My 2023 Silverado with the LZ0 has been at the dealership for a month now with this issue. Backordered parts with No ETA. Very disappointed to hear that they're shipping replacements with no fix to the problem. Thank you for the information sir.
Yup I’m at the 10’week mark waiting on my dealer to get this part in. They have zero notice when that will be. I’ve also begun the lemon law stuff. This is my work truck and I have lost 10s of thousands because of this damn part and GMs inability to get it repaired in a timely manner
Excellent videos on the failure point. I was thinking of buying a 2025 Silverado ZR2 but very disappointed I was going to trade my 2022 Toyota tacoma in for a bigger truck. I have never have gone to the dealer except for oil changes and rotatations.
Mines been down about 7 weeks at the dealer they told me between December 12th and 26th estimated ship date. Consider your self lucky mine was leaking, I noticed the coolant was low in the overflow bottle by the firewall. So I didn’t dare drive it.
It would really help if you could figure out what's filling with the LZO coolant control valve. The updated valve is failing at a high rate. Over 3000 broken down LZO's sitting at dealers right now waiting for the part
I will if given the chance. We have quite a few here at my dealership waiting as well, but I cannot teardown a warranty valve is it needs to go back to gm. Hopefully one is customer pay and I can tear into it then see what is going on. I am assuming it's a similar issue to this one, but I will share info when I get the chance.
I really wish some aftermarket company could come up with a replacement for this junk. It's sad every time I drive my 2021 I am just waiting for mine to fail. Shame they cant just use a traditional thermostat for crying out loud.
The CCV is a core part of how GM was able to get the engine to meet emissions regulations. They didn't make such a complicated part for the fun of the challenge. The biggest issue is the grease turning gummy and the electrical connector corrosion.
Is the CCV assembly the same between the LM2 and LZ0? I thought they eliminated one of the loops on the LZ0? I guess my question is, is this the most common failure mode that requires the entire CCV to be replaced? Could the worm-drive sub-assembly be replaced in place? I'm tempted to just buy a CCV for my LM2 to have just in case.
Waiting on the dealership to replace it under warranty going on three months for my LZ0. Sucks cause having no heater for my kids in morning when I drop them off at school.
What do you think about oil filter bypass systems? Specifically one made by insane diesel for the 3.0L Duramax. Is it a good idea, worth the money? I don't want to increase my oil life I just want to get the microns down and run cleaner oil thru the engine. Is this product worth your doing a video? Thanks, James
Hi! Thanks for the video. It’s very helpful and informative. But could you explain what exactly this part, which fails, is responsible for? Does it block the flow of coolant, direct it somewhere, or cut it off to a specific area?
I wonder if maybe mine is starting to fail. Every now and then I smell coolant while driving. I have looked for any kind of leaks. I have not seen any leaks or anything on the ground where I park my truck either. It worries me because I smell it. I did tell my dealer about it. I smelled it when I had my 19 hd too. The dealer said they didn’t find anything and it could be from the overflow. They said the same thing about this 23 1500. Coolant is still on the full mark. I think I’m at 8000 miles on my truck.
As always, thank you for the visuals. What is the shop hours to replace this control valve? I’m just out of 3/36 warranty and it looks like I’ll need this worked on. Or is this valve technically part of emissions warranty??
It's unreal that they haven't attempted to change anything with the actuator considering this is such a common issue under warranty. They could at least have the supplier put more grease in there.
sooooo.... 3D scan for experimenting with different materials? loads of options like 3D printed metal or maybe someone machining a couple prototypes with bronze for its self lubricating features could be a reasonable experiment? i bet there's more than one person out there on the waiting list that would love to be a guinea pig getting their truck on the road faster... on a side note, what is the worm gear actually made of? it doesn't seem to be GF reinforced plastic at all from here but youtube compression does wonders...
My 22 failed at 64k. It took 14 days to have the truck fixed. It was just dumb luck that the dealership I took my truck to had a spare one delivered shortly after I dropped it off.
Yes it did, mine also leaked coolant. So it’s been sitting at the shop for about 7 weeks. (20,000 miles currently) I also started plugging it in a few days before it failed as others have also mentioned the same thing on the forums, I had the engine block on a two hour timer.
Taking my 2023 silverado to the dealer today for this (P1098) code. Truck has 34k on it and now does not have any heat and temp gauge never comes off cold. Just very disappointed!
If you have the lm2. I have 15 of these on hand if you need one. I’ll offer them for retail. I have heard the dealer reimbursing owners for the original cost of the part up to retail price I believe. The part number I have is 24001355. I also have original purchase invoice if you would like to see
Thank you to the engineers that made this ticking time bomb. Probably the same ones that made the actuator for the blend door in the 2000s trucks
Exactly what came to mind, those awful blend door actuators.. lol
@@lukehaynes481 don’t forget the plastic 3800 coolant elbows. At least those were easy to replace though
@babygators I actually just bought my son a Buick with the 3800 and those fittings are among the first items to be swapped.
@@DemonWorks you found one that hadn’t already blown the originals??? That alone is impressive haha
I really appreciate the information you share about this engine. it's nice to see information from such a knowledgeable person. Thank you.
Great information. Hopefully they get this sorted before decide to purchase a LZ0.
For sure keep us posted. This is one complex heat distribution device.
Were codes being produced leading to diagnose this failure?
P1098 was the code this one stored.

Same here! Im pissed!
Same here mine was leaking so it sits at the dealer.
sorry to hear that, I am assuming all of you guys are LZ0's?
@ 2023 with 60k
Yep 20k on the odometer.

23 LT trail boss here. Ccv failure at 33k miles. Daily reset of cel and no long trips until they get a part in. So frustrating

Yeah, that's the unfortunate situation right now. The LZ0's are failing left and right it seems, just like the LM2...
I covered the front of my truck in cardboard. It looks horrible but keeps the engine temps up after I reset the code.

Yea, can someone please make a brass gear to replace the cheap plastic one! Grease? What grease??
Hopefully like 3800 coolant elbows, Dorman will make a decent one of these.

I would replace the whole unit, honestly. The LZ0 is different, but still has failures. I have not taken one of those apart yet, but I will.

The LZ0 uses a two-way coolant control valve. I wonder if it has the same valve that fails in the 3-way coolant control valve? Nice demo. 👍
Correct, the LZ0 has less in/out. i am unsure if it has the same cause of failure as these. ua-cam.com/video/dxPkKIX-4aM/v-deo.html 4:15

100% agree
Traded my 3.0 in over this valve right here
$70k truck dependent on a .05 cent piece of plastic. Oh how manufacturers have destroyed themselves.
everything made nowadays relies on penny sensors and resistors as well.

Good ideas, but I am unable to tell you what the exact makeup of the worm gear is, unfortunately.
What year and mileage of the broken down coolant control valve ?
It was from a 21, they fail at all mileage points, there's no set mileage.
Not sure about demons, but mine is a 2023 20,000 mile trailboss diesel.

I believe it's just a plastics safe white lithium. Thanks for the kind words !
Go figure out of all the vehicles with active thermal management the one thats the hardest to replace is the one that fails the most often
Is that shitty actuator eliminated on the LZ0's control valve?
No

Well if mine fails on my lm2 swap I just did in my wagoneer im locking it open and putting a remote thermostat in it, this is way too weak of a design
why do we pay so much for new vehicles? So it covers the warranty claims. Then its on you.

Or if demonworks would like to work out a deal and you can go through him. I just want to get rid of these things.
I don’t want any part of that and I recommend purchasing from a dealer so that part/labor warranty is covered properly.
