie Prang or Crayola) paints - not those marketed to artists.
I think you are safe with this line of paints. The reason the Aqua doesn't have pigment info on is because the pigment hasn't been registered in the national pigment index. From what I have found it is mostly used in the making of green plastics. It's a safe and reliable pigment. The Orange is PO107 not sure why they dont list it. I think it's probably due to bigger things, as artists we often forget that our area in the pigment world is only a small fraction of it. We are totally at the whim of industry manufactoring that's how we lost PO49 because the colour fell out of fashion in the manufactoring world.
The original Smalt Blue is made by PB32 pigment and it is potassium cobaltous silicate in other words pulverized glass coloured with cobalt blue. PV15 also known as Ultramarine violet is sodium aluminium sulfosilicate in other words it is ultramarine blue heated in high temperature and mixed with ammonium chloride.
These pigments are not the same thing and they don't look alike. I'm saying this because I have the Smalt Blue pigment and it doesn't look not even close to the W&N version.
I don't know what they were thinking when they named this colour a Smalt. This is not Smalt and it doesn't look like a Smalt. S,malt doesn't have a purple hue in its tints.
I'm assuming because it is a granulating blue that they felt it fit?
@@Dan.B.Artist Probably but on the other hand you buy Smalt because it has some very unique properties. It is the super granulator lol, it is almost sparkling , and it has a different cooler colour than Ultramarine.
