In chemistry, we all memorize that atomic radius increases as you go down a group and decrease as you go across periods. Ever wonder why?

Now i understand protons pull electrons close making the atom smaller in size. The more atoms the more smaller the smaller the atom is. Periods and little amount of protons make them bigger. Thank you

But why does nuclear charge matter? In atoms, the number of electrons always = number of protons, so really this attraction should "cancel out", right? In ions, there may be fewer electrons than protons, in which case yes, the positive charge will be greater than the negative charge, giving an overall attraction towards the nucleus. But what about atoms then?

But why down the group atomic radius increases? it should deacrease cuz as we move down the group the atomic size increases there will be more electrons so, more effective nuclear charge... So why does it decrease?
