      Agreed. The filling in of backstory is a trope I kinda enjoy. It's why I'm not really upset with the Train Job being the first aired episode. I sensed a history there and wanted to know more. Everything else... the action and adventure... gave me reason to want to know more. I was pulled in.

    “Shouldn’t River of sensed him?”
    Could that be why she tried to get a gun?
    When Mal surprise stumbled upon Early we see that Early is a very capable combatant (River also implies that even bad-ass Zoë couldn’t take him). He seemingly could of just fought through the crew to his objective. Instead though, he “reads” each of them and figures the most efficient way to deal with each one of them: He simply locks the fighters (Zoë, Jayne, Mal) up in their rooms; He petrified Kaylee with fear by the idea behind a single vile and graphic threat; he stops Inara from talking so she can’t use her Psychology on him; and he gets the Doctors cooperation by both holding out hope and threatening Kaylee. So what do you think it means that he determined that the most efficient way to deal with Book was an overwhelming surprise blitz knockdown?

    So, the episode starts with voices as we zoom through the grate to see River. One of the voices is Early's.
    River wanders through the ship and winds up with a gun. Why? To prepare for the threat she only half perceives?
    Mal says, No touching guns.
    River proceeds to deal with Early without using guns and in fact echoing the "no guns" to Mal later.
    It's all there and I never noticed it until someone else pointed it out. Wow!

      she didn't try to get the gun. that's wishful/biased thinking. remember, you're seeing HER perspective. The show makes that very clear. she stumbled into the gun and had no clue what it was, what it was be used for, or why she would even want it. "does it have a purpose?" You can't ignore the fact that you're seeing her perspective 100% in the beginning. She has telepathy but doesn't know everything. "I understand but don't comprehend." She's hearing thoughts but doesn't comprehend the intricacies of them. She sees objects but doesn't comprehend their complex applications. When she "zones" out her ability to take in information increases but her ability to process that information beyond an instinctual/primal level decreases. What does a gun look like to an animal? a shiny stick. When she's more a normal domestic/mundane girl, she's communicating with only words, not thoughts (her telepathy is reduced and not hyper-active), but comprehends better (which is why she interacts better when relaxed as a girl with kayley and is better relatable).
      When she woke, she heard the thoughts of another unknown party (jubayl) through telepathic proximity but could not comprehend them. They confused her, which is why she woke confused and disoriented and wandering aimlessly with her mind amplified (like in seek mode), probably searching for the source of the mysterious thoughts she detected.
      perhaps she did not use guns because mal told her no guns, or perhaps just because she likes games and wanted to use her mind to win. also possibly because jubayl's stronger/faster/better with guns, it would be foolish to try to beat him in a gun fight.

      @@unclebounce1495 It is kinda odd how people can completely ignore how the subconscious works. She didn't cut Jayne's shirt or rip the labels off the cans knowingly and equally unknowingly she tries to get a gun... or a neat stick to hit the threat with.

    • @unclebounce1495
      @unclebounce1495 Рік тому

      @@michaelklaus Yes, she did. That's exactly how it happened. You're assuming she is in the same mental state on those compared occasions. She's clearly not. again, the director makes her perspective very clear. It's not subtle. it's not abstract. She is in a state of delusion, like when she has her fits earlier on and doesn't realize where she's at or who anyone is. That is NOT the case with the knife. She showed no sign of confusion. The cans she was not confused either, per se, just hysterical (with the confusion intrinsic in that state). But it's not like she didn't see cans. She saw the cans and intentionally unwrapped them. She saw the boxes/bags and opened/unwrapped them. She treated each object as it actually was, not like a hallucination. The gun situation is clearly hallucinatory delusions. You're similarly deluded if you can't see that.

