You should totally make a couple of these videos about the Late Roman Limitanei, Comitatenses, and Palatina units, after you get done with the Camillan units of the Roman army of course.
Its good to reference that the Latin Romans adopted the big shield from more flexible armies which they have had contact with.. skirmishes with the samnites, gauls also used a variety of shields from long oval or long trapezoidal shields. Roman manipular shields originally were not as convex as legionary shields from the late republic/imperial era.. and the helmets they adopted from the gauls. The samnites also used a feathered helmet, with cheekguards from greek origin called attic helmet Which might also been inspirational. The samnites also intruduced to the northern latin neighbours the linentorax which they got from the greeks. The Gladius came later from an adaptation from the swords of celtic and Lusitanic tribes. hence the name Gladius Hispanienses. Up until then circa 200BC the princeps units of the Republic used the Greek Xyphos sword. Armies from these times were not uniform or Professional, so after a battle roman soldiers plundered the battlefield and took armour and helmet as loot. Alot of it was detrimental material for use, but good to sell or scrap, but some equipament was useful to the soldiers fighting in the now manipular fashion..
Its nice to see a quality video. The only thing I have trouble with is the lack of diagrams explaining some of the details, such as at the 2:00 mark, to better depict what you are talking about. Its a bit hard to visualize a complex formation with only words to go on.
Hey! So at thermopylae the Greeks were still in their tank phase of armour. Covered in bronze, Bell currias, corinthians helmets, greaves possibly Pauldrons but we aren't 100% sure about that, hoplon/aspis shields and dory/xiphos swords. I don't believe at that time the Spartans were using the shorter variety of xiphos I think that came about later.
