Wife and I are visiting in July. We land in Porto, stay for 4 day then off to Lisbon for 4 days then to Albufeira for 4 more days then back to Lisbon for one night and home to Washington DC. It really is a vacation but since we're going to be retiring in about 3 years we're also looking at it to see if we could live in Portugal. If we decide yes, then there are going to be many more trip for longer stays in different areas to get a feel for the area. Madeira comes to mind also. Thanks for your videos. They're very helpful.

It's funny how this applies to so many different nationalities aswell, whether it be German or Spanish, French or Portuguese, how to ask the time, how to find a train station and how to order at a café 😂
As a server in an English tearooms I love videos like this, trying out my German or Portuguese on foreign customers, it always gets a warm reaction ❤

I am a Portuguese living in China and watching your videos has been so therapeutic for me.
I am loving my experience in China and I love the Chinese people, culture and language (I have wanted to come here for years!), but I do want to return to Portugal once my work contract ends.
Watching foreigners loving Portugal and appreciating my country, culture, and language makes me feel so happy and grateful for being Portuguese. And the thought that one day I will return to my country makes me even more grateful to be having this expat experience myself, here and now in China. All the experiences you go through in Portugal, I am going through the same but in China.
We are all humans, we are all citizens of the world :)
Beijos e felicidades para todos, de uma portuguesa na China! :)

We spent a few years in Portugal, and Liz’s videos and course(s) were, for me, the very best of the many ways we came across to learn the language. They really are perfect for English speakers, whichever anglophone country you are from. I’ve noticed lately that there are a lot of ads on UA-cam which (oddly) try to belittle the idea of “watching UA-cam videos” to learn to speak Portuguese. But don’t be fooled - Liz’s vids and even more, her courses, are both fun and quite serious (not contradictory qualities), better than any other method I tried, which was quite a few. I have no financial or other interest here, just trying to pay our experience forward. Cheers!

My wife is half Madeiran and slowly learning Portuguese with your help. One of your suggestions was to listen to Portuguese music and she found it really helps, plus she now has a few favorites (Ana Moura & Carolina Deslandes). We love Portugal and have been to Madeira, Porto, Lisbon, Obidos, Nazare, Fatima, and Sintra. Been having saudades again, so making plans for Douro Valley and the Algarve.

I'm Portuguese living in the US and knew some of the language growing up because both of my parents were born in the Azores. They immigrated here in the 60's with my grandparents but needed to learn english when they came so Potuguese wasnt always spoken all the time so i never properly learned it. They have been such a huge help. My husband and I are hoping to plan a long trip in 2025 to Libon and then back to Sāo Miguel and i hope to be able to speak more fluently by then. I’m a Brit living in the USA. During the 90s I was fortunate enough to make an impressionable number of visits to Portugal. The country became my most favoured country in Europe. ( Not withstanding England).
Now about language. I was able to navigate fairly well. However, the hardest part of any encounter with a local individual was their instant attempt to practice their mastering of the English language. Especially the younger generation as it was being taught in school. The people I did business with insisted that I provide a correction to any English grammar/ spelling in their communications to other English speakers. ( I loved them for it ).
I’m now in my early 80’s and potential for another visit seems remote. SAD.

I liked your comment very much. Im portuguese and it reminded me when, in late 90's, at a algarve beach motel i had this big conversation with a brit from sunderland, my first contact with a foreigner. At that time cable or sattelite TV was rare, so learning english was not that easy. That man never corrected me but i bet he could have done it many times. I will never forget it.
Btw please ignore the age, if you can still move, MOVE. Best regards Mr John.

But you still have that experience under your belt. More than most people! As they say here in Spain, "que te quiten lo bailado". They can't erase those dances that you did indeed dance!!

We will be visiting a variety of cities/towns from Lisbon to Porto in October 2024. Then we’ll spend 4 days in Cascais, before returning to the US. Very excited!

Thank you Liz for the slow break down of pronunciations. We're moving to Portugal and I feel that learning the language is very overwhelming and stressful for me. So thank you for your videos.

I am from Mexico. One thing I like about Portugal is the many greetings. Bom dia, boa tarde etc. Much like here. Whereas in Soain "ola" and "vale" right and left.

Hi! I will be visiting Portugal next month and trying to learn the basics! I'm from Peru and talk Spanish/English but I like to make the effort (if possible) to communicate in the language of the place I'm visiting. I'm glad I discovered your channel because the content is very didactic and I already learned new words and pronunciations. For sure will be watching more videos :)

I'm planning to visit Lisbon + Sintra and Cascais, then Tomar, Coimbra, Porto, & Braga with side trips to Guimaraes & Viana do Castelo. Have gathered loads of information on history & architecture etc. - I'm a little obsessive that way -- then realized I should know how to say a few things.

Me hubiera gustado ver este vídeo antes de haber ido a Portugal 😸. I learned Brazilian Portuguese and I thought that it was necessary for survive in Portugal and NOT. People was so nice and talked me in spanish or in english 🙈.

Isso é no minimo ridiculo, o português de ambos os paises não tem grandes diferenças, talvez você tenha encontrado alguém que não gosta de brasileiros

Ahhh, the similarities with other languages makes understanding easier but it also makes getting the subtle pronunciation differences harder. I’m a Canadian English speaker that tries to learn a few polite phrases when traveling. I am certain I will be mashing together spanish, Italian, French, and English on my trip to Portugal 😂 but I shall try 😊.

Hi Liz. I've been enjoying learning what I can from your videos. My wife, Amy, & I are visiting Portugal for the first time this summer, for almost a full month in June and July. Algarve the first week, Lisbon area the 2nd, Porto/Braga the 3rd, then mosey down thru the Silver Coast back to Faro to fly out mid-July. We are considering moving there next year or so, but even if not, we're thrilled to be able to explore your country for the first time. Obrigado.