      It's a great episode, but I have an issue with it. Specifically, when the robber captain decided to shoot Mal, why shoot him in the gut? Why not the head or the heart? Kinda hard to miss at that range. And why only shoot him once? If you've decided to kill the guy and steal his ship, you do that. Not entirely sure why they didn't just open fire when Mal first opened the door, unless the other captain hadn't made the call/steeled himself to the deed yet, but shooting Mal didn't seem to cause him any particular distress, so... I dunno?
      It's a minor point, but it sticks. Whedon's usually pretty good at making actions follow motivations, and it's hard to see that here.

    • @ALeafOnTheWind42
      @ALeafOnTheWind42 2 роки тому +1

      @@michaelccozens As far as shooting him once goes, he was probably trying to save bullets. Seems like the kind of guy that would care about that.
      Only thing I can really think of for not shooting him in the head is that maybe that way he could, by leaving Mal to die, justify to himself that he didn't actually kill him. He'd have been left to bleed out and die/suffocate, and that wouldn't really be his doing (in his twisted way of thinking about it), so it absolves him of some guilt.
      It's admittedly weak, but it's all I can come up with

    • @michaelccozens
      @michaelccozens 2 роки тому

      @@ALeafOnTheWind42 Thanks! I appreciate the attempt, but it still doesn't sit right with me, just because Joss doesn't usually miss this stuff. Also, if the shooter was morally-conflicted, why not throw Mal in a suit and leave him adrift? Marooning, either on a little island or in a tiny lifeboat, has a long history.
      I still don't know why he didn't just shoot Mal when the door opened. Mal could have been covertly armed then; the shooter'd at least have the moral cover of that, if moral cover was amongst his concerns. Leaving Mal to suffocate could mean leaving Serenity locked-up and impossible to get into, but once they were in, they didn't seem to need anything else from Serenity's captain. If they wanted to save bullets, they could have airlocked him, which would also have been less of a security concern than wounding a smuggler and letting him crawl around his own vessel. Even just restraining Mal would have been a smarter call. It's all very strange.

    Did you notice that the ball at the end was the same as the planet at the beginning? God and River do not play dice with the universe. They play jacks.
    If you're listening on mono speakers you may not have caught this: On the bridge, when River laughs at Early, the laughter moves around him, just beyond his grasp. It's a good use of holographic sound to make a point.
    On the DVD commentary tracks, Whedon reveals that like Bushwhacked, this episode is about River's feet. Being a dancer, River interacts with her environment through her feet. Her bare feet being the most intimate form of contact, whenever she's "reading," she's always barefoot.

    I love Jubal Early. His threatening to rape Kaylee aside (a scene which is meant to make the viewer extremely uncomfortable), the writing of the character is so interesting and unique that you really need to watch it a couple of times to really get it. Like when Simon asks if he's a bounty hunter while he's in the middle of coming up with a word. He's too distracted by his own tangent that he says (to himself) "that ain't it" while it seems like he's responding to Simon. Then when Simon asks what he is, that question registers and he responds "I'm a bounty hunter.". Honestly such a brilliant character. Joss said at a later point that he survived the episode, so it wouldn't have been the last we saw of him.
    My favorite episode in the series is Out of Gas. Between learning the history of the entire crew, and how brilliantly structured it was telling a story in 3 times... Just brilliant.

    Couple of mentions here, the idea of psychic children stolen from their families and raised by a shadow government to be assassins is pretty old, but my first introduction to the concept was in Blizzard Entertainment's PC video game, 1996 Starcraft. One of the main characters, Sarah Kerrigan is one such psychic assassin, termed Ghosts.
    Second, Age t Hurley's brooding theme music is reminiscent of a much older PC video game, Space Quest. Where in the player commands a generic character, destined to save the universe through no special feats. DVDs of TV shows were a fairly new phenomena and it was surprising that Fox released a DVD set of a failed show but they did. It was probably because they could market it as having 3 episodes + the pilot which had never aired. And it sold like hotcakes. The DVD set was a Top 20 DVD seller on Amazon for over 2 years. People bought them and then bought again to give to their friends and family to say, "You have to watch this show." Several effort were made to revive the show but to no avail. Fox was not interested in licensing the property and there just wasn't the variety of streaming platforms like there are today. Today the show would likely have found a home on a streaming platform.

