    Learn how to knit the basic cable : )
    Cables are created when a certain number of stitches are held in front of/behind a piece of work and the same number of stitches are knit off the left handed needle first. This creates a "twist" in the work and the result is a cable pattern.
    This video tutorial shows how to create the basic six-stitch cable. The pattern I am showing in this video is a repetition of 4 rows as outlined below:
    ROW 1 (wrong side of work): K4, P6, K4
    ROW 2 (right side of work): P4, K6, P4
    ROW 3 (wrong side of work): K4, P6, K4
    ROW 4 (right side of work): P4, C6B, P4
    Abbreviation:
    C6B = cable 6 back
    Slip first 3 stitches on to cable needle (or double pointed needle) and hold int he back of work. Knit next 3 stitches on the left hand needle. Then knit 3 stitches that were held on the cable needle (or DPN).

    I’ve been avoiding these for ages because I’d thought that each row will have something complicated to do, I had no idea it was just swapping 3 stitches every 4 rows. This was a super-clear tutorial, thank you!

    Nice explanation. short sweet and to the point. I'm an experienced knitter who has done cable before but the last time was awhile back and I just needed a little refresher on how to work the reverse side. Just want to write this out for my own sake. Not criticizing this video, it has definitely helped me, and I'm hoping this post maybe helps somebody with a mind which thinks procedurally similar to mine. If not, it has still helped me, so...
    Reasons I watched this video a bunch and wanted to write this out: I understood the basic concept of cabling but couldn't figure out where my yarn was supposed to be when slipping stitches and when switching from knitting/purling the cable stitches in the wrong order to knitting/purling the cable stitches on the cable needle. As in - I have enough knowledge to understand that a yarn-over is implied any time we're switching from knitting to purling, but couldn't visualize where the yarn needs to be with pretty much anything involving the stitches slipped onto the cable needle. I've tried a few different sort of "cabling for beginners" written and photo instructions, but the instructions I've found seem to entirely leave out steps like "wyif/wyib" in relation to all three needles. I'm also still trying to figure out how the tension both between stitches and between/around the cables works.
    Yarn (over) behind the right needle and cable needle but in front of the left needle before slipping stitches purl-wise (1:12), also it seems like we're stretching the area between the needles here before slipping the stitches in order to create some slack (1:15) ; yarn over from the RIGHT side of the cable needle/stitches to between the cable needle and right needle before purling stitches out of order (so yarn is in front of cable needle but behind both left and right needles) (1:40) , also seems like we're maintaining slack between the beginning of the row and the slipped stitches but not as much slack between the beginning of the row and the out-of-order stitches (I imagine this is because the space created by the slipped stitches is what creates the necessary slack) ; leave yarn between left and right needles and in front of the cable needle when knitting the cable stitches (1:55), maybe stretching the area between the cables and the end of the row just a little; yarn over to front like normal for the rest of the row (2:50) .

    This was lovely! Im just confused with the C6B and what it means...it seems like it would be C3B, k3...but I'm am totally new at this and don't understand...I was just hoping to learn patterns at the same time as learning the stitches

    • @purllinknitting
      @purllinknitting  6 років тому

      C6B is just the abbreviation for creating a cable that consists of 6 total stitches. So yes you will be slipping 3 stitches off purlwise to the back of your work, knitting the next 3 stitches off the left hand needle, then knit the 3 stitches that were held to the back. I hope this explanation helps answer your question!

    Wondering what your knitting style is? Is it left-handed English/ American? Very interesting to observe :)

    Hey, I love this pattern but I'm wondering if it still works if I do everything with 8 instead? I want it wider.
    Thanks :)

      Yup! You can certainly follow the same rule of thumb and do it by 8 instead if you want a wider cable : ) Enjoy!

    Wait. I saw rows 1-4 but what about rows 5+? Sorry I’m new lol. Do I repeat 1-4?

    I want to cast 44 stitches. How do you cable. Let me know.

    Hi!
    When you begin knitting off the cable needle, are you knitting in reverse? I feel like instead of looping from the right, you're looping from the left?!
    Great video btw!

    Can you use different size of knitting needle to put the cable stitch on

    • @purllinknitting
      @purllinknitting  5 років тому

      You sure can! If you use a thinner needle, stitches will slip off more easily.

    When cabling, do you always knit the stitches that you are cabling or would there be times that you purl them instead?

    • @purllinknitting
      @purllinknitting  5 років тому +1

      Yup you will almost always knit the stitches that you are cabling. This is because of the way the knit stitch looks vs the purl stitch. If you purl the cabled stitches it will not create a prominent cable shape. It may help by looking at the shape of knit stitches (they look like a bunch of "V"s stacked) as opposed to purl stitches which end up looking like "- - -" dashes stacked. I hope this makes sense! It's a bit challenging to explain via text!

    If I wanted to make it longer with more casting..how would I do that? Repeat what's on the rows?

    • @purllinknitting
      @purllinknitting  8 років тому

      If you wanted to make the row longer, just part of the pattern in the row. The pattern will depend on how many stitches you want between each cable. For example, if you wanted to have 3 cables per row with 1 stitch separating each cable, you would follow the pattern below:
      Cast on 28 stitches
      ROW 1 (wrong side of work): K4, P6, K1, P6, K1, P6, K4
      ROW 2 (right side of work): P4, K6, P1, K6, P1, K6, P4
      ROW 3 (wrong side of work): K4, P6, K1, P6, K1, P6, K4
      ROW 4 (right side of work): P4, C6B, P1, C6B, P1, C6B, P4
      Hope this helps and makes sense!

    Hi I'm from Puerto Rico and I will like to learn how to knit I don't know how to read a pattern of a cable knit sweater that I bought online can you please tell me we're I can find a video that will help me step by step to make this sweater

    • @purllinknitting
      @purllinknitting  7 років тому

      I think most videos will not show step by step for a sweater since it has so many steps! Your best bet would be to find a pattern online and then look up how to do each stitch in the pattern :) good luck! I have yet to knit a sweater!
