Corner Brook has been non-commissioned for years, so I hope all the upgrades are effective. I know Canada bought these 4 obsolete electric diesel Victoria class subs from Great Britain in 1998, and the HMCS Victoria was the only commissioned one at that time. I heard one of these caught on fire (not sure which one)and a crewman was killed. I know it's a bad thing to say, but for the cost of the upgrades done to these subs it would have been a better route to bought modern ones from the US, France or Germany. I don't know why the Canadian government doesn't invest more into their navy considering we have one of the largest water ways in the world.

The submarine you are speaking about is HMCS Chicoutimi, and you are correct, sadly Lieutenant (Navy) Chris Saunders died on that initial sail in 2004.
The sub was repaired and has since gone on to conduct one of the longest deployments of the Victoria class submarines to date (in the Asia Pacific region).
Canada has recently established a submarine project office to look at the future of subs in Canada. They have to start that now as the procurement process is so long, but at least it's happening.

      Rest sailor.

That's awesome. It will be on the next Canadian Star Trek series. Captain Trudorf and his trusty Vulcan sidekick Crosseyed Freeloader. When the producer explained to Trudeau the damned thing was for going under the water not outer space, he was really upset and needed a rest. So he jetted to Latvia, UK, Middle East. Africa, South America, Australia, and south Korea. Then I heard he was looking for good WW1 and 2 good used equipment for our military so he could play war.
Sorry folks was just sitting here bored.

Having the Victoria class of submarine operate until 2032 seems to be having too high expectations of them. Canada should be planning to replace them sooner than that.

The Royal Canadian Navy has recently opened a program office to look into follow-on submarines after the Victoria class. It will take years, so gotta start now.

Did the ruptured ballast tank caused by an abnormal procedure used to empty the ballast after a successful test was completed get properly fixed? The question really is did the ballast tank get replaced with a new tank so as to ensure that there would be no limitations placed on the subs ability to dive to 200 meters?

@@abrahamdozer6273 yes this had orginally started that the RCN gave up the last 6 batch3 Halifax frigates for up to 12 SSN. That was never going to happen, as the USN and RN didnt want canada to have SSN as it would impede their SSN operations. Once the federal govt caved to the American govts no the RN threw the Cupholders at Canada, as a peace offering. We should have kept the batch3 frigates and when the 4 O boats left, so did the sub service, or force the RN or USN to provide something better the RN didnt want the Cupholders, so the pawned them off on Canada so the British govt couldn't force the RN to give up nuke boats in favor of the Cupholders. WIN WIN for the RN.

@@jonathantarrant2449 The SSNs that we were going to buy were Trafalgar Class. What we got (in exchange for leases at CFB Suffield) were the only four conventional diesel/electric versions of the Trafalgar Class that the Brits made before they decided to go strictly "nuclear". A 12 boat nuclear submarine fleet is not sustainable in Canada. Part (or maybe most) of the original rationale back in the 80s for those nuclear boats was to patrol the Canadian Arctic with them. Whoever thought that one up never looked at charts of the waters of our really complex Arctic Archipelago. They would have been a nightmare to navigate under the ice in those narrow and sometime shallow places. There is zero chance of submarines traversing them surfaced with even a skin of ice on them (Surfacing under the polar ice is NOT moving forward, surfaced in polar ice.)
What eventually happened makes more sense by building dedicated Arctic specialist vessels. As the ice cover retreats in the Arctic, they have more and more freedom to patrol, too. Subs? ... expensive, dangerous and not up to the mission.
ps. our allies are delighted that we have diesel-electric boats to practice against. They are MUCH harder to detect, find than nuclear subs, who always have that pressurized water kettle boiling away all of the time..Electric boats just have to "switch off" everything and they totally disappear. As most of the US Navy's adversaries have diesel/ electric subs, practising against noisy nukes will not teach them the skills that they will need in real combat.
pps Where in der heck did "cupholder" come from? ... a right wing mag from the Prairies?

@@abrahamdozer6273 cupholders, are a playoff upholders class. These submarines are a chance for officers to advance putting in time peirside, making them admiral cupholders as I hold my coffee. The last l heard was, that the 12 submarine were actually going to be French SSN as the Brits and americans didnt want Canada at the nuke party. We should have kept the batch 3 stretched halifax. The last 4 of them could have been AAW destroyers and been a true replacement for the Iroquois DDH to get the fleet numbers down under 20. The 4 submarines are an expensive play toy. Only 1 has been operational at anyone time, the other 3 have been peirside or docked. The O boats were lucky if 2 were operational at any one time and we had a 4th O boat tied to the dock at all times for a trainer, so it didnt take away from the other 3.
