How to Knit: Basic Cables - For Beginners | C6F (Left/Front Cross) & C6B (Right/Back Cross) Cables

- This simple cabling tutorial walks you through how to knit two popular basic cables - one left leaning and one right leaning.
The difference between the methods is very easy; it all depends on whether you have the cable needle at the front or at the back...that's it!
In knitting patterns, these cables would likely be written as C6F (cable 6 front) and C6B (cable 6 back)…. or, less commonly, 3/3 LC and 3/3 RC.
I hope you find this useful :)

This is Excellent !The only tutorial that made sense .. because you completed the whole pattern from start to finish . Thank you !
You're very welcome!
Thank you, thank you! Yours is the only video that goes slowly and specifically enough for me to learn this technique. I'm sure most of us already know how to knit and purl. But when it came to what to do with the slipped stitches - who to knit them back in - I was lost. Thanks again for explaining it so well!
Aw thanks for your comment; I'm glad the video was useful!
Thank you so much. This helped me more than any other I have watched 😊
Yay! Glad it helped :)
Going through many videos to learn this by far is the best!
Aw thanks very much! :D
Omg. I've watched soo many vids on cable knitting and yours was by far the most helpful! Thanks for the detailed, step-by-step instructions. I actually feel better now because I thought I'd never figure out cabling! Loll Thank you!!

Thank you for showing both RS and WR.
This vid helpedd me a lottt because other tutorials about cables always starts when they've already knitted halfway not really showing how to start. Liked and subscribed!!!
Thanks very much! :D
Incredibly helpful, my first time doing a cable!!

Hi there just to let you know , I have tried to follow other knitters and found it really hard to follow but you have made it very easy! Thanks a mill ! Ken in lockdown !! DUBLIN .
Yup. That wasn't so hard!!! Lori refuses to lock down in Minnesota. :)
Aw, I'm glad it was helpful! :D
Thank you! Very clear explanation!
Glad it was helpful!
One comment I have is to mention tension as you are knitting the actual cables themselves, as they can get tight as they are being twisted, easing out more yarn as you go helps to keep them flatter. A much better look.
Beautiful 🤩very easy to learnt from you 👍
Excellent :) Thanks!
that video was the best of all!!!! thank you
Aw thanks so much!
Thank you for great directions!
You're welcome!

Awesome, just need to get a cable needle!
Good luck!
Excellent!😀
Thanks :D
Thanks for sharing your Knowledge. For this pattern, should the Cable needle always be in the front, in the Cable row?
Kindly Reply. Thank you.
The cable needle will be at the front when you are doing a 'left cross' and at the back when doing a 'right cross' ...so it depends which direction you want the cable to twist :)
@@RokoleeDIY ok.Thank you .
Very good!
Thanks!
I want to ask if I want a bigger cable like c8b and c8f should I just add 2 more stitches on the cable side?or are there more to do?
C6F & C6B cables use 6 stitches, so if you would like C8F & C8B cables, you'll need 8 stitches to work with. So yes basically :) Then just cross 4 stitches over the other 4 stitches.
@@RokoleeDIY thankss
Good. I got it. Ta.
Yay!
I've been using a pattern similar to this and I get large gaps in my work...help?
your tension is too loose. Usually, there is a gap after the cable. pinch and lift the next 2 stitches after you cable. this will close the gap. if you are worried about there being a gap throughout, pinch and lift each stitch to see where the excess yarn is gathered. if you tighten your tension at that spot in the future, you won't see the infamous gap again.
As EJanell has replied (thanks :)) the tension is most likely the issue. I'm assuming the gap is down one (or both) sides of the cable? Take a look at the end of my 'introduction to cabling' video and I talk about this :) Try and make the tension tighter as you switch between knits and purls or vice versa.
how to do it if I take 30 stitches? Can you please guide me.
Hi! Not sure what you mean...each cable in this video is 6 stitches wide, so you could fit 5 of those across 30 stitches if you pack them in, or you could have 1 cable in the centre and have any stitch pattern surrounding it. OR you could do something like cross 10 stitches over 10 stitches in the centre, to make a 20 stitch cable, and then add 5 stitches on each side for the border. Lots of options!
Sorry still cant grasp it ,have a pattren i looked at 20 times still cant ,never good at math's I'm wondering is this my down fall ,you done nothing wrong you are good at explaining .Frustrated .😢😢😢
Next video make it faster motion ok?