The reason the special effects looks good in this show is because it was mastered in HD from the start which wasn't very common at the time. The scattered interactive display screens in the show was basically a new thing in post production which is technically a special effect since large capacitive screens weren't a thing back then.

    "War Stories" is my favorite, because of the dynamic between Wash and Mal when they were being tortured; it was both funny watching them argue, but it also showed how Mal cared and looked out for Wash by distracting him from the pain by talking nonsense.

    Note: Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel were still on the air when this was cancelled. Some Firefly actors got parts on those shows.
    There is an episode of Angel with the actress who played River as a cursed Russian ballerina Angel had to save. (This was just before she played River).
    The guy who played Mal was a reoccurring villain in the last season of BTVS.
    The guy who played Jane was a reoccurring villain in the last season of Angel.

    "War Stories" is my favorite episode. The best thing about Firefly is that there are no bad episodes. They're all either Good or better.
    FOX sabotaged this series from the get-go. Airing them out of order from the start, not even airing 3 episodes at all during the original run. They didn't give it a real chance. I think the only reason they let it be made at all is to amuse Joss Whedon after the success of Buffy & Angel. They were moving away from SciFi at the time and wasn't really interested in Firefly. So they sabotaged it to make Joss move on to Doll House (which I think is the least interesting Joss Whedon series).

      Considering that Dollhouse got a second season because NO ONE was going to kill a Whedon show in season one after the fan backlash to Firefly's cancellation... The executives at Fox went through a number of changes between begging Joss to do a third show and supporters were no longer on board. No matter what the executives did before or after the season, the legacy of being the ones to cancel the show is the primary fact in their history and introductions like a dead albatross or the Mark of Caine.

    Jubal Early was based in part on a Confederate general of the same name, whom Nathan Fillion can trace his ancestry back to. He - the general - was apparently somewhat deaf in one hear, which explains why he - in the episode - mishears "Alliance" as "a lion" and apparently mishears "bounty hunter" aa well.
    Also, when River is hearing voices in her head while in her bunk, the voice that says "we're all just floating" is Jubal Early's voice. It wasn't a voice River recognized...
    Jubal Early has been tracking Serenity and her crew for a while, he's had time to research everyone, plus he is pretty perceptive.

    There are many fantastic episodes, but I'm definitely in the "Out of Gas" camp for my favorite. It's not just the wonderful little back-stories, but the way it all fits together and flows between timelines, the cinematography (different color palates for the different timelines...), everything. It's a gem of an episode. Mal is my favorite character; he sets the tone for the whole ship, and I love his loyalty to his crew. YoSafBrig is probably my favorite side character, although Niska and Early are pretty compelling too in their own way.

    If you want another short and sweet series (13 episodes) get your hands on "Wonderfalls" from Tim Minear, who did "Out of Gas" and several other episodes of Firefly. There's a great guest star in the last few episodes too. Fear not, Tim had learned how quickly FOX could screw up a series and designed to show to have a stopping point at 13 episodes. Of course, FOX only ever aired the first 4.

    The usual prescription for "Firefly" withdrawal after the movie, "Serenity" is "Cowboy Bebop." Jazz sessions with Spike Spiegel and Jet Black are very good, and you can ponder the similarities between the 'verse of "Firefly" and "Cowboy Bebop." ("Netflix"? See the Anime, first.) I remember actor Richard Brooks from the early years of "Law & Order" as ADA Paul Robinette. He left for private practice and became as devilish as bounty hunter "Jubal Early.";)

    I've been enjoying your reviews of "Firefly" and looking forward to your takes on "Serenity". My only suggestion is that at some point you'll do a similar treatment of the show that might've inspired this one: "Cowboy Bebop" A late 90s anime with a similar short run time and "To Infinity and Beyond" cult status . Similar concept but a very different kind of story. 26 approximately half hour episodes and a movie that fits between episodes 13 and 14 ( as I recall ). The movie's optional. It's basically an extended episode. Just a thought.
