Amazing beautiful versions of Shumba. it appears as though one could play this on Nyamaropa tuning with a player on Mavembe tuning playing the more well known version for a nice cross tuned duet. Thank you Forward and Andy.
Hi Randall - I just went back to look though the notation we have for this one at www.mbira.online and it looks fairly close to the typical Shumba structure, so maybe no mavembe needed, just a couple of note changes.
Thanks Andy. I've been on a cross tuning bent these days and enjoying playing parts for multiple mbira players in different tunings. This is an excellent example of a Nyamaropa Shumba part that could be played with a Mavembe or Nemakonde part together. Thank you Forward for your musical genius.
@@randallgraves9298 Thanks for pushing - I went back into my notation and transposed the more typical Shumba to show its notes 'as if' it was played in Mavembe (up two notes or 'a third' - depending on your preferred language). I noticed that there's very few notes that could be considered as 'fifths' in that basic pattern (all the others could be thought of as roots and thirds, and when these are transposed they become thirds and fifths), so it fits well. For this reason, I'd sooner think of this cross-tuning possibility as a result of the structure of the original, rather than what Forward is playing. I'm wondering if you think of it differently?
I do see it differently and seeing the basic part progression in roots and fiths! I'm very interested in your perception of it. I think I would very much enjoy needing out with you . I recently took a transposed set of the Shumba progression to create a version of Dzinomwa Muna Save.
Hey Arty! How are you? Yes - this is one of Gift's. I've got a load in the same tuning on order from him (same layout - extra low note 2 and high note 3) if you're interested. Or you can contact him direct - details inside the Trusted Mbira Makers pack here: mbiramagic.gumroad.com/l/mbira-essentials
